Buying Refurbished Hard Drives From Ebay - What Could Go Wrong?
I needed to get some new hard drives for my Synology NAS but the cost of new large capacity drives is eye watering so I did something I've never done before and bought REFURBISHED hard drives from Ebay. What could possibly go wrong?
I'll take you through what I received and the price I paid, the drive SMART information, what tools I used in UNRAID to prove the drives before they went in my Synology NAS and how I ended up swapping all the drives in my NAS for the new drives.
So how successful was this and was it worth it?

I have bought brand new and refurbished and have had the same luck with both, I don't use raid or anything, I use JBOD on OMV, works well for me 😊
I have been using 4 20TBX20 Seagate Exos HDDs for a little over 1 year now and so far have had no problems with them and I'm not even sure if it was refurbished or resel the hard drives were in mint condition nothing on them at all not even the slightest fingerprint and thay are working like a charm. I paid roughly 300€ ~ £250.
That's a good price for such a newish model whether they were new or refurbished 👍
Does the Wiser work locally? So I can not connect it to my internet and just control it through HA? I don't intend to use a wiser app/create an account or anything other than HA.
The thing what kills hdd is high temperature! In your video it shows at 55C!!! That’s not good, really not good. Next time put fan right at them so they’re not exceeding 45C -that’s already plenty hot! Good video otherwise-very informative
Thanks for watching 👍 The EXOS drives do run a bit hotter, I believe 60C is the temperature to stay below for them. They had a fan pointing at them after that was recorded to keep them a little cooler 🙂 They sit comfortably at about 47C now in the NAS even when there's lots of activity.
when buying these drives ... should always buy an extra one put it in a cheap usb enclosure and attach it to your NAS then use it as ADDITIONAL extra backup for your important files only (so its used daily) if a drive fails in the nas can repalace with the spare straight away whilst you wait for the RMA'd drive then put the repalcement in the now empty usb enclosure... and so on ....
Good advice, another one I've read recently is to not fill all of your NAS bays - certainly this would have helped me when replacing the drives. You live and learn 🙂
Hi, just came across your channel, do you know if this has the ability to connect to the Yale Smart Alarm and TP-Link Tapo products via automations? I want my sensors to trigger the alarm if motion is detected or dorr sensors open inside - currently can't do it in Alexa or Google Home. Also can all products work with each other or are there limitations? Thanks for your help !
Hi, there are official Yale and TP LINK integrations in Home Assistant, I don't use Yale but a quick look at the integration suggests you can arm and disarm the alarm etc. I'm not sure about sounding the siren though but in theory what you're asking, cross device interaction, is exactly what Home Assistant was built for 🙂
What camera do you use?
Currently using a Lumix S5IIx, it's a lovely piece of kit 👍
@@Byteofgeek Nice, I am a real beginner with cameras, I use the Sony ZVE10
Great to see another good video mate!
Thanks, I figured some might find it useful as a lot of HA users back up to a NAS etc.
£9 a tb is really good. When you priced it that way, it makes new, ssd's at £100 per tb quite a lot more
Absolutely, ssds have their place but they cannot compete for large volume storage unfortunately whether that's new or refurbished drives
Interesting watch. Been contemplating a NAS for probably a year now. I was thinking second hand box and spending as much as I can on new large capacity drives, but this give more food for yet more thought!
Thanks for the feedback. I've always bought new myself and thought it was frowned upon to buy refurbished/renewed but it doesn't seem that way and the cost vs capacity can make it appealing
Very well spoken, informative content, and great production value. Cheers for sharing mate, this was a great watch!
Thanks, hopefully something useful in there 🙂
If you watched until the end, did it surprise you?
Unfortunately, not a massive surprise. I can see the attraction pricewise, but you're a braver man than me using secondhand drives of unknown history (especially if they're resetting S.M.A.R.T data) for anything vaguely important. At least you had warning that it was on it's way out.
@techieboy333 I think if these were standard desktop drives I'd almost certainly steer clear even though I do have a couple of 10+ year old drives that still work! However appreciate it's not for everyone and if it was precious content then I'd certainly think twice.
Nice video Thank you for the sharing Can I ask if the app allow share authority features allow us to share with family to control and monitor with the camera?
The speed of an hdd with reliability of emmc. What could go wrong
