    As a fellow Super Mario Galaxy enjoyer, I have to agree that Galaxy is probably peak 3D Mario. Compared to 2, it's the game I can always go back to and have a blast 100%ing, getting to do it all again as Luigi is a treat to me aswell. I think if I had to rank them as you did, I would place Odyssey in the number 2 spot, raise 64 to number 3, and move Galaxy 2 down to 4. As much as I love Galaxy 2, I'd rather play the first game any day.

    • @Kardino
      @Kardino 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A very fair ranking. I was debating whether to make Odyssey 2 or 3. But I do think I prefer Galaxy 2 to 64 just for the sake of more engaging levels.

    What I really liked about dark moon was its focus on puzzles and the gem and boo collection quests. The original only had the most basic of puzzles like lighting candles with your fire energy and such but dark moon, and especially the Twisted Mansion, sometimes felt like Zelda dungeons. I also really liked how much better the combat worked for me. On the other hand I think the ghosts of the first game were better overall. I was always very annoyed by the ceiling ghosts but the ghosts in dark moon don't feel threatening at all (except for the first time you see the mummy, but even that turns out to just be a greenie). Still, it is not as bad as in the third game (where the ghosts really no longer feel like proper ghosts at all, more like imps or something like that, just look at what they do on the disco floor). I think combining what made both games so good, the controls and puzzles of the sequel and the atmosphere, the ghost and the story design of the original would make a truly great game.

    • @Kardino
      @Kardino 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, combining the benefits of both games would be ideal. I agree 3 was a bit of a letdown in hindsight but I thought it was fine enough.

    Good video, it's a topic I find interesting to think about as life systems are so common, and yet it can be hard to work out whether they're worth using- even Nintendo seems to find it difficult sometimes! I would have appreciated if you explained what you meant with the splatoon example, though, I haven't played that game so I don't know what you were referring to, and even if I had it might have been nice to know why you thought one mode used lives better than the other. Otherwise, I really enjoyed your take on this topic

    Monkey Trumps is based on a card game established in the UK called Top Trumps. What was implemented in Super Monkey Ball Adventure is exactly how the card game is played in real life. It’s quite fun and each pack was thematically different to represent certain well known franchises, such as Star Wars, Doctor Who, The Simpsons, etc. Since Traveller’s Tales is a UK based developer, seeing a British card game as a reference in a franchise made in Japan (and one that I’m heavily fond of) is not only surreal, it’s also quite charming and hits right at home for me, if I’m honest. That said, I don’t know if I can call Monkey Trumps a worthwhile exclusive feature on PSP. I guess it is cool to collect the cards, as they do serve as biographical pieces for each of the monkeys in the game. However, since the mode requires a second console and copy of the game to use them in Top Trumps style, I don’t know if it is worth it at the end of the day. This was my first time actually seeing it in action, and I must say, the way they present each player with messages and a “You Win/Lose” feels very underwhelming by having such static graphics and no fanfares. Nevertheless, preserving undocumented features like this is very much appreciated and will draw more attention and interest from viewers to check these things out. The game as a whole, though, it’s not very good. I think the idea is better than how it was implemented as a functioning title. The challenge mode offers some decent designed levels, but aside from a couple of levels I thought were pretty clever, I don’t think they are as memorable as the ones seen in previous titles. Might just be my personal bias there, as I grew up with the Monkey Ball and the duology on GameCube and Deluxe on Xbox are my favourite games. The party games, meanwhile, I found were pretty good, and the new ones fit well within the catalogue. I mostly played Adventure on GameCube, and I find that version to be the most ideal with it having a smooth enough frame rate and best loading of the three without that crank bullshit on PS2. I have found the GameCube one to be very prone to crashes, which can occur at random or by doing very specific glitches. The debugger message that appears with a crash can actually come across as a jumpscare at times, it’s amazing lol. That said, if we consider the general catalogue of Traveller’s Tales prior to the LEGO titles, I think this has to be one of their weakest to date. Great analysis, btw. I don’t often see in depth reviews of Adventure, and watching one with features that rarely get covered was fascinating.

