You can see the tracks of the Don Branch just to the west of the DVP. At least the tracks haven't been ripped up . . .
They're mostly still there, though I believe there's at least one small section where they were removed (for construction of a park trail underpass) and not put back. I briefly mentioned that line in my video about the Lower Don River.
Steve: Have you explored the Don Branch rail line connecting downtown (Union Station) to Leaside, and adjacent to the Brick Works? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the line will be revived for a Peterborough/Ottawa route.
I took that train a few years ago and made a video from the dome car of the approach to Toronto through the Don Valley. Great stuff! Too bad this train had a car attached behind the rear Park car. It would eliminate the view to the rear.
Yeah - that was during the time when the government had safety concerns about these old cars and required empty cars (to act as crumple zones in a crash) until testing showed that the cars were indeed safe.
Sadly, we lost the streetcars on Mt. Pleasant in '76 when they rebuilt the bridge over the cemetery.
I remember the unused tracks beside Elte Carpets - there was quite a grade. It would be great if they could build a bridge over the Allen to connect the two sections.
Thx but im a courier i know how messed up dundas st is turns and twists everywhere
It would seem to me that Bailey Bridges were temporary fixes -- amazing they have lasted so long.
40 years ago, when I first started truck driving, I crossed this bridge in a 5 ton straight truck. My truck almost stalled on the bridge, and I thought for sure I was going to collapse the bridge. I'm glad I did not. Love that bridge and never forgot that memory.
Nice one! Thoroughly enjoyed.
get this man on TVO
I heard the bar and restaurant (the owner really) Shox in the junction was pivotal in it becoming wet, not sure how true that is
Shoulda just built a subway. It would be compatible with the rest of the network, would carry more passengers, would go faster, would provide relief on other east west routes, etc. It’s better in every way, except would cost more to build initially. But seriously, Toronto is the largest city in Canada and growing fast. The city just built an out of touch system that will cost us more in the long run, since we’ll need to build a subway on a similar route eventually anyway.
Nicely presented! New subscriber.
Thanks!
My dad used to take the family to Queen's Park on Canada Day for 5 cent hot dogs in the 70s 🌭
Fabulous video Steve. Another interesting fact about Queens Park (north) is that it has the largest concentration of ancient oak trees in Toronto, the second largest grouping is on the UofT grounds nearby.
A perfectly cromulent video.
Actual lol at "we just had a habit of putting guys named John Macdonald in charge of stuff".
I was 7 years old at the time, all I can remember was hanging onto a lamp post, I sure know today God dispatched an angel to hold me to that post or I would have been sweated away, thank you Jesus!
Opening shot... already have the urge to put on Rush's "Moving Pictures" (cover image shot in front of the Legislative building!)
Another good one. Fun fact, the gardens around the pink palace each spring are decorated with fresh bulbs that have been continuously sent to QP since WW2 as a thank you for the Canadian liberation of The Netherlands. Unbelievably... when tulip season is done, the staff dig up the bulbs and literally throw them out. But if you're there on the day of digging, you can fill as many bags as you like for your own garden, free of charge. I used to work at Whitney Block across the street and benefitted from this each spring. On Whitney block, it might be worth a video because of the tower that hasn't been used since the early 1960s (as office space) but has been used continually to test elevator cables to the point of snapping, to this day.
Fun fact; it's still a mental facility.
Yeah, I made that joke in my previous video about universities 😄
You're right! I worked there, it drove me nuts!
I tend to think I know a lot about this city, but I still always learn so much from your videos. Keep up the amazing work.
I've always wondered why everyone always made such a big deal over the "A." In John A. McDonald
A most cromulant episode!
Excellent and fascinating info, thanks! The part about the John McDonald's is hilarious!..😂
Looks like you were there at Ryding Park (I know they changed the name to Runnymede Park but much like Skydome and the ACC, I'll keep calling it by the original name. I grew up on Runnymede south of St. Johns) during the Imnarja aka Maltafest festival Steve. I was there too but later in the day. Perfect weather for it. ❤
I always wondered why the houses on Dundas east of Bolton seemed like they were facing backwards or the wrong way. Very interesting and informative. ❤
yeah...i'm not gonna let you blame Michelle or Norma. so you're just gonna have to accept a like and this crummy comment
I loved the surviving station art in the TTC when I lived there. Hopefully Arc-en-Ciel will be reinstalled in my lifetime.
Do a video about highway 69, old vs current
TTC builds new subway entrance, then closes old one to make it accessible, instead of building accessible new entrance in the first place... oye
Yada yada yada…😅
Gotta say something different for each previous video I mention, y'know 😁
As they say, verity is the space of life. ;-) Keep up the fine educational work Steve!
Another amazing video Steve!
Nice you shot this before the cold rolled in. Also jacket suits you
Thanks for the history lesson, Steve,
What a welcome distraction from all the chaos! Great timing always look forward to your new videos.
Hey Steve, Happy New Year from Michelle and Norma of REAL TALK. We just wanna say that we don’t remember suggesting this topic for a show but we’re so happy we did because it was ultra-interesting, informative and totally cool. Thanks also for the shoutout … we hope to, one day, have as many subscribers as you! 😊
I don’t think anyone will be blaming us as this video was fantastic! So much information I would never have learned anywhere else. Thanks for the intel and the shout out! 👍
Of course like all students, we would race along the moving walkway, knowing we would be "shot" off at the end. :-)
Can Ford fit through the doors?
What transit projects in Toronto have issues? They don't have any issue at all! The Eglinton LRT opening in 2020 like planned and transit is great! No massive, and delusion delays and refusals to acknowledge issues.
Multiverse Toronto maybe.
Keele/Bloor the TTC subway cars are open and the residents of 1700 Bloor St.W. are exposed to such a noise; they cannot change it as they agreed to the construction of the retirement home ....interesting; I see the futuristic expansion of Kipling Subway toward Mississauga also. Thank you Mr Steve.
Thank you Steve for all the info and history lessons we torontonians need to know to appreciate where we live.
This video is crazy if you go to the Munk school and you literally see this building outside your windows for classes every day
Sup Steve! 😎
My interpretation is that Streetcars are twentieth century short rail cars, usually one car, maybe two hooked together. Tram would be a modern 21st century version of those, and frequently have several cars hooked together, they look slicker like sport cars. LRT would include all passenger rail except Heavy Rail Subway Systems, and importantly, LRT would be inclusive of passenger rail that passengers see as subway systems or metro systems (heavy rail)
Awesome where did it start stop?
CPKC runs multiple trains but very roughly they start down east and head west across Canada and the U.S.
Smooth video thanks 🎉
I promised I would donate any income this video earned until Christmas to a local food bank. It made $6.58, so I rounded it up to $10 and donated it to the North York Harvest Food Bank. Thank you for your support!
Hi Steve, it was nice running into you today in Don Mills! I grew up in Don Mills but now live in Cleveland. Your channel provides welcome link to my old turf. We are here visiting my family, my mother still lives in Don Mills, near the Shops. Which as I'm sure you know is the third or fourth incarnation of that shopping center. I remember when there was a bowling alley there. Edited to add - today = Dec 27, 2024
Thanks for being a fan! It's always a pleasant surprise to run into someone who enjoys my videos.
