I’d like to point out that Paris had a pretty significant redevelopment in the mid-19th century during the second empire period, which could be what it’s based on? Idk that’s the only straw I can grasp at and even then if it’s the case then the trailer seems a bit anachronistic at best

The thing that always gets me is when you talk to Ninetales and finish your trek. Your partner just…breaks down. Out of relief. It’s very humanizing and it makes them feel real-this whole time, you can tell they were toughing it out because they believed in you, and to finally have that validated just…the catharsis, man. It’s so good. Does make me wonder-what if Ninetales gave you a different answer? What would happen to your partner? They’d be crushed, obviously. A part of me thinks the game devs would’ve just had them accept it and move on-keep supporting you in spite of it. But I think it would be so interesting to have your partner…stop believing in you for a bit. Make them angry and hurt-at you. The ANGST.

Theorizing is definitely fun though. But yeah, I doubt anyone will really be correct. You can’t solve a story when the storyteller hasn’t finished reading it to you. Theorizing is a fun past time while we wait for Deltarune’s completion.

This makes me think about how Snowgrave route kinda makes sense. We're playing for this "soul" character (allegedly, but I don't actually think that the player is a character in the game) and we promised a vessel of our choice to control at the start. Then the soul is put in already formed kid instead and we're told that our choices don't matter. Ok, so our job to help Kris to figure out problems, that's fine. Except no one who knows about Soul is happy with it. Kris puts it away, Ralsey distracts it from conversations. If everyone acts as if the soul is a nuisance, no matter how helpful it is, the soul might as well decide to act as a nuisance 🤷‍♀️ I still wonder what's a point of it being here anyway, if we're just stopping Kris from developing identity and all. FINALLY. SOMEONE ELSE SAID IT. Look, I like the Volo fight, and fighting against both of Giratina's forms was a highlight for me. That being said...Volo just sucks as a villain, ESPECIALLY as a twist villain, and I'm so sick of pretending that he's so well written. This dude stalks us for most of the game before pulling the rug out from under us, and a lot of us either were unsatisfied or saw the twist coming from a mile away. Sometimes both. And do not even get me started on the argument that him teaching you the Backstrike Technique is supposed to be foreshadowing; hitting a Pokémon in the back to make catching or battling them easier is common sense! You want Volo done right? Look at Akechi from Persona 5. We see Akechi as early as the first chapter, but we don't get properly introduced to him until Chapter 3. From then on, we're given the option to befriend him and find out who he is as a person, and he doesn't even find out the Phantom Thieves' true identities until Chapter 5, which is halfway through the whole game. Afterwards, he cozies up to us hoping to lure us to our downfall, but with quick thinking, we outsmart him and find out he was the one behind the main conflict of the game. And the equivalent of the Backstrike Technique moment? Akechi overhears Morgana and it's treated as a throwaway line, but that one line told the party that Akechi was untrustworthy and that we needed to befriend him to learn his true motives. So why not use that? Why not have Volo be so desperate to meet Arceus that Giratina manipulates him into helping free him from the Distortion World, and then Volo realizes his horrible mistake? Or have Giratina be the one who chose Volo in the same way Arceus chose us? Instead, Volo is an obsessive religious megalomaniac who hides his true colors for the entire game, and takes credit for opening the rift and driving the Nobles crazy...which literally was all Giratina's doing. Nice rivals can work. Barry, Cheren, Bianca, and Hau have some combination of personality, goals, and story. They dont need to be antagonistic to be effective. The X and Y rivals only have one moment that feels like true rivalry: the battle for the mega stone. Even that feels like it could be better. Really, Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor could be condensed into one character (perhaps someone who feels conflicted on what they want), or if they want to keep the group aspect (which is a good idea if done right), just give them more character than "guys who say things during cut scenes." Calum/Serena could receive more attention such building up to the Mega Stone face off more and either a pre-Elite 4 Mega Evolution so that plot point isn't relegated to an optional post-game battle or a bigger post-game event with her Mega if they want to keep that post-game

