I'm a middle aged, middle class white person (privileged) who often crochets People of Color dolls. I think Black dolls from Black creators are ideal. We need more inclusion & representation of both. Please. I use patterns & books to recreate dolls made by POC. But...I also create my own dolls from scratch. As a kid, I was bothered that my cousins & I played w dolls that didnt look like the kids in our mixed race family. Now that I make dolls it only makes sense to me to make what I would have wanted. I dont know that acknowledging my privilege is enough but I'm trying. I see Jess trying so hard to be respectful & I appreciate her willingness to talk abt an uncomfortable topic.

Where do you recommend to buy reborns

I just wanted to say I'm not black but I am mixed race and I get where a lot of peoples anxieties and frustrations with how racially they get represented come from. I appreciate you not taking this frustration personally and continuing to work, grow, learn and take advise where a lot of people would have given up entirely. This doll was a learning experience ans only going to help improve your next black doll. :)

Looks good. I think undertones are the problem now. For the hands try a layer of yellow first. No artist just a black woman staring at her hands.

My daughter is mixed sweetheart ,I've been told white pepole shouldn't be having black babies, hahaha Ignore the haters in life, they have nothing better to do then spread racism and hate . Paint what you want! If you had followed their comment and only painted white then they probably would have commented to say that you weren't being inclusive enough. You couldn't win with the trolls either way. xx

Love the amount of work you have put into this and cant wait to see you do more. Not sure the paints you use but citadel paints i use on my minis and they have dry brush paints that could go on darker paints its great for highlights.

Love how the feet are turning out! I know you mentioned how much you were worried you wouldn’t be able to lighten the soles and stuff. You’re doing great!

Think your doing a good job! But for the next black baby keep in mind there are so many colors, undertones and overtones of brown skin, they are usually not one shade of brown which is what the baby appears like to me. Good luck 😊

Paint what you want

Make the lips lighter the front of the face should be lighter with darker shades towards the forehead and lower neck etc . The tips of the ears are usually darker than the rest of the ears as well as under the finger tips. The knees can be a little darker as well as elbows.

Not offended by your term of ethnic you could just black that’s what we darker skinned people often check on paper work 🤷🏾‍♀️ love the work ❤

The finger tips and tips of ears on darker babies are darker than the rest of the body or limb at first and same with the face being lighter than the actual top of the head or neck. Also knuckles would be darker as well as sometimes the knees and elbows slightly not exaggerated. Also if you wanted to do birth marks some darker babies have lighter skinned birth marks and some have darker skinned birth marks than their skin tone. Are you using genesis paints ?

As a black reborn collector I am happy to see a black reborn because lots of other reborn creators don’t make black reborn dolls

Your baby looks great thus far! Something to consider when trying to darken then skin is doing so from the root being the material they are made of. Adding a light dye to the silicone could help yield a darker complexion. You don’t want to go too dark though because as many have said, Africans and African American people are often born with a lighter complexion that doesn’t darken until exposed to the sun. I am mixed Nigerian, Congolese, Portuguese Irish and a lot of other things so I was pretty pale when I was born according to the images taken at my birth. Great job with your art!

Dont listen to the negative only the constructive

I like the contrast on the hands/feet put some yellow in there it might help The hair is a nice touch
