Glazing Guide for Miniature Painting

In today’s video let’s talk about glazing in miniature painting. What is glazing? What is it good for? Should you use it or not and if yes then how? Let’s find out together! A quick disclaimer before we start. I have been painting miniatures for a few years now and I would like to believe that I have become a pretty decent painter over the years, but I am always learning new things. If you aske...

Always love it when you paint Infinity! Awesome job.
What a tutorial, I'm going to have a go at this, ive been wanting to paint my spearhead of flesh eater courts with traditional painting rather than contrast methods
I was just scrolling down to comment that I would love to see the PanO side of the box as well. 🤣
It will happen! I can't resist the temptation to paint that nice blue and gold color scheme 😀
Once again on point ! Amazing job. I have been painting some AoS for a while now, but my Deathwing Knights have been built and primed for a few months now, sitting on the shelf next to my painting desk. Wanted to go back to them after being hyped up by the Warhammer Secret Level episode on Prime Video, the timing of your video couldn't be more perfect. I'm gonna steal some parts of your recipe to try it out !
Have fun with them! I enjoyed painting them way more than I thought I would 😁
Flawless as always !!
Thanks 😊
already painted my deathwing knights up in a really weird scheme I came up with... But I see Deathwing knights and I have to watch.
I like that attitude :D I hope it was worth your time (and you can always paint some more knights :P)
@@ph3lansminiatures 100% worth the time to watch it. I might have to grab some more and follow this along
Dang you really woke up and choose violence with that Ultramarines are better than Dark Angels comment 😂 Also I'm definitely stealing that ink trick for the gold nmm.
The truth hurts sometimes :P
Stunning result! (also that AK Dark Green looks so much like the real stuff for their robes)
Thanks!
Hey everyone! This is the last video for the year, so I hope you will enjoy it! Let me know which chapters you want me to paint next year! :) Happy holidays everyone!
Very nice.
Thank you! :)
Looks amazing. The colours really make me realise how many painting techniques i can learn Would you be able to do a how to for black templars?
I have an older Dark Templar video on the channel :) But I also have an Emperor's Champion assembled and primed, plus a lot of unassembled Dark Templars in boxes so it is like that I will do a How to video in the near future :)
I’ve tried glazing some lighter colors as a bridge between upper layers on a mini. The lighter colors seem to glaze in a dusty, chalky finish. Is there a way to avoid that?
Hmm, is it possible that you are not waiting long enough for the layers to dry before going in with new ones? You can also try to avoid painting with colors that have a lot of white in them. Basically try glazing down instead of up, dragging the darker color from the highlights towards the shadows rather than the other way around. I hope that helps!
What is the brand of that pure orange? I've not seen it before Great video btw
Thanks :) It is Kimera Kolors Orange.
Fantastic job!
Glad you like it! )
Stunning work sir
Thanks 😊
I really struggle to get the Kimera colours, does anyone have a good substitute for the Cartacci Red colour at all?
Thank you for the guide. You comment on how everyone makes mistakes gives me confidence because thats the stage im at now.
I remember when I started painting I was terrified of making mistakes and messing things up. Since then I still make plenty of mistakes, I just know better how to fix them 🤣 ( and occasionally to avoid them) You need to have experience for that though, and you build that by making mistakes and learning from them. So, you see, mistakes are necessary 😁
A fantastic paint scheme with phenomenal execution - these really are outstanding! Kind regards, Steve
That looks amazing. Out of curiosity, roughly how long did the diorama take from start to finish?
It took me around 50 hours combined for painting both factions and completing the base 🙂
be cool if i was allowed to buy these guys! a month since this short was out and the starter set hasn't been available for a single day in that time
Hey this is the mini that has got me interested in Infinity. Where did you get the base from?
It seems this is a mini that gets a lot of people into infinity 😁 The base is an official 55mm scenery base for Infinity made by corvus belli.
@@ph3lansminiatures That's great thank you. It really is a great mini and you've done an amazing job with it too 😁
Stupid question, but the paint on my wet pallette never looks anything like what I see on youtube. I tried thinning paint down in the same way as you did and instead of beading up (like I see on yours and other channels) it just thins then dries almost immediately. I wonder if I am not using enough water, or if I am doing something wrong. I use a red grass pallette with this sheets and would appreciate any advice
That's interesting 🤔 I also used the redgrass palette for a while ( I still do occasionally) and it behaves pretty much the same as the Green Stuff World one you see in the video. I also suspect that you are not using enough water (there should be a couple of mm of water left around the foam) or that you live in a very dry climate with very low humidity?
