Alaska Ep 5 - Sign Post Forest - Major Trailer Issue
Well, that didn't go as planned. That could be our catchphrase of the year. From our attempted trip to Texas for the eclipse with our truck problems, to this.
Things seemed to be going well, other than the further north we went the worse the roads became. From torn up roads covered in gravel, to frost heaves, to pot holes that seemed to be getting bigger and bigger. Other then that, it seemed OK.
We got up to Big Creek Governmental Campground and we noticed some edging trim on the trailer was popped out and not sitting right. As we investigated further we found a major problem. Our trailer frame was cracked and starting to bend. What now...
We checked the local area and found that Watson Lake was the closest "town" to us. We headed there to empty our holding tanks as we believe that both our grey and black tanks sit behind the axle. We also removed the spare tire and put it in the bed of the truck and moved items around the inside of the trailer to make the tailer rear end as light as possible.
Since we found ourselves in Watson Lake we decided to make the most of it and visit the sign post forest, and hang up our signs we made just for this occasion. It was very impressive to see the sign post forest and to put up our signs there. What fun!
We then continued on to Whitehorse, the capitol of the Yukon, to try and find some help. I also called a cousin of mine that lives in Homer Alaska, to see if he had any suggestions or ideas. A friend of his told us to get in touch with Ron as he has helped out in difficult situations before. When we got in touch with Ron he said he did not do any welding but to get with Jacobs Industries 4269 4th Avenue Whitehorse Yukon. They not only helped out but fixed it in one day!!!
Thanks so much to Jacobs Industries for taking on our trailer issues and helping us get back on the road to Alaska!!

Alaska Ep 4 - Hyder and the Bears
มุมมอง 2716 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
We have made it! We are in Alaska. So Hyder Alaska is the most southernly town in Alaska that you can actually drive to. You have to reach it through Stewart BC which is right across the border. Hyder is a fun little town of about 30 - 50 residents, depending on the time of year. Some folks don't stick around for the cold snowy winters, but others choose to stay there permanently. The claim to ...
Sewing with Sonja - Episode 1

Welcome to Sewing with Sonja. Figured since we have finished the trip quilt we needed to come up with another title for Sonja's sewing videos, so here it is :) We have headed of to Alaska with the intent to hit quilt stores along the way. So far we haven't had great success as the first few tries at stores have fallen short. Some we hit on the wrong day and were closed, others should have been ...
Alaska Ep 3 - Barkerville, BC
มุมมอง 33921 วันที่ผ่านมา
Our first main stop on the trip was a place Sonja had been to as a kid and wanted to go back. Barkerville historic goldrush town in British Columbia. I had never been there before and it was fun to see her excitement when we got there. The ghost town is coming back to life as they have turned several of the business back into, well, businesses. The candy shop was open, the blacksmith was making...

What do you do when your headed to Alaska and passing the signpost forest in Watson Lake Canada? You make a sign... Our friends @CysCorner invited us up to do another intarsia sign, this time specifically for the signpost forest. Stan and Cy also did one using a matching pattern and we are going to go up and put them up in the signpost forest. It was amazing to have Sonja there too for working ...

Alaska Ep 1 - Planning and Prepping
มุมมอง 25หลายเดือนก่อน
Alaska will be our 49th state to visit in our marriage. We hit the rest of the lower forty eight on our trip in 2021, leaving only Alaska and Hawaii as the last two states not visited. We've been thinking of the trip to Alaska for some time and are finally going to take it. We sent months, if not years surfing the internet for things to do and see in Canada and Alaska and from that made a basic...
RV Modification Updates

Hello everyone, this time around we talk about the modifications we have done to the trailer and how they are working out for us. From the bike rack hitch, to the counter extension and sink, to the lithium acceptable converter, to the medicine cabinet, and table legs. Most things seem to be working good. Some things needed improving. I guess it's a constant battle since the trailer shakes shimm...

We've made lots of progress on the trip quilt. Sections are coming together and the quilt is taking shape. It has been such a wonderful project and it is so rewarding to see it coming together. Each section has its own special memories, from the quilt shops we visited and the fabrics bought there, to family drawing special blocks to applique into the quilt. And of course, each and everyone of y...