Yet oddly still performing perfectly fine since I did the video 🤔
Please help. I can't find the field to change the IEEE. Any help will be greatly appreciated. SLZB-06M. Thanks
Oh baby! This is so cool. Wish I would have thought about looking into this sooner lol. I have a nice 7-1 weather station mounted up above my roof. I'm a weather geek. It sends info to a display in the house. An ESP32 based display which doesn't provide any direct access to it. It does however use wifi to post weather stats up to Weather Underground and Weather Cloud websites to post realtime data. It's a free service but...one...it's not easy (before now) to bring into Home Assistant. Two, I have ESP8266 based sensors all over the house....lol. Because... I'm a geek for this stuff...lol. From AHT20 Temp/hum sensors to ENS160 CO2, volatile gas, IAQ sensors to MQ2 smoke and gas sensors (because the smoke alarms on the walls, won't send me anl notification if I'm away from home, telling me I left the soldering iron on again and burning down the house....lol). The other really cool part is... Weather Underground is terrible for getting your data from them. Weather Cloud is a bit better. You can download your data but only for a year. Have to pay for more. I'm also a geek for stats! So, with InfluxDB and Grafana I recently installed.... Now I can have my data, on my network! I freaking love HA!!! Great video, Mate! I'll need to check this out tonight. About to grill up some steaks. 😉 Cheers,Mate!
Thanks for watching and glad it's brought this to your attention, sounds like the perfect thing to use for what you need 👍
Unpopular opinion: Automations are just scripts with triggers, and should be combined
Interesting thought 🤔
hey would this work on my 2019 audi q3?
Possibly too new I think
I use the Frigate blueprint and can definitely say that it is great. I only use it to notify my phone, haven't tried the TV part yet but will when I get time to test it out
I must look into Frigate at some point, let me know if the TV notifications work out 👍
I use actionable notifications for my medication reminder in the mornings... can't live without it now!...i got a blueprint from HA forums (sorry can't remember who made it?.)...but it's brilliant!
That's a great use for it 👍
I followed your steps but mines doesn't work. I currently got a sonoff dongle e and am trying to migrate to the slzb-06. When i try running z2m webUI it keep saying 502 bad gateway. Can you please help.
Check your configuration to make sure you've got the right IP address, also make sure you don't have any reference to the USB dongle any more. Check this in the configuration file in your Zigbee2MQTT folder using file editor
@@Byteofgeek Thanks for the reply. I will give that a try and see if it works.
I made my own camera Notification that utilises back track recording so when motion is detected it will grab the 15 seconds before the motion and 15 seconds :) also with the actionable notifications code to select if I want to watch live view or watch the recording Let me know if you want the code !
That sounds impressive! Do you have it on GitHub to share?
Please can you share
Yes please share.
doesn't the actionable notification script need to be combined with an automation? How does it know when to send the notification?
Yes that's correct which is why it's saved as a script rather than an automation 👍
Nice to see what the community has created nowadays to make things easy. I created my own 'notification engine' in node red before the blueprints concept was created.
Yes some really good work being done to make it easier for everyone
Are you still happy with it? 🙂
Absolutely, and the cat is too 😀
Insights+ is not subscription based. You need a piece of hardware (once off cost of £20) to connect to your electricity smart meter and that's it.
Thanks for pointing that out, I missed it in editing and realised afterwards that it wasn't - I think I had Tado on my mind at the time 😀
I have been using Prowl for years. It was one of the original notification apps. I still use it because it's simple, rock solid, generic to any device and there is a HA integration for it. The Camera snap shot integration looks interesting. Camera snapshots or any other trigger of cameras sending videos or doing anything have always been a pain for me as the response time is slow. I have been looking for appropriate "trigger" hardware for my front door camera for ages. Like a sensor on the gate. The problem is weather. And I can;t run cable there. If anyone knows of a good gate sensor that has a very long battery life, preferably zigbee (though wifi would be ok) easy to integrate into HA and IP66 water rated kindly let me know. 😀
I use an Aqara door sensor on a 3D printed case for my gate, got a temperature and humidity sensor in a 3D case and they both work well in all weather conditions. Doesn't have to be a 3D printed case though, there are a number of waterproof small boxes on Amazon and AliExpress
😊

