Yep. Had this! Unfortunately, it was gifted with biblical stories! But also Star Trek ones!
I love how this thing hit the market essentially as a working prototype. That instruction sticker feels like such a last-minute detail.
You left out an important safety consideration, which is that if you jostle the base of the thing at any time, the cover pops open and two heavy D batteries drop right in your lap (or on your foot).
I just found this model E at an estate sale. It works just fine. However, it’s quite dirty inside. How do i open it up and clean it without damaging it?
Well This was a "Blast From the Past" :) I too grew up in the late 50's / early 60's. Thought View-Master were cool Have been searching for a Model E _WITH Box !. The boxes are so rare. Model E reminds me of the Ladies Horn rim Eyeglass with Rhinestones.. ha Maybe we need to Bedazzle our view-masters :) Hey, Quirky is Chic.
You have the first incarnation. Purely mechanical player with a diaphragm as speaker connected to the stylus. The next version was the blue one - with an amplifier and crystal stylus and backlight. Sound was better and the pressure of the stylus on the disc much lower - so it didn't wear out after 50 or so plays....
I have one of these, just wondering is there a way to disassemble them or add some lube to the spring?...Mine is super loud and I'd love to quiet it down some.
Thank you for this video. I’ve just started collecting view masters so found this information really helpful. I have a model G which has red lettering on the back (the word “viewmaster” is written in red instead of white like yours). Do you know anything about where or why this variation was made? Thank you!
Are there any other version of the lighted ones???
Can you get the plug that is at the bottom of the GAF as I have one but it is missing
Just picked up a model D, same one with the V top. Is there anyway to open it for cleaning? Seems to have dust on the inside of the lenses.
The big drawback to the D, dust between the two lens sets. Unless you want to screw-up the whole viewer, have it cleaned by a pro, like Dr-T. I have 2 Ds and 4 Fs.
Yeah, it was tricky, but I was able to get it open, cleaned up AND put back together correctly. I was lucky though in that I ran across a broken D that I was able to practice on.
Hi all, i have the A-Team viewmaster set from the 80s. But one slide is bad. Its not damaged, but probably a production error. Anyone out there with the same problem? If so, it could be that particular slide.
Most excellent review! After all these decades, I just got back into them. So glad to have found your channel.
I have been given a Model C just like my sister and I had back in the 60’s. A nice piece of history! Unfortunately it does not index well both stiff and sometimes does not rotate disk fully. Yes I could drill out the rivets but this would be a shame. Anyone know how to fix this indexing without a full disassembly - am I am fairly good with tools?
I always wished they'd make a lighted viewmaster with little people or at least pictures of people in theater seats inside and possibly an emergency exit sign over a little door in the back, so it looks like a real movie theater inside, like a little diorama.
I have the beige/tan one, but I cannot hear any sound. The record goes around and the needle mechanism appears to make contact, but all I hear is the reel going around. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. Trish
That is cool. I have this horizontal View-master that is made in China. No idea what model # that one is. Believe it is from the 2000's.
I have a Model C that I got from my mother as she used it when she was a kid. I picked up a Model B, but I cannot remember where I got it from. Might have been from a relative. It is cool and smaller than the Model C.
I always wanted one as a kid. We had the regular red & white "G" Viewmasters though and lots of reels. I looked it up in an old Eatons catalogue and it was $16.99 Cdn in 1973, whereas the regular GAF Viewmaster was $4.99 Cdn. I seem to recall that our parents budgeted $20.00 Cdn for each child at Christmas, so that is probably why. It is hard to believe, but even with a $20.00 budget we always seemed to get a decent amount of cool toys for Christmas in those days. In the province I lived in there was a 8% sales tax added too. The technology reminds me of a talking Bugs Bunny toy that my brother had. I think it used a similar technology. It had a pull cord and it randomly played back various voice clips (like "What's up Doc") from some sort of record disk of about the same quality.
I had one and it truly was legit!
‘Viewmasters of the Universe’ ha ha ha ha ha ha, I like it!
Hello,I started my View Master reels collection back in 1971 And I still have them and take that !!
Hello, is there a way to open the model e? The plastic lens/shield is bent on mine. Ty
PLEASE HELP. Need confirmation from the expert. I recently purchased a new Batman 1966 reel set. Took me back to my childhood. Now I would like to purchase an original viewmaster. Because I was so young, I can't remember if it was the beige or red one. I want to lean towards the beige one. I know it was the Model G. What year were these two colors available? It would have to been between 1968 to 1972.