@@ph3lansminiatures No Idea. Definitely not humidity, I live in the UK so not a dry low humidity environment haha. Do you use the paper that comes with the palettes? It just seems that no matter how much water I use, when I look at your paper (and other youtuber's paper) it's like there is a hydro effect where the paint almost sits above the paper, whereas using the redgrass paper it's like a normal paint (granted it is naturally thinner)
I'm generally not a fan of contrast/speedpaints, but for a team of Ariadna, I tried it out. Hated the finish with just the speedpaints, especially the faces, but when I layered on and highlighted with conventional acrylics I actually got a result that I really liked for tabletop quality. In the end trying something new worked well, and added another tool to the toolbox for me. Next project is some Tartary figs, which I'll use the same style, different colour scheme.
Pour les For black hair, personally, I ended up finding that a single solid black colour looked better than the usual highlights because in 32mm scale, the black lighting gave the impression that they were 50 years old. I also tried the manga hair methods, which were generally highlighted in blue, which worked better but sometimes there was an impression of inconsistency with the subject, in the end a single black colour looked better for me, but sometimes, depending on the hair, I light certain edges in dark grey. I'm going to call this method of painting ‘minimalism’, and in this minimalist approach Onion Knight Miniature Painting is at an excellent level.
im a rust effect addict, what exactly is the rust effect you use? Cheers.
I was using Rust Textures from Green Stuff World :)
@@ph3lansminiatures Cheers. Off to the internet to buy some! :)
Awesome! Infinity miniatures are very nice
They are indeed 😊
why u limit yourself with a time limit?
I like to paint a single model for 10+ hours, but 7 models for 70+ hours is a bit too much :D And I think most people are in the same boat. So when I paint whole squads or groups of models I usually like to spend as much time on them as I would on a single high quality paint job. It is quite fun to see how much quality I can squeeze out of the time I have 😀
What brush are you using? It keep a great tip.
It is a Green Stuff World Gold Series brush.
Fantastic job here, looks great!
Thanks!
That's a killer paintjob, I love how you painted that red, with that subtle but vibrant glazing by the end.
Thanks :) Reds are pretty difficult to get right I find, so it is great to hear that you like it.
amazing job as usual <3
Thank you!
Hell yeah this is the content I’ve been waiting for
😄 I love that the Infinity gang is always so happy about the videos.
excellent
Hey guys! Would you like to see the PanO side of the box as well? 😊
100%
Heck ya!
Of course!
Yes!
yes pls
More Infinity!
Roger that 😁
Primer is Chaos Black?
It is Vallejo Airbrush primer, but Chaos Black spray will work just as well 😊
The plint is top top top !!
Great video as always! Can i ask you where i can find stl file of base that you use?
I found it by searching for Miniature Plinth in the Bambu Labs store ( it is the brand of my 3d printer and it has a ton of useful free files. It is part of a larger collection of plinths. I hope that helps :)
I keep coming back to this video to watch your highlight layering - it is so beautiful
This is the best death guard color scheme I have ever seen!
So... why is washes herecy? I have seen alot of wash hate lately and sure it ruins highlights... someone said the better you get, the less you use washes, but to me, a wash can make miracles sometimes. Should i be ashamed for using washes? Im a bit confused on this topic and wanna hear why there is so much hate on washes these days?
:D it was meant more like a joke. Washes absolutely have their uses, but the way they are used in the official games workshop painting style is aimed at people who care more about finishing the model fast, but don't care about how the end result looks (which is a perfectly valid approach if you just want to play ). You shouldn't be ashamed for using them at all. But if you want to get better at painting, you should consider learning ways to paint minis without them. ( At least mostly)
@ph3lansminiatures thanks for the kind answer.
Where do you get stickers from for the minis
The transfer sheet ( with the stickers ) came in the box together with the model. It was part of the Horus Heresy starter set.
beautiful! Loves these videos
Absolutely amazing
I really like it! Also I like the colours on both fractions 🫶
Smooth as hell
Recipe is also great for Conquest Old Dominion..
Liked and subscribed 😊
Welcome ☺️
I love the paint scheme but I wanna know what would be the alternative to the green from citadel
Really inspiring!