    • @Kardino

    I played the heck out of BOTW. I adore it from the bottom of my heart. I love the freedom of exploring it gives you, the characters, as well as the abilities. I played the game twice, as well as Hyrule Warriors Calamity Ganon before TOTK. Even though, I loved the sky Island tutorial because it made me feel like I was experiencing BOTW all over again. after playing some more and realizing that the sky Islands, i was so eager to explore, were less expansive than I hoped for, really demoralized me. I could talk all day about my obsession with BOTW (especially with sidon and that he holds himself responsible for mipha's death), but to summarize my point of view: BOTW was like my messiah in Video games, it saved my from a really dark place. But with TOTK essentially giving a similar "freeing" experience it falls short for me because I have no nostalgia attached to it and even more simply: i already got saved. But the final fight in TOTK was so amazing. Especially the beautiful fight against dragon ganondorf reminds me of spirit away.

    • @Kardino
      @Kardino 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m actually kinda surprised they chose to focus so much on the Sky Islands in the marketing. Thinking about it, they probably wouldn’t have been quite so disappointing if it wasn’t the main bullet point on the back of the box. But yeah. I would have preferred one big sky island per region instead of seeing the same island almost copy-pasted several times

    I went the same way with bouncing off BoTW and then putting more time into ToTK. I didn't play much of BoTW on Wii U, but I've put a good chunk of hours into ToTK. I agree with you stating that alot of the disappointment with ToTK hinges on how much BoTW enraptured you when it came out. If someone put dozens of hours into BoTW, then they are more likely to feel like they've already "seen it all"

    Super Mario 64 kicks you out of the stage everytime you get one of the 6 main stars. That may not SOUND too bad, but it has the same fundamental problem that lives can have, in that it makes the game more frustrating because it restricts how often you can attempt a hard challenge, making it way more frustrating than it would be otherwise. Especialy when it comes to the 100 coin stars. Like a lives system, the boot out system may not be the root cause of the problem, but it agravates every other problem in Mario 64. Now, I know what some of you are thinking. "But wait! You only get kicked out AFTER you collect the star, so how can it be the culprit for the frustration of losing progress when you DIE? And also, 100 coin stars are one of the few that DON'T boot you out of the stage, so how can THEY be affected by the boot out system, let alone be affected more than other stars?" And the answer isvbecause without the boot out system, the player naturally gets more attempts at each star, because they can collect more than just 1 or 2 stars per run, making EVERY star less frustrating. Without the boot out system, every run through the stage lets you attempt all 7 stars (outside of stars that require specific conditions when entering), while WITH the boot out system you can only attempt 2 stars per run. So, without the boot out, 6 runs through a stage mean 6 attempts at each star, meaning 6 potential chances of getting them. WITH the boot out system, 6 runs only mean ONE attempt for each star. You can see how that makes the game more frustrating, right? It needlessly makes everything take up to 6 times longer. How this affects the 100 coin star is also a matter of math. For every other star in the stage, you can collect a certain ammount of coins along the way. Without the boot out, if you collect an average of 17 coins in the process of getting each of the other 6 stars, you can get a 100 coin in that run. But WITH the boot, you now need to collect 100 coins all in the process of collecting ONE other star. The boot out system resets you coin counter everytime you get another star, so if you get anywhere from 1 to 99 coins in the process of getting another star, all those coins will be reset and you'll have to collect those coins all over again in order to even ATTEMPT the 100 coin star. Remember, dying fromm enemies or falling means you lose all the progress you made towards that star. 100 coin stars are by far some of the most tense and time consuming stars in the game, and the boot-out system restricts the frequency of attempts you get at these by ALSO reseting your progress whenever you collect any of the other 6 stars, meaning you need a dedicated run to even attempt the 100 coin star while collecting at most only 1 other star instead of 6. I always knew there was something about Mario 64 that made it needlessly frustrating, but I couldn't quite figure out what. I always thought the boot-out system was a questionable design choice, but I never thought it was THAT bad until I stopped to think about how it affects the collecting of stars.