Hi Shaun Loved your presentation. Question - how do you eject the discs please Thanks Charlotte
I got one of these for Christmas. I guess anyone who ever had one got it for Christmas. I had the set of highlights of Apollo 11. I thought it was pretty cool until the batteries ran out and then it was consigned to the closet and never used again. One day it suddenly wasn't there anymore. I guess Mom disposed of it.
As someone who owned one of these in the 1970s, I can confirm that they were available BEFORE 1976 (Bicentennial). I purchased mine within a Disney gift set (Theater in the Round, pink cannister with viewer, projector, etc.) in 1973 as a part of Disney's 50 Happy Years celebration. So no, they were not made just for the Bicentennial.
I need help restoring one for a friend. he just bought his first house from his grand parents while in the basement during removing the trash we found. He immediately gave it to me. Now I want to clean it up properly and give it back as house warming present for his man cave.
I've got one of these, still works, it's amazing 😊😊
Hes cute
Hello, we saw your video, liked it and subscribed to your channel. We are also fascinated by the 3D-VIEW-MASTER and Stereography and we read the old View-Master Booklets on our channel to the reels...
I am a child of the 50’s and still have model c and box from the 50’s. I don’t have the insert unfortunately. And coincidently I picked up a model e in a antique mall. It was $20 and at checkout the said it was half off. Great part time hobby. I love looking at the reels every once and a while. Probably have 200 reels. Don’t need them all. I Enjoy the channel.
Why are you looking to your right?
I loved this when I had it
Yes i have the marvel tin cylinder version. The sound is not great but the visuals are second to none one of my favorite toys from the early 80's
Hi Seann. I just got a Viewmaster Sawyer Junior Projector with a broken light bulb. I found out that it is hard to get and very expensive. Are there alternatives? What kind of bajonet fitting is it? Can you disassemble the viewer and change the fitting to something more common? Maybe a tip for a new video.....
Just got a talking viewmaster in mint condition. I never had one with sound but I do like the way the photos look in this viewer. Photos looks big and really nice. The ones I have are on there way out.
Anyone know how to fix one. I tried to show my kids how it worked but it didn't work. They were actually disappointed.
1:33 is not funny and I won’t subscribe you
interesting ith had a flat magnifying lens in fron, wondering if this was due to light having to pass through the transparent record attactched to the reel.
This was probably the most intelligent device of its time.
Collecting the FTs at the moment - the dioramas are a work of art, for sure. Enjoy vids on Vm stuff - not too many around! Cheers GAF era from 66/67 - magenta issue from around 1976/7 through to about 81/2
"For something that is so old, it is a joy to behold" should definitely be on a 50th anniversary card. Excellent details including the dates & history. I don't think I have any old fairy tale reels, but now will be keeping an eye out! Well, since it's a 3-D viewer, better make that two eyes.
Hey! Hope you upload some new content 😊
I remember this
I Really appreciated your presentation. I was a child of the late 60's and early 70's and also had this viewmaster. Sad to say I no longer have it. But I recently found the talking viewmaster reels for the 1969 Apollo Moon Landing. They are in great shape and have been stored in the original packaging. Would anyone like to have them? Please let me know. I would be happy to send them out.
I would like to inquire about your reels
I just ordered one on eBay. Can’t wait to use it with my peanuts reels. Awesome channel.
wow. Wow. WOW! Don't know what possessed me to do a search for GAF Veiwmaster but I'm so glad I did. This is beyond incredible. To see these reels of my youth presented in this way, with narration. I don't know how you did this but I'm glad you did! Can't say thank you enough.
Awesome.
Thanks for these videos. Very informative. Just one thing - Bakelite is pronounced more like "bakerlite". 3 syllables. 👍
No, it's actually pronounced "bake-a-lite".
@@stuboyer1901 how is that different to the way I suggested?
Hello. I enjoyed your videos and hope you come back and do some more at some point. I see that they’re all from 5 years ago. I wanted to interject a correction to what you said in this video about the Model D. Basically you dismissed it as a sort of “Model C for people with bad vision who need a focusing mechanism”. This isn’t accurate. The Model D was the Cadillac of all View-Masters. It is the most coveted model, among serious collectors and enthusiasts, and for good reason. Not only did it allow you to adjust the focus, but it also had a light, and better lenses which provided the largest image of the various models. Perhaps by now you’ve obtained one for yourself, but if you haven’t yet, I highly suggest you do. They aren’t easy to find in good condition at a low price though.
I HAVE ABOUT 500 DISCS AT HOME
