Hi, my name is Brandon.
I've installed approximately 175 miles of vinyl siding (if you put all the pieces end to end... What?!). I have around 12 years of exclusive work with vinyl siding and have vinyl sided somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 houses. I’m here to share all my knowledge and every trick and tip I've learned throughout the years. I hope to save you time on your project and save you from making some common mistakes as well.
Overall I hope to help you have a more pleasant experience with your vinyl siding project and that I can teach you to install it just like a professional (and maybe help some professionals as well). Good luck and thanks for checking out my channel!

Here I show a method to make a secondary face for J-Channel. The benefit is that it allows you to keep your vinyl siding continuous over top of the block and underneath the block. There’s quite a few times when this tip might come in handy. For one example: when replacing J Channel you might need need to take off the vinyl siding.

Great Job Gentlemen !
Thanks!
I have aluminum siding and have to replace with vinyl siding. Any idea?
I don’t have much experience with aluminum siding. It is still being manufactured though. I’ve seen people unclip it similarly to the way vinyl can be unclipped. It may be possible to treat it like vinyl or it may be a case where it has to be taken down all the way from the top.
Finally someone who understands where the water will get behind the siding 100% of the time!
Water can do pretty amazing things!
couldn't you have just flipped the corner over and put the end that wasn't square at the top, where you wouldn't see it?
If I put the out of square side up it would mostly create uneven gaps between the soffit and the corner post.
Is this for all corners?
In this video I do use that method on all corners: How to install J-Channel around an opening th-cam.com/video/vsPlNPjci8A/w-d-xo.html
*YOU, Good Buddy, did a SUPER JOB on this video since I just bought one of these doors and cringed to see INSTRUCTIONS along with the I HAVE TO PUT THE THING TOGETHER* They forgot to add the line *SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED* ! So let's look at this! *A WIN WIN for the manufacturer in less employees needed to do the jobs, no more LEFT or RIGHT door mounting (just reverse it), no returning item to the store cuz something YOU DID don't fit right and of course charge more for the door* . I think ANDERSON should include your video with the doors they sell us! Thank you buddy!
Hey thanks for your compliments! And yeah, it can be kind of intimidating when you open the box and realize the assembly that is needed.
That was very good cuz it was *REAL WORLD - CANDID* ! Thanks!
No problem! Trying to keep it somewhat real. 🤙🏼
You gonna put siding on a car??? *COOL* !!!
Oh, no, I guess I wasn’t clear about that. I was saying identifying siding is like identifying a car. 🚗 Brand, style, line, color, etc..
If u missed a nail and took it out and inserted it into another spot, don’t u need to put tape to keep it waterproof? Also all the old nail holes?
It would be a good idea to tape the nail holes… especially if there’s an area for water to enter behind the siding from above! 👍🏼
Have a loose piece on garage. Was sagging and came loose. Was not done right. Question: Where do you get the tool to lock it together?
Malco siding removal zip tool amzn.to/3COkLrw Available on Amazon through that affiliate link. Also most lumber stores will have something similar… I’ve tried a couple brands and like the Malco one the best so far.
Thanks great video. Real Professional.
You’re welcome! 😊
You lapped the j the wrong way. I will try your technique! Thanks
Depends on your point of view . Under the eaves there’s not much of a chance of water immersion, and even so vinyl isn’t water tight. One benefit of lapping it upwards is that the joint is harder to see from the ground. 😊 Oh and good luck! Hope it turns out great! 👍🏼
Is there any way for a homeowner diyer to do this without a siding break?
Hi FixItWithMe, if you build your fascias out of wood or PVC then you could probably get by without a metal brake. But if your fascias are wrapped with aluminum there’s no way out of borrowing, renting or buying a brake.
HEY - *I LIKE THAT* Just found, liked & SUBSCRIBED! (Everyone should - IT'S FREE!!!
Hey welcome aboard! 🛳️
great video but those straight seams bothers me lol
You’re not the only one they bother. 🙃 😊
I just discovered ur channel and now I’m obsessed about learning about siding!!! Thanks for all the details, tips/tricks and showing us the failures as well so we know what problems we can face when tackling a repair! I find the hardest part is finding a supplier that will order the precise siding to a homeowner. I am going to try beacon or ABC supply this week to see if I can have certainteed 4” and 4.5” double dutchlap herringbone woodgrain vinyl siding! (Thanks to ur identifying video I was able to confirm what exactly I need!!). There’s no online retailer that we can purchase and have it delivered?