I disagree on the idea that the gameplay loop of the in game routes has more merit than its often appreciated but yeah... writing wise these games are kinda lowkey stuck on the gb nes era, where most of the npcs just tell you were to go next or exposition to what, at the time, couldn't follow show don't tell due to limitations. Like where most other franchises evolved ts writing style into something more natural from that, pokemon always felt like while its writing did evolve over time, it did so very stilted so it kinda goes into this uncanny valley of implementing most attributes like theme or tone into it but with this utilitarian expositive way or doing so that they didn't completely shake off from the gb era. Like it makes itself very evident to me in a specific example in scarlet and violet when in area zero the writing style completely shifts and the characters are having actual character rich banter with each other and the final is so naturally written in comparison with the rest of the game that it made me make an actual double take.

I don't really understand how this video goes from really good analysis to something that is seemingly made in bad faith, I love the editing but you really need to respond to certain people about that ending instead of ignoring them.

Bold move, writing an essay about an unfinished story that says: the story is unfinished. Though as far as "theory-crafting" and its ilk is concerned, Toby clearly encourages it. He's not signalling to his readers: just wait, there's nothing to think about yet. He's hiding shit in email newsletters and building html labyrinths beneath fundraisers. He created an entire pseudo-character who explicitly reinforces active engagement before, during, and after game/chapter releases. I happen to agree with you that almost no story is fully reverse-engineerable from its initial chapters, but you also have to consider what the author is signaling to their readers. This video is basically saying "see all this honey Toby set out? It's silly that flies are attracted to it!" which seems bizarre, or at least stubborn. At this point his readers have been waiting years for new chapters, so I don't necessarily think the sentiment "hey, you've hashed out as much as you're gonna hash out" is wrong, but I don't think it holds water as a comprehensive statement towards the whole work. DR/UT is clearly engineered in such a way that the reaction you've written a polemic against is actually encouraged.

As a nonbinary person who is repeatedly misgendered day-to-day, seeing the effort you put into acknowledging and enforcing that Kris is nonbinary and only uses they/them- It means a lot to me. I've had every excuse in the book thrown at me why Kris 'might actually be a boy (or) girl', despite the fact that the game itself gives us the answer repeatedly. I even had one person say it was 'left up to interpretation' which felt like they were missing the whole point of Kris not being a player-stand-in, and you imposing your idea of what binary gender you think they should be, being antithetical to the whole thesis of Kris- ANYWAY- This is an amazing video, the editing is so fun and snappy. ok this may be a hot take but I think frisk doesn't do what kris does because frisk is dead they died from the fall and a SOUL just fell into the human and when a SOUL inhabits a live person its like a long long LONG cut scene where kris can't do ANYTHING and that's why kris activly fights our control

With the darkners "being made" to help lightners to some degree makes sense. They do place a lot of emphasis on the fact that darkners/exist/ to help lightners. That that is their purpose. I don't know if they're tailor made for people who step in but helping lightners is their reason for being so it would make sense that most folks who stray into a dark world would be helped in a similar way

About your rant about theory crafting at the end, I have an issue with a sort of reverse of "extremely speculative and game changing theories", that actually ends up having the same problem. I call them "anti-theories". These theories are that despite Toby Fox placing dislogue in the game foreshadowing Mike, the introduction man (who is most likely Gaster), or even the Knight, these detsils are somehow... not foreshadowing, it's either a coincidence or a joke meant to subvert our expectations. None of this makes any sense in the context of the story, when the simplest explanation is that these are just teases and foreshadowing for later. The simplest base theory for the vessel maker guy is that he's a plot point, a Chekov's gun, that will be important to the story later on, even if we don't know how. If you make Deltarune so that the Vessel maker guy ISN'T relevant, that is actually just bad writing and not subversive, good stories don't just introduce plot points, and a framing device, the first thing we see in the game, and have it never matter ever again. Now, how this character will be important is unclear, but this character, as Toby Fox introduced him first, as he's important to the framing device of Deltarune connecting to the player's soul, is basically required to be relevant later in the story, because that's basic setup and payoff. And as a side note, some people act the story will have plot points that will be dropped as jokew, just for the sake of subversion. People really do get too into the "indie horror game" theory mindset