    Would you look at that, another person falling for the negative stigma against Tour tracks all because they hate Tour. Can't enjoy a Tour track as much all because Tour sucks. All you complained about was the graphics, and scaling as if it's really that bad. Blud even criticizes Athens because he can't get used to the alternating laps lmao. You deserve all 14 city tracks man. Bye and no offense lol.

    • @Kardino
      @Kardino 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Graphics and scaling are universal issues but as I mentioned in the video, I think some Tour tracks aren’t too bad at all. It’s stuff like Tokyo and New York that I mostly find boring due to their designs. But even London isn’t too bad. Not sure who Blud is but as someone who plays Tour occasionally, I don’t think they’re all terrible. It’s just that they’re probably the weakest tracks in the DLC.

    Yeah when it’s all laid out like this, the DLC was very hit or miss lol. It’s conflicting because it really dilutes the online play experience, but at the same time there’s a good chunk of new courses that are close to the quality of the base game. I guess it’s worth it to have courses like Maple Treeway or the Rainbow Roads, but sometimes I do miss how pure online used to be 😅

    Here's another idea: Banana Mania should have kept the original challenge mode and just added the "No lives" mode as a new one. The new mode would then be a collectathon or a high-score attack, where the challenge is now getting as many bananas as possible. They could then change the requirement for opening levels to collecting a certain number of bananas, using Banjo-Kazooie style barriers that track the total number of bananas collected in all levels. That would keep the option of a friendly mode while still having an incentive to collect bananas. The game could also track the number of times you die during each run of a stage, and at the end it divides the number of bananas you collected by the number of times you died, rounded up. That way, there is still an incentive to avoid dying and to master each stage so you can colllect the highest number of bananas.

      That’s kind of what they did with Golden Banana mode, minus the lives and I actually liked it a lot! The biggest issue though, is that they had to choose specific stages for it. I feel like you’d have to do something to alter the game’s structure to keep things from getting repetitive or boring. Maybe something like Adventure’s formula, where you gradually unlock an overworld and can choose which levels to play?

      @@Kardino A level select where the player can go back to any level and replay them to get a higher banana score should definitely be included. Along with a save feature. That would truly pull the new mode to a collectathon experience where the player can continue where they left off and progress bit by bit.

    In the case of Super Monkey Ball, maybe they could have unlimited continues with permanent checkpoints after every few levels, and have bananas get stocked as a form of currency that the player can use to buy extra lives if the situation is too tough. Just with a limit of how many lives they can buy at a time to prevent the system from getting abused. That would have made the game friendlier for begginers while still giving them an incentive to collect bananas. It could also still be pretty difficult and have high stakes for dying, while still allowing players to retry from not too further back.

    • @Kardino
      @Kardino 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The question would then be: What is the penalty for using a continue? Wouldn’t setting up checkpoints be redundant if you had infinite continues?

    • @ag2023en
      @ag2023en 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Kardino The penalty for using continues is that they get sent further back, potentially multiple levels, instead of just being sent back a small section. By "Permanent Checkpoints", I'm reffering to the point where the player starts after a game over. As in, a lives systems with unlimited continues basically means that some checkpoints are permanent (usually after completing a world or chapter) and others are temporary (such as those in the middle of the level). So if the player still has lives left they return to the last temporary checkpoint, of which there can be multiple ones in the same level, but if they get a game over they continue from after the last permanent checkpoint, which is further back. Using Sonic 3 and Sonic Mania as examples. Each zone marks a permanent checkpoint, but there are also temporary checkpoints in the middle of each level (those poles with balls at the top). If the player has lives left, they continue from the last temporary checkpoint, but if they get a game over they can only continue from the start of the zone and have to redo 1 or 2 acts all over again. Considering that those are also SEGA games, I'm surprised they didn't just reuse the idea.

    Absolute facts. My favorite example of using the lives system is the Castlevania games. Since each game has like 5 different subweapons each live matters so much more, because if you die, you have to use a different subweapon. I feel like that is implemented perfectly. Whenever I see someone complain about lives I just say “maybe the game is not for you”. And that’s okay

    Prime example of a game being judge based on its predecessor rather than what the new developers set to achieve. While flawed in some ways the game shines with its exploration. The environmental puzzle solving and interaction are leagues above the original game.
