Living land NZ
New Zealand
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 ต.ค. 2012
I'm going off grid !
I've cleared an area of land and I'm building a barn and cabin to live a completely self sufficient lifestyle.
I am filming the entire process from the start. I will also be establishing vegetable gardens, raising chickens and continuing to provide all of my own meat by hunting and spearfishing.
The modern world and its comforts are what make me feel uncomfortable.

I just found your channel and so subscribed I am an old kiwi living in the US and have been subscribed to a couple who are off grid in Canada They do deer pigs and butcher chickens plus sell the eggs Maybe chickens might be a thought to add to the grid you have Did you have to buy the land you are on Would be interesting to know I miss the bush life but that was more a holiday and about 40 years ago lol Too old for that life now but will check out all your videos Keep up the great work and hope it works well for you
Thanks I appreciate it, yeah I own the land. I have thought of chickens and/or raising a couple of pigs each year. Still deciding.

Awesome bro what part of the country you in?

What kinda price range does that solar setup run you 😊
I gave the full price for setup in the video
looks like a young wiltshire
Love your video awesome explained man I can't wait to make me some have got other flavors for beef please
I have a bach that has had vermin inside. I believe that you should Tek screw each corrogation of the iron at the guttering edge (bottom purlin), to prevent this. Otherwise there is a newish product on Trade Me that is nailed outside each corrogation, it is a small angled flashing. Fiddly yes, time consuming yes, but way cheaper than replacing all bedding that is soiled by the critters. Regards Lindsay Eltham NZ
Your an inspiration mate. I found your episodes while researching for my own pole shed which I have just received council consent for. My one will be a Harrier shed from a manufacturer in Christchurch and is 9m x 6m (56 Sqm) to be a 2 bay workshop and 1 bay art studio. I found your explanations great and finally understand how a 'girt' should be positioned to take out the decreasing angle of the poles and ensure a 90 degree flat surface for the cladding!! I'm sure I would have buggered that up if I hadn't seen your episodes and could potentially end up looking like a more like a bloody pyramid! Anyway great stuff mate. Enjoyed the tranquil scenes, the Cicada's and the bird life. You've built a fantastic shed that you can rightly be very proud of. You're a true 'sheddy' (and a left handed one now too!). Cheers Terry
Really appreciate it mate, and all the best with your shed build. It really is a good fun...as long as you dont hurt yourself in the process 😆
New follower. Mean mahi bro. You army?
@@apiranahemi7951 nah mate, wish i had joined from school though
@LivinglandNZ You would have fit right in mate. Keep up the good work. Love the content.
Absolutely stunning.... Love the music too
Mate, I'm not a professional roofer but you butchered that ridge capping. Anyway, good to see you hooking in and having a crack. I hope you aren't doing anything through those leaches at council. They love to have their snouts in the trough but just tell them that you aren't interested in contracting with them.
@@ronjeremy6128 😂 like i said, ugly but it’s weather tight
Hi from Aussie . I feel more and more people are starting to get tired of the matrix and want to unplug and go off grid I think its really cool how you have chosen to invest in living your life and not materialism . Simplicity is freedom. Wishing you all the best ❤
@@janeyoung4844 thanks, yeah i think so as well, people are starting to wake up
Don’t bend em over mate….just cut them flush with barge with a bit of silicon. Looking good👍
Looks good mate
Wow that a beautiful Rimu behind your cabin!
Love your work mate, I’m guessing that you’re born down south and did your trade before you moved north cause everyone north of Christchurch calls a dwang “nogs” 😜 the word nog to me is an Aussie word 😜.big high five from Queenstown, love your videos mate! Keep it up! 👍
haha nah mate North born and bred, and I dont have a trade.
Great stuff mate
Lovely hearing the Tui, our Kaihikatea are full of nector at the mo, so we have plenty of birds around the cabin. Tui, waxeye, and those cheeky Aussie lorikeets. Appreciate you explaining everything as you go along.
Lol ridge ends look fine from my place 200 km away ( sometimes things don't come together like you would like long they work)
Hubby built a compost toilet with basin etc last summer, which went down well with the younger family members who camped in our orchard. We promised them a shower this summer. So thank you so much for this video. We don’t have power in the orchard yet so we will be using a camping gas califont and small water tank. We really want a spa, some days it would be a luxury to soak the aches away. We have been 31/2 years in, off grid living and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Setting up is like eating an Elephant, its do able as long as one does it bite at a time.
So, where do I put the beers?
haha I have a large fridge
@@LivinglandNZ Omw...
Good to see you back.
blood sweat and tears went into it
Awesome vids mate! Love what you're doing!
Looks awesome Keep up the great work 😎
The birdsong is amazing, no 1080 around there I’m guessing 🙏👍
no mate hasn’t been 1080 here for over 30 years
@@LivinglandNZ that’s so good mate, great to see you back mate 👍
Good to see you back!! Thanks for the vids bro. Awesome!!
I want to live this way... im so happy to have come across this account.. thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and world ❤❤.. love from Whangarei!
Fascinating BJ. Never would have thought you would have to think about how to actually use all that power.
Would you mind sharing the measurements for this shed? Looking to build one similar
It's in one of my videos the full cost break down etc, but it is 7m by 6m.
@@LivinglandNZ the wood shed I meant. Looking to build one soon. Curious of the measurements and working out costs of iron and wood.
@@EatSleepDriftTrike Ahh got yah, it was 3x4m. I have stopped lighting the fire now and it's still half full, it wasn't completely full to begin with so easy 2 1/2 years of pine. Hard wood 3 years at least.