You’re welcome! I’m happy you are finding it useful 😊. I’m not sure if there’s online retailers that sell to the public, but there may be… if a big distributor wouldn’t sell to you I’d probably wait in the parking lot and flag down the first contractor lol. It would be helpful to cross check prices at Home Depot that way you know you’re not way overpaying.
Doesn’t water drain along the cut on the back?
There’s counter flashing underneath the j-channel to wick out water… the j channel isn’t meant to be watertight. Some people even drill holes in the bottom for water to escape. I don’t think that that is necessary though.
It really help a lot
Awesome! 😎
I agree build it to last not just to sell it🇺🇲👍
Absolutely! 👍🏼
nice work!!
Thanks! 😊
Now I see this lol.
Just like a blister… I like to show up when the work’s done. 😉
Nice looking job. That's the same way I'm doing the metal j channel on my house. Using metal siding. Down side with the metal is that it's not very flexable when I'm trying to get the sheets in place behind it.
Thanks! Metal siding definitely seems like it could be challenging… I’m guessing the main thing is that it’s not very flexible so you probably need to make absolutely sure that your clearances are correct otherwise you’ll never get them to clip in.
Thanks for the long version video!!!
You are welcome!
What if my double four white vinyl siding is 22 years old and doesn't have any markings Will I find a piece that will still lock into the existing vinyl siding
Hi, Pretty much everything fades in the sun, so getting siding that matches could be a challenge and you probably won’t get a perfect match color and sheen wise… a double 4” is a common panel and you should be able to lock almost any brand of siding into your existing siding panels. Here is a video I did on how to identify your vinyl siding: How to identify vinyl siding th-cam.com/video/AEBbEtDbSpg/w-d-xo.html
Is that horizontal? Isn't that creating a trough for collecting water?
It will collect water until it runs out of the ends or spills over the face of the j-channel… the nail slots on the back are higher up than the face of the j-channel.
Why don’t you just use the plate with the J built right into it? None of this messing around. Too much overlapping on such a small piece makes it look too busy.
These are the materials I was provided with. Usually I use a dryer vent with a removable j-channel.
Tips that might help a successful and healthy installation (IMHO): 1). Don't wear expensive Apple Watch/chains/jewelry when working. 2). Use shims and a level to get more accurate spacing. 3). Don't throw instructions away prematurely because at some point, you might need it considering we don't think like the mfg/door designer. 4). Don't put heavy objects on glass. One never knows about the weight and stress and just one mistake can cost dozens of dollars. 5). Predrilling helps the wood from splitting/running. 6). It wouldn't hurt to use a small piece of the box cut and placed into door to keep it firmly in place when doing adjustments until the handle is placed within door. 7. Don't be shy in calling Anderson/Emco's "800" number if parts are short/missing/ruined. They'll send out to you without charge including the twisted rubber sweep which lets light and insects into the home. 8). When you throw parts, etc. to the group, place them away from the work area. Cement tends to hurt when contacting it and people just doesn't seem to bounce very well. 9). Installers shouldn't' take off too much pass the point of exactness to the edge and to flooring/cement threshold. IMHO, I've found that daylight passes through them and insects especially like it for passing through to inside. 10. Put on bottom hardware prior to adjusting/installing the floor sweep for more accuracy. 11. Use a pencil mark on the sides of the metal sweep from inside so when drilling, the exactness of the sweep and rubber sweep is there. 12). I've found that a small tap with awl/ice-pick dimple helps keep the drill bit from "riding" and going off course. 13. Use of a Phillips screwdriver for some sensitive drilling or reduce the torque on drills that have lots of power to strip the screw hole. 14). I place the hydraulic closer at the top to keep something from getting caught into it at the bottom (including pets and children's hands) and tends to be aesthetically, unsightly and displeasing. Lower mounting tends to get more "kick dust", etc. to cause the closer to fail at some point, including oil and water spills. 15). Cut and measure twice because we all make mistakes and being correct is much more pleasurable than errors. 16. Other than that, you did a decent installation. :-)
Those are ALL very helpful tips! Funny enough I broke the glass on my watch the first day I worked with it on. The main thing I should’ve done with this install is utilize the top “rain deflector” piece and hold the door jambs down closer to the threshold (#9 on your list)… I don’t like how the top trim wouldn’t be screwed in the middle though 🤷🏼♂️. I like the jamb extensions that can be added and slid down to contact the threshold better, they are available on Amazon. Thanks for your constructive input!
