All Together Now by Tim Ottinger

People tend to work either as individual contributors, doing “their own” work, in pairs where two people work on assignments together, or in larger ensembles (so-called “mob programming”). But what if a team were to work in a much more fluid way, forming teams, dissolving them, and reconstituting them on-the-fly? What would that mean for the team members, for management, and for the progress of...
Demystifying Product Quality - ShriKant Vashishtha in Conversation with Ashok Singh
มุมมอง 1303 ปีที่แล้ว
What if I say that you may want to *focus on the construction quality of a product at the very end* and not at the very beginning. What if I say, one of the first and foremost criteria towards quality is to reach to the customer as soon as possible, preferably in couple of sprints and validate your assumptions with the end-user, and then keep doing the same as fast as you can for any future dev...

Scrum Patterns - Not Just About Sucking a Little Less by James Coplien
มุมมอง 4.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In some sense, Scrum is simple with only eleven main components, but its rollout and operation are intricately complex. Even with its broad certification base and online standard, it is difficult for people to appreciate its complex subtleties from a 16-page guide and a two-day course. We all assumed that the deviation from good practice was small or innocuous until we started taking stock abou...

Executives hire consultants either to execute some project they dont wanna hire someone for or because they want someone to blame for tough/unpopular decisions

coming from a veteran entrepreneur tuned financial consultant, I couldn't agree more Jobs, a big problem with consultants is they never have to deal with the consequences of their dissensions, thus often don't give value for money.

This opinion is one-sided. This advise is useful to a particular type of people. Remember, an advise even from great people is just that. Nothing more. There are many circumstances where consultancy is beneficial and there are those where it's redundant. Nothing is black and white like Jobs portrayed it.

Experience always prevails over aptitude or potential. Consulting are professional hatchet men that are used as stamps of approval for key decisions made by managers and ceos who already know what has to be done.

Billion dollar global insight for real life, movie, anime, or thesis to feedback to management and max profits. In ancient times, the King who “own” the empire, consult advisors, prime ministers and ministers who don’t “own” the nation. 当局者迷,旁观着清。The first consulting company established by Arthur Dehon Little in 1886. A plethora of consulting companies exist today. If there isn’t a demand, then there wouldn’t exist supply. If Steve Jobs didn’t peep, I mean “consult” from certain labs or Japan, perhaps we don’t have Apple today. If I’m sociopathic and like the boys, I just leech intel off each app and offer nothing (comments) in return. What kinds of values do I have that motivate me to give and get no financial rewards in return? How am I different from others? Memento Mori.

I share these sentiments about consulting firms. You really need to get your hands very dirty before you start consulting. As an experience IT veteran of 30+ years, I've contracting consulting firms many times for very specific aspects of our roadmap. However, I've learnt not to use them for strategy, stakeholder interviews, or continuous improvement. To do these well, I think that you need to understand the ethos and culture of an organization. Without experiencing this firsthand, you have never "tasted" the organization.

Maybe the 3rd dimension of consulting is best practice. Humans can only truly perceive things in 3 dimensions, so if you argue a consultant can’t see the depth of your world - what are you missing in theirs ?

Its like saying consultants are academics? All theory no real world experiences. But the fact is most of the time good consultants do come from a background of working in real functioning companies but no longer want to be in that type of environment anymore, or maybe their are tired of the companies toxic no life balance situation and just wanted to live a life they find fulfilling and not just their to achieve the masters or CEOs goals. so i think this is a little bit of over generalization… those who like apples can eat them, those who do not can eat other fruits but doesn’t mean he never tasted apples just saying 😅

I can't think of any good reason for Jobs to be invited to speak at MIT. He has no education. If Wozniak had picked any random person off the street to be his partner, the results would have been the same. RIP Steve Jobs.

As an engineer who was an employee and now transitioning to a consultant, I really disagree with this. You learn so much more as a consultant, and give so much more value to your clients and the companies that hire/work with you. The experience as a consultant makes you more professional by far. You are invited to tackle the most hard problems, fix the hardest most interesting issues, and you do take ownership for the long term and keep connections with your clients as well. They just will not call you to solve Trivial problems. So you get to work all the time on the biggest interesting projects. There is also no cap to promotion and status... No one will tell me I can't do this or that, because my title is an engineer and not an architect, and I don't mess with politics like that. I give the value to the customer to the extent of my skill, knowledge and talent. I can be he's CTO and chief architect for 2 months essentially without the title, if my skills are to match, there is no inner organisation political barrier. This is probably the worst most wrong advice, I've ever heard. P.S I'm a software engineer, I'm not making PowerPoints slides, I design and create solutions, and implement them.
