4:55 As a non-Japanese Pokemon fan that has ACTUALLY played other monster collectors, I'm gonna help ya out with a little history. Dragon Quest did monster collecting YEARS before Pokemon. It had a function to bet on monster battles in DQ3 8 years before RBY release and recruiting and battling with monster pals in DQ5 4 years before RBY release. By all accounts, Pokemon is a Dragon Quest knockoff but westerners will try to avoid such a discussion. The more you look into the development of RBY, the more it becomes apparent how much influence Dragon Quest's monster collecting and RPG elememts had on Pokemon. It was confirmed in an interview from the devs part of why Pokemon even had trading was because they wished they could trade rare items in the Dragon Quest games they played and loved. Many of Pokemon's RBY monsters are just Dragon Quest monsters under a different artstyle. The more you look through the monster roster from DQ1 to DQ6 makes it all the more obvious with things like Boreal Serpent (Gyarados), Gasbag (Koffing), Sabrecat and Great Sabrecat (Growlithe, Arcanine), Great Dragon (Dragonite), etc. They even function the same too. Like Spiked Hare with its Psyche Up skill and Nidoran Male with Focus Energy. Even woth Pokemon that were originally planned to be part of RBY like Gligar looks exactly like Rumblebee from the old Dragon Quest games. It is also no exaggeration to say Dragon Quest always succeeded where Pokemon failed. It was confirmed part of why RBY had seperate versions is cuz they wanted to make the game have procedurally generated maps so each copy was personalized. They never got it to work so they settled on seperate versions. Meanwhile Dragon Quest Monsters actually got it to function with random dungeon floors. Also fusion is not a new mechanic to Dragon Quest Monsters. It's been a mainstay in the series for over 20 years and the game is actually designed around convoluted fusion trees to get rare and strong monsters.
Oh shit. I knew that the first SMT predated Pokémon as a Monster Collector in '87. When did DQ do it? Never been much for Dragon Quest myself, something about the Toriyama artstyle on the human characters rubs me the wrong way. The Fusion thing is only really in my mind now because of the Infinite Fusion fangame that just... goes WAY too hard on scope for any commercial project.
@@TheLudomancer Dragon Quest 3 with its monster betting feature came out in 1988. Dragon Quest 5 which had a proper monster collecting system came out in 1992 (Play the DS remake. The sprites are gorgeous even moreso than Pokemon BW). Dragon Quest Monsters (otherwise referred to as Terry's Wonderland) which started the series with its staple fusion system came out in 1998. Even the first Dragon Quest Monsters had convoluted fusion paths, mind you. Yeah, I don't care much for the humans suffering from infamous Toriyama sameface that leads to iconic characters like Bianca just looking like a blonde Bulma either. The monsters on the other hand are a different story for me. If you think THAT'S impressive, look into the indie game Cassette Beasts. That monster collector has the Pokemon Infinite Fusion thing as an actual battle mechanic and as overworld minibosses.
Glad to see you get excited for a lot of the games shown off in the Direct Ludo! And I’m right there with you on Persona 5 Tactica! Not sure if I’ll get it on Switch but I’m going to get it for sure! Nintendo seems to be firing on all cylinders here.
I'm glad to see someone else call out the Pikmin spirit bomb! (Also, your doofy bat-boy from Dragon Quest is called 'Drackyma', from the Dracky family of monsters. You might also want to look up 'Tubby Dracky' and 'Choccy Dracky'. They are all fren.
Oooh, is the new script Star Force? Because that's something I've never played, despite being a huge Battle Network fan. And after you got me into Fossil Fighters, I am ready for more takes!
Dragon Quest Monsters always had spending two monsters to make a new one. Either by making them fuck or fusion. It’s not a new thing just a confirmation that nothing was ruined.
It's the first I've heard of it. The Toriyama artstyle usually rubs me the wrong way. This just makes it even funnier that it's been such a fixture of both SMT And DQM as a solution to the genre's problems but Game Freak hasn't even attempted to take notes.
Uploading this within 24 hours of launch killed me.
PLEASE Release a new Video reacting to the subtember direct I love your responses

@@TheLudomancer Sure thing!
I'm SO glad Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks so... wacky and weird. Immediately it has way more identity than New Super Mario Bros Wii or U ever had.
