  • Made by the same company behind Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic R, and the LEGO game series, Super Monkey Ball Adventure was an attempt to adapt the franchise to a new genre. But did they succeed?
    This video is Chapter 7 of Fall Out: A Super Monkey Ball retrospective. I recommend watching the previous video first for additional context.

    Monkey Trumps is based on a card game established in the UK called Top Trumps. What was implemented in Super Monkey Ball Adventure is exactly how the card game is played in real life. It’s quite fun and each pack was thematically different to represent certain well known franchises, such as Star Wars, Doctor Who, The Simpsons, etc. Since Traveller’s Tales is a UK based developer, seeing a British card game as a reference in a franchise made in Japan (and one that I’m heavily fond of) is not only surreal, it’s also quite charming and hits right at home for me, if I’m honest. That said, I don’t know if I can call Monkey Trumps a worthwhile exclusive feature on PSP. I guess it is cool to collect the cards, as they do serve as biographical pieces for each of the monkeys in the game. However, since the mode requires a second console and copy of the game to use them in Top Trumps style, I don’t know if it is worth it at the end of the day.
    This was my first time actually seeing it in action, and I must say, the way they present each player with messages and a “You Win/Lose” feels very underwhelming by having such static graphics and no fanfares. Nevertheless, preserving undocumented features like this is very much appreciated and will draw more attention and interest from viewers to check these things out.
    The game as a whole, though, it’s not very good. I think the idea is better than how it was implemented as a functioning title. The challenge mode offers some decent designed levels, but aside from a couple of levels I thought were pretty clever, I don’t think they are as memorable as the ones seen in previous titles. Might just be my personal bias there, as I grew up with the Monkey Ball and the duology on GameCube and Deluxe on Xbox are my favourite games. The party games, meanwhile, I found were pretty good, and the new ones fit well within the catalogue. I mostly played Adventure on GameCube, and I find that version to be the most ideal with it having a smooth enough frame rate and best loading of the three without that crank bullshit on PS2. I have found the GameCube one to be very prone to crashes, which can occur at random or by doing very specific glitches. The debugger message that appears with a crash can actually come across as a jumpscare at times, it’s amazing lol. That said, if we consider the general catalogue of Traveller’s Tales prior to the LEGO titles, I think this has to be one of their weakest to date.
    Great analysis, btw. I don’t often see in depth reviews of Adventure, and watching one with features that rarely get covered was fascinating.

      Wow! Thanks for letting me know about the Trumps game. I had no idea! I’m glad you enjoyed the analysis, too!

    The concept of an open world monkey Ball game has potential, such a shame that it was rushed and made by a sidebranch of a studio.

    I love this game, thanks for having a long 40 minutes video on this game that's not talked about enough, for better or worse. That NG+ of Future Aiai in the PSP version sounds amazing

      Haven’t played that one, but TT definitely had a shoddy record

  • @GregCubed
    @GregCubed ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It’s actually really weird they handed it off to TT Oxford specifically, because that division was solely opened to produce Crash Bandicoot games lol. They only got to make two before they were shut down and consolidated and the whole TT brand shifted basically to only making Lego games lol

    Some people might say that buying 2 PSPs was a waste of money, but to those people I will ask how many trump cards of saxSAX they have in their collection. That's right, none. Either way thank you kardino for having me in this video, monkey ball adventure is pretty wild so it was fun looking into just how dumb the development of game was.

    I heard about this game the other day and got curious about it. Thanks for covering it in such detail! It's always interesting to learn about quirky, obscure games like this. I particularly appreciate that you seem to have given the game a very fair chance rather than just dismissing the whole thing due to its jankyness, and even researched why it turned out like this. Oh, and nice job with the avatars you used to represent yourselves in the video, I think you use them quite tastefully

    You're telling me that SEGA released a broken unfinished game because they rushed it out the door in 2006? Why does that sounds familiar?

    I don't know if you're still planning on reviewing it, but I'm very nervous for your review of Banana Blitz. It's one of my favourite video games and the game that got me into Super Monkey Ball, and it really bothers me how negatively a lot of people in the community view it...

    I will not take this cannon slander that party game is the shit when playing with others. Also i feel like the devs knew that the party games were the best part since there’s a cheat code built into the game that unlocks everything

    Your OC-insert is not interesting or fitting. Wonderful video but hold off on the rantsona until you get a large fanbase, I'd say - your content should be what draws people, not some cartoon with a few poses.