@@LivinglandNZ appreciate your reply, how tall is it and I just noticed in video you say it’s 4.5m x 3.5m. Do they sell 4.5m sheets of corrugated iron for the roof?
@@EatSleepDriftTrike 3m high at the front, got to a manufacturer and they will make any length you want
Bloody awsum mate. Love the composting toilet and shower. Thumbs up from me
Good on yah bro cheers!
Mean man take my hat off to you and your hard work and dream I’m doing the same in the Palouris sounds with no roads and she sure is an adventure love your content 😊
You are in one of my favourite parts of the country, I would love to go off grid there, but it's not practical for me at the moment.
What was the cost of the kit set pole shed mate?
@@klearman9612 have a look at pole barn completion, i break down every cost of the process
Hey brother, I'm 19 just turnt 20 I stay in Auckland NZ been making my own projects like crossbows and bow and arrows since I was little but been interested in build a log cabin, if you got any advice would be mean as
Would b built illegally as I don't own land atm but ik th risk 😂
@@TikarauEdwards605 nice work bro. You obviously like being creative and making things, if you aren’t doing so already get a trade, building or something similar, and start collecting hand tools, Not many people know how to use/sharpen chisels and planes, learn old school first.
@@LivinglandNZ yeah bro I understand,I stay in Auckland, manurewa nz, My oldmans old school been teaching me a couple things about engineering n stuff, starting steel fixing as soon as I could get a job, been fixing bikes since I was little too jus don't get that much help with the family nowadays, but always been a hands on typa guy though bro was jus wondering if you got any tips if I were to start doinn a log cabin already got a plan sketched out😂
But seems like Yu already know what to do bro jus wondering if I get some pointers
Super inspiring though bro Keep going🫡
Love it mate, we're doing something similar in Australia in the bush, you are totally right about the mindset, things can get frustrating if you see it as work and focus on the modern commodities you don't have... but if you see it and embrace it as a lifestyle, everything becomes an adventure.
Exactly right, I prefer the basics, life seems easier that way.
Yeah I love that kind of life and when I'm tramping I live the basic amenities
One thing we have learnt living off the grid is a dry shelter with a covered entrance for wet coats, boots etc is so important Especially this horrific weather blowing up the islands at the moment. We haven’t lit a fire in weeks and how it’s friggin cold. Just about had the car blown off the road today with those big gusts. Welcome spring here in New Zealand. I get great pleasure watching someone else constructing a cabin. It’s very informative watching a cabin built Kiwi style. I make a great arm chair viewer, all that is missing is the popcorn. Thank you for another great video.
@@libbysevicke-jones3160 Thanks. Now the weather is settling I will be able to continue and put out another video.
That's awesome man . Interesting that you got the heater just to consume more power . Like to see more on your solar system. Composting toilet👍interested to toilet set up
Im usually watching martial arts or 4x4 mod videos. But im loving this content subscribed and watched all in one go. Awesome 👍 mahi brother. Josh from Helensville
@@J-cos Thanks mate appreciate it.
@@LivinglandNZ your a skilled man looking forward to the next one:)
We only have native bush on our small block here in the Hokianga, but it is surprising how much firewood l get out just by doing tree management. Last year after Cyclone Gabriel we scored some black wattle from the neighbours. I chopped as much as l could, however a good amount was very knotty. Hubby finally got to it last month. Three chainsaw blades later. I stacked it all in the wood shed and it felt like l was staking concrete. Hubby built our wood shed. Over engineered, over time and over priced. We joke it’s cyclone, earthquake, and nuclear bombproof 🤣🤣🤣🤣 The neighbours tell us they are coming to our place next time there is a natural disaster. Keep up the good work, it’s great to see Kiwi content.
Awesome ! I have a Black wattle log I have been drying for about 8 years now, Im going to slab it and make a coffee table.
Are you killing native rodents though with those bait stations? 😢
@@rebeccasnell2953 We don’t have native rodents, I’m in New Zealand
@@LivinglandNZ oh, I knew you didn't have snakes, but i didn't realise NZ has no native rodents as well.
@@rebeccasnell2953 Yeah the only native mammal we have are two species of very small bat. We only have native birds and some reptiles. Everything else is introduced and a pest.
Hi, been following for a while. Im curious, your pole shed isnt consented, and now youve build these other 2 cabins. As far as i can tell you're supposed to have a consented main dwelling before you can build minor dwellings. I totally understand your longer term plan to build your own cabin, then do that legally, but how are you planning to deal with the council when they come to do the first inspection and you've got all these other minor dwellings about? Will you just call them sheds or something? The whole thing makes me irate, if you have a primary dwelling then you're free to build an unconsented minor with no toilet, water etc. But if you dont have a primary dwelling you cant build an unconsented under 30sqm + seperate composting toilet (which doesnt need consent anyway). It seems like then council have to clip the consent ticket once on each parcel of land, even if the buildings / systems wouldnt require consent otherwise.
You dont need consent for a rural farm shed up to 110sqm if it's pre-permitted which mine is. The cabins do no have power or water connected and are not being lived in. Might still be a grey area but Im not really bothered.
Not all venison is off grid! My friend in Connecticut simply opens the kitchen window on opening day and arrows delicious Deer eating the flowers then tags the deer 🦌 and has neighbor who are deer butchers process the carcass! Not how I do it but to each his own. 😂 ❤🦌🦌🦌🦌
Hi thanks for sharing your story we live on a lifestyle block in Masterton not as big as yours but loving watching your progress regards Hank and Richard
