  • The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild was one of the most legendary games of its decade. But when the sequel finally released, many people walked away at least somewhat disappointed. Was this a problem with the game, or an inevitability? Let's Discuss.

I played the heck out of BOTW. I adore it from the bottom of my heart. I love the freedom of exploring it gives you, the characters, as well as the abilities. I played the game twice, as well as Hyrule Warriors Calamity Ganon before TOTK.
Even though, I loved the sky Island tutorial because it made me feel like I was experiencing BOTW all over again. after playing some more and realizing that the sky Islands, i was so eager to explore, were less expansive than I hoped for, really demoralized me.
I could talk all day about my obsession with BOTW (especially with sidon and that he holds himself responsible for mipha's death), but to summarize my point of view:
BOTW was like my messiah in Video games, it saved my from a really dark place. But with TOTK essentially giving a similar "freeing" experience it falls short for me because I have no nostalgia attached to it and even more simply: i already got saved.
But the final fight in TOTK was so amazing. Especially the beautiful fight against dragon ganondorf reminds me of spirit away.

I’m actually kinda surprised they chose to focus so much on the Sky Islands in the marketing. Thinking about it, they probably wouldn’t have been quite so disappointing if it wasn’t the main bullet point on the back of the box. But yeah. I would have preferred one big sky island per region instead of seeing the same island almost copy-pasted several times

I went the same way with bouncing off BoTW and then putting more time into ToTK. I didn't play much of BoTW on Wii U, but I've put a good chunk of hours into ToTK. I agree with you stating that alot of the disappointment with ToTK hinges on how much BoTW enraptured you when it came out. If someone put dozens of hours into BoTW, then they are more likely to feel like they've already "seen it all"

They should have made the sky islands a bigger part of the game. No one wants to explore the same map of the first game again
