The sad part of the “debate” is our social media based journalism. News, sports, whatever the subject, it’s about getting clicks and controversy drives clicks. In sports, another aspect is that people (fans) want to be able to see greatness… to say they witnessed the greatest of all time. There’s a psychological aspect; if you say that the best that anything can be already happened and nothing will ever live up to that again, it makes it less exciting to see now. 99% of the “Lebron is the GOAT” talking heads in the media absolutely know better, but selling the controversy sells their podcast, talk show or whatever platform they have. It drives clicks. Lebron is one of the greatest players to have ever played, a great ambassador of the game who deserves every accolade except GOAT. MJ was such a freak of nature that he embarrassed the entire NBA for a decade + despite the game being played in a different way, far more physical defense, etc. Most of the other great players of that era retired without a championship because of him. It will be a LONG time if ever before we see another player with his combination of breathtaking athleticism, refined skill at everything, dominance at both ends of the floor and maniacal will to win. He was never beaten in the Finals because he refused to lose.