Botched Texas Trip - Time to Regroup and Plan Something Different
Our first trip to Alaska we stopped in Hyder on way back down to lower 48. We had to opportunity to experience the bears too. It was such an amazing time for us. Glad you got to experience it too.
Please don't add background music when you are talking, it is distracting and makes it hard to hear what you are saying.
Cool! Way beyond just taking a router to a board to make a sign!
Very cute!!!
Perseverance. Some days just go like that. I am currently sorting through 10 years of fabric!! Time to pass some of it o.
This was a great tour. Thanks so much. Very informative and just what we needed to see. We are about to purchase a new R-POD. I love all of your modifications. I'm sure we will make them as well.
Hello:) Everytime I've drove the Alcan is always exciting:) I have to get up there some day and look at my 160 acres at Red devil Ak..has been in the family since 1973:)
That Park in Oregon is nice until it gets flooded with Haitian immigrants
Great road trip - thanks for sharing 🙂
This is so beautiful !
Wow! How neat. Hope you get aa picture where you hang it so we can see it!
So much fun to see the trip quilt finished up! So many great memories for both of you!! Not only did I enjoy following the series (and I've got quite a few episodes still to watch), I love how perfect the finished quilt looks on the camper bed!! I can't wait to do something similar if my husband and I ever finally get that dream RV we've long wanted. And yes, every quilt project has that "Are We There Yet?!?" moment during construction, LOL!!
Great job, it is beautiful!!!!
Wow! WELL DONE!!!! It is absolutely fantastic. It looks so beautiful, and I'm sure it's even nicer on the bed. What a beautiful work of love, labor, and adventure, a true work of art and I'm sure a family heirloom.
This is absolutely show-stopping! I probably started with your site a year ago, and now it is finished. I admire all your talents from choosing the fabric to picking a traditional pattern to feature those fabrics! I love all the little trees, which inspired me to buy a similar pattern from the shop in Livingston, MT last year. Alas, it remains undone, as do many of my grand ideas. Your perseverance in completing this labor of love will push me forward to find that pattern and pull a project together to work on this fall. Congratulations on a great and entertaining video! Now you can enter it in a competition!!
The quilt is beautiful and looks great on your trailer bed! And my little pumpkin quilt now graces my mantel for fall. I'll try to take a picture of it and send to you!
Just returned from a quick trip to Burien and Longview to see family and friends. Weather was lovely except for 2 days of rain. Still love the PNW.
Honey bear is our favorite place.
Loved watching your trip quilt come together - always amazes me! And the mini quilt - your meticulous placement and seeing it come together was so fun! It's in my sewing room (where I rarely even mend - ha) leaning up against a picture frame right now waiting for fall. . . I love it! Surely do miss you but praying for an exceptional trip with special times and memories all along the way . . . Deuteronomy 31:8
Thank you! It was a journey of its own getting it done! And I'm so happy you like the mini quilt.
The travel quilt is so beautiful! Despite all the ‘do-overs’, you made it work. I have found that all the little frustrations are worth fixing so the perfection I have created will please me more than if I had not gone back and made it right. Bravo! Thank you for noting my battery-operated machine comment. It wasn’t 2 days later that I watched a utube on just such a machine! They were not quality machines, but if you had to use one, they do exist!! I want to do some research and see just what is available. All I need is a straight stitch, reverse, and maybe a zig-zag. Sounds quite easy to make.
That is amazing that they actually make machines like that...they stole your brilliant idea! 😂. Thank you so much for your comments about the quilt. I can hardly believe it's actually done!
You are SO talented. I’m sewing as I watch you, thinking I have never tackled anything like your project!! It will be a real work of art and you should be so very proud. I hope you get a 1st place ribbon for all your work.
Thank you so much for your kind comments! I didn't finish it in time for the show, but I have made good progress on it!
@@somedaychronicles3728 you can enter it next year! Sisters, too. I hope to make it out there to see Sisters one year.
Thank you! And it's nice to think you are sewing a long with me 😊. (Ps, I've never tackled anything like this before either!!)
Beautiful quilt - well done. 🙂
Thank you! I am so excited about getting real progress made on it!
Always great to visit family. Nice drive down the road.
Thank you!
Do you see Epic Family Road-trip? I watched them this morning. They have gone through quite an evolution of adventure vehicles.
No, we haven't seen them, we will have to look them up!
@@somedaychronicles3728 you will enjoy them. The wife/mom is from OR so they have gone several times to visit.
I love the extension you made. Would you consider sharing your plan for the construction of it. I’m curious if the is a lip on the top of the extension sticks up into the existing counter? or does it just slide in. Do you find it strong enough with the size of the 45’s you used for support? Your response would be appreciated. Thx😊