I've installed about 3 of them including Ideal Pet Doors into them. However, I'm not an expert but I do use quite a bit of common sense to make the job and health (including an expensive Apple Watch a bit easier. <smile>...Best to you for providing it for many. (Someday, I'll get a Go Pro and do some videos myself.
This is the best channel for doing siding, which is what I am doing on my house. :)
Thanks for your comment! 😎
Starter strip 1 inch down from top of foundation. How wide is your starter strip. Mine is 2 1/2 " . Is your wider ? If yours is 2 1/2" as well how can the sidding be 1 inch below ? Even with the corner posts. You chalked a line at 2 1/2"
The bottom of the starter is 1” down from top of foundation. I hung the corner down 1” from top of foundation and then measured up from the bottom of the corner 2 1/2” or whatever it was to the top of where the starter was going to be… technically the bottom of the starter is probably 7/8” down from the top of the foundation because I always make sure the siding doesn’t hang below the corner.
Hey man!! Thank you for this video I rocked the j channel on the job we're doing!! Cut my time way down big time!! Thank you so much!! The customer was very very please as the corners were tight and tidy.
That’s awesome! Glad to hear it! 😎
Guessing you zipped that course out before you started the video since the 3 panels you pulled off and put back in were installed exactly where they were in the first place. I can see the indented horizontal lines in the underlayment. 40 year siding guy here. But, the technique is right and bummer you got wet. Good demo.
You are exactly right on man! I noticed they let the siding sag in the clips so unzipped a few pieces and put em up tight to make the clip miss on that course… it’s a common problem so I figured I’d recreate it for the sake of demonstration. Thanks for your compliment!
Great video and demonstration! Depending on what the average homeowner is fixing, either method looks like it would do the trick! I'll be attacking a piece of siding up near a dormer window this afternoon. Not sure what's going on up there yet but this video will no-doubt be helpful! Thanks!
Hey thanks and good luck!
Not impressed
I’ll get better at filmography. For now this is how I have to do it. I’m learning and growing as I go.
This is exactly the video I was looking for. Unfortunately, this is going to break my brain when I actually try to do it. Thankfully it's just a small section so I don't care if I waste a couple feet of J channel trying to get it right. Thanks!
Glad to help! Good luck! 😊
Yep, I was doing siding last night and I think I wasted as much as I used😂
Do you have a video that showes all your tools ? Including staple guns and staple size . Im only doing a 10 x 18 ft. Lean to. But would rather spend my money on tools than labor. At least i have something i can use on other projects.
Hi, I have a video where I talk about all my tools here: th-cam.com/video/56usQKefShc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=htAjzsbUAh-iyogY The Paslode staple gun is the SCS200 and you would have to buy a vinyl siding nose (part number 219502) separately. It takes a 1/2 crown staple (it is recommended to fasten to studs and penetrate at least 1 1/4” into the substrate) There’s a couple alternatives now. Milwaukee is coming out with a battery powered roofing gun that has a quick change vinyl siding adapter. ‘The Siding Guy’ on instagram uses a dewalt battery roofing gun and sells an adapter that he makes himself.
@@sidingschool Thanks for the quick responce ! Really wasn't expecting any response.
@@Mygames627 No problem! I try my best to respond to everyone.
Im sidding a lean to . Which the roof is straight across the garage wall. Do I put the J chanel on top of the finish flashing ? Dont know how else to do it . I may not be using J chanel but what you called undersill . Dutch lap sidding about a 3 inch piece to conect to the existing garage siding.