Thanks for the great tutorial! :) Just a question: Where can I find the ieee address of my SkyConnect to write it on the new SLZB-06? Thanks for your help!
Are you currently using ZHA?
@@Byteofgeek thanks for the reply, but i already found the ieee address (i used z2m). But i have no input field on the UI of the SLZB-06M..
In the Z2M and ZHA menu option, is there nothing under Advanced at the bottom of the page?
@@Byteofgeek nothing.. I've tried to find it on every core-firmware version and every possible zigbee firmware version. Should I use any custom firmware to be able to overwrite the coordinator's ieee address?
No just the latest version of core and ZigBee should be fine. I suggest logging a ticket with the SMLIGHT team via their website, they're pretty good and should be able to help you find it.
10Gbe use case is a must for cache. Other wise it's useless.
and this NAS only has a 1GBe ethernet ports
@@Byteofgeek Have you tryed hook up 2 network cable aggregation with SMB multi channel enable on your 920+?
Yes I have mine set up with aggregation, that at least enables you to max out a 1GBe client
@@Byteofgeek That's good. Enable SMB multi channel and you will see a bit more snappy file transfer.
Thanks 👍 I'll give it a try
I tried Tuya Zigbee but did not think much of the range, so I hope you get better luck, I am now using LoRa that is much better.
tried to watch you vid but got so bored

How do i get free crap 😂?
Like the app features with ability to get the robot to clean a specific room, our robot don't have these options. Something you did no discuss is the ability to navigate loose objects like socks, soft toys and other items that it encounters, will it clean around them or try and suck them up? I cannot schedule our robot because I have to check and pickup any loose items so it does not land up in the bin or cause it to stop due to some blockage.
The app features are really good. As for obstacle avoidance, well I threw a cat toy in front of it and it looked like it was going to suck it up but it just ended up pushing it out of the way. I know there isn't a camera for determining what objects are so I suspect this was more down to the improved roller on it.
Are you using smart home tech to clean your home? Let me know down below what you're using and if you enjoyed the video then don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to the channel 😊
I have had 2 robovacs now, Ecovacs then Roborok, the latter is amazing!

Ugh I just wanted something to work out of the box, not some LINUX bs configuration nonsense.
Who said anything about Linux? If you don't want the kit then you can buy a fully built out of the box ready to go version 🙂
Thank you
Excellent video. I want to know more about SSD drive, If you could explain 2.5 SSD and M.2 SSD. I also interested to know how different type of SSD built and how they works. Thanks
A lot of work gone into this video, great job. Another extension of your leak detectors automation, would be to flash your smart lights, or make your Alexa type devices make sounds when leak is detected. Keep up the good work - Eddie
Thanks Eddie, trying out a few different things to see what everyone is interested in! and yes visual and audible alerts are definitely something to add to the automations for stuff like that

If I already have another device that works as my coordinator (SonOff E for example) and I need to expand my ZigBee network with the SLZB-06, connected via ethernet cable (Connection mode: Ethernet) and working as a Router (Radio mode: ZigBee Router). Is it possible?
I haven't tried it as described but you should be able to as in reality it's no different to any devices on the network that act as a router.
You did wrong tests, please try RANDOM disk operations, and you will see HUGE difference. What you tested, is your Gigabit Interface. Nothing more.
I've replied to comments like this multiple times now as to why it's tested this way and WHY it's not worth it.
like this video it will definitely help the hesitant crowd to dip their feet in to home assitant