Thanks for commenting! There is no lip, it is just flat and slides in. It is for sure strong enough because if we are camping in the winter, we go dry, and use a 6 gallon jug with a spigot on the counter and extension for our water, so it has held a good bit of weight. Hopefully in an upcoming episode we can get into more details of how it was made. I don't really make plans, just sketches and wing it from there usually :)
Thank you! I'm from Prineville and had to miss the show. ♥️
You are so welcome, thank you for commenting, and glad you enjoyed it :)
I did not see a MPPT for charging your batteries if your going solar and a hint bring a inverter genset if your coming up here we get more rain than sun along the coast of B.C to Alaska I know I live here and have fished it all, Good luck have fun I hope you have Starlink works great up here
Thanks for commenting and for the advice! The solar has charge controller mounted on it, and we are looking forward to some good fishing! :)
Nice video. We live in Bend and love coming to this area to camp and fish.
Thank you for commenting! Glad you enjoyed it :)
depending on the inverter load they can get hot. you may need to test it more to check. also if those are lead acid batteries you will need more. rule of thumb is cut the amp hour rating in half as you will never come close to what they say. i learned this doing my solar setup in my shuttle bus for boondocking. also it is critical to make sure your wire is pure copper. amazon is filled with aluminum copper coated cheap chinese wire. this wire was banned in usa home wiring from so many house burning down. rv places, stereo installers, solar stores folks call it the crawling crud. anything that wire connects to gets oxidized within a year. the aluminum wire is a horrible conductor and oxidizes super quick from the heat. copper welding cable is the stuff if you want to make your own. i went that route and used those same crimpers. they work really nice and i was glad i got them as my setup is slightly bigger. thanks for sharing your adventures.
Thank you for the info! We do have lithium batteries, and it IS copper wire, and we will keep an eye on it to make sure it is staying cool. Those crimpers are amazing, aren't they? :)
You have to find space for the sewing machine!! You could also hand-sew some hexes and make a quilt from that!
I have the bottom shelf of our pantry dedicated to sewing maching/sewing projects! I am excited about the idea of being able to use my machine even if we aren't hooked up to shore power! We've had a few trips I knew we wouldn't have power, or not much, so I have not even taken it. It's ok if I still have hand projects to work on, but I don't always have something ready to go. Thanks for commenting!
@@somedaychronicles3728 I suppose they have not come out with battery operated machines yet. What a great idea, tho! The new power setup looked hefty, but I know little about them. I know you won’t be bored on your travels.
@@carolejameson9261 Wouldn't that be amazing?!?!? I've wondered before about a portable way to do a treadle, never thought about battery lol.
@@somedaychronicles3728 if they can make power tools with battery, they should be able to fashion a basic machine!
I did that too except I did it on two sides, and didn’t fix it, I just gifted that one to me! It is just more snug but it works.
Thank you for sharing that! It's good to know it would work anyway!
I love it there!
We did too! Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for your visit, hope you enjoyed your stay from overnight camp host Jeremy.
We enjoyed our visit very much and hope to stay again! Thanks for commenting!
Lovely!!!
Thank you!
The side extension or counter space could be put on hinges and the fireplace stored under the sofa. At night sit the trash can out of the way and have a clear path to your side of the bed.
Thanks for commenting! Unfortunately the counter extension can't go on hinges as the outlet on that side sticks out about 2 or 2 1/2" so it wouldn't be able to fold down. The fireplace is nifty because we can put it under the couch, or under the table at night, or when traveling, that shoe spot under the dinette bench just inside the door fits it like it was made for it!
Isn’t Sisters Oregon where they have a big quilt show every summer?
Yes, the Sister's Outdoor Quilt show is the 2nd Saturday in July!
Shoot! I would have liked to see your video on that. But, I’ve been in your shoes several times over the years.
We just purchased a 2023 RPod 192. Thank you for sharing some great ideas. I would love to see more videos explaining in more detail how you mounted the kitchen counter extension. Also love the small medicine cabinet in the bathroom. How did you mount it?
This is from our reply to this question somewhere down in the other comments: Thanks for the question! He used 6 command strips (at each corner and then middle of each side and then also screws. He said he got lucky and the top two screws went into the metal frame. Hope that helps
Love the lighthouse!!!
Thank you! That was drawn by Keith :)
The quilting on the clouds looked good! And finished is always better than perfect! ❤️
Thank you!
The quilts on the walls of shop were beautiful!
Don't you love that it is like a free little quilt show every time you go into a quilt shop? I think that is one of the things I like the most about visiting them. Other than chatting with the lovely people!
There is no place quite like the Oregon coast. When we lived closer we went all the time. Now that we live in the NE part of the state we still try to get there at least 3x a year. It is beautiful.
I agree! I love the coast!
What a great and personal project intarsia gift from you to your wife! Its awesome. You did a great job. I'm Cys friend Mel from the East Coast. Keep up the good work. Make some more projects.