I would try to get the siding underneath the drip edge if at all possible. So it can shed water. If that means extending the roof, then that is the right thing to do. A ‘double undersill’ piece might be helpful with dutchlap siding. If you can’t get the siding under the drip edge, you could caulk the top, but there’s a chance that water will find a way in.
I found out you use starter strip as J channel sits outside the sidding . Create a gutter situation so the roof being stright across the wall the water would just sit their. Not easy to do with existing sidding . The zip tool is about useless as the sidding edge is only 3 inches from the roof. So I cheated the starter up a little and bent the sidding edge with my hands. Should have took the sidding off all the way to the peak. Much easier !
@@Mygames627 sounds like you figured it out!
You make it look so easy ! Im a DIY guy. I havent seen a install of an inside corner piece . I have a wall with no overhang but has a fasha. Its a lean too. Can I cut the inside corner vertically to make like J chanel to get around the fasha ? Or do I cut it off at the fasha and use J chanel. I think it would look nicer to cut the corner piece to go up the fasha. Hope you understand what im saying.
I’ve definitely cut an inside corner vertically like that, it is a clean look… if the step is too big it might kick the corner out by bumping into the inside of the J-trough. If that happens you’ll probably want to switch to j-channel.
Great video. Thank you for sharing!
No problem! 😊
nice, ineed a zip[ tool i have mice and a chipmunk get into my cellar there is a horiz crack on the sill this house is VERY old so i want to unzip then seal holes BUT do they make a thing metal type flat mesh that i could nail on then pull and secure after?
Sounds like you want to seal a hole in the old substrate or siding underneath… there’s lots of options you could use for that. I’d probably go with a piece of aluminum flashing metal. They sell it in rolls in the roofing section at Home Depot. Then you could tyvek tape it and caulk around it too if you want to be sure to keep them out.
From one person to another you got game. 35 years in the siding. Great job
Hey John, thanks! It’s always nice to hear from another trade professional! 😊
Thanks so much for the informative videos. We're getting ready to install this type of siding but am concerned with how best to deal with the expansion and contraction of the board and batten vinyl. We're seeing nighttime temperatures in the 40s with daytime in the 90s. How would you deal with that? Do we need to let the vinyl warm up by putting it in the sun, for example, before cutting it to length and how much shorter should we cut it to allow for it to grow and shrink?
In a vertical siding installation, most of the expansion is downward. So instead of allowing equal space for expansion at both ends of a vertical panel, leave more space at the lower end: allow for 1/3 of the total expansion at the top of a panel and 2/3 of the total expansion at the bottom. For example, if the total expansion equals 3/4" (3/8" + 3/8"), allow 1/4" at the top and 1/2" at the bottom. If the total expansion equals 1/2" (1/4" + 1/4"), allow 3/16" at the top and 5/16" at the bottom. Spacing Gaps to Accessories 40° F or greater Vertical Siding 3/16" top 3/8" bottom Less than 40 degrees F 1/4" top 1/2" bottom Those are the specs directly from Certainteed. Now the siding can still be cold in the box even if in the sun. But it will warm up pretty quickly once out of the box… all that said, if it is 40 or above then the 3/16” gap at top and 3/8” gap at bottom will be sufficient. And to be honest, not many people are going to be that precise with their cuts. As long as it has enough room to expand you’ll be okay, but you don’t want to cut it so short that it’ll come out of the J-channel when it cools because that won’t look good. I don’t think laying them in the sun is necessary, you can just use the ambient temperature as your guide.
Thank you for the video. Def helped make some vinyl look better, and stay together.
You’re welcome!
Great tip, thanks for sharing
You’re very welcome! 😊
I'm sure a lot of people will appreciate this video. Thanks for sharing 😊

Can you please tell me what type of paint to use for the vinyl siding that doesn’t cause the paint and siding to warp, thank you
Hopefully you tested it on a small area… sorry for your troubles! There is a chance if you’re making the siding a darker color that it is expanding more than before and the sider didn’t leave adequate gaps to allow for that expansion. With that said, any paint that is rated for painting over vinyl siding should work, but there’s no guarantee that you won’t run into the same problem. I would be sure to test in a small area. Here’s a link to the Benjamin Moore page on painting vinyl siding: www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/contractors/job-solutions/professional-how-to-guides/
