Awa‘awaloa (Mt Olympus) in FPV The story leading up to this shot is interesting, but the adventure in the way back down is where it gets intense. My friend Ian (@eyesofian) decided to invite me on a hike the day before my birthday at 10pm, and I was all for it as long as I could fly my drone and get some sick shots. So we charged our batteries, got little to no sleep and headed out the next day...

Nikon Z9 Review from a Night-Event Videographer

When I started shooting with Nikon back in 2016, I liked how the colors poped and how things looked. Funny enough, my first Sigma 18-35mm was for an F-Mount, and I’ve kept it ever since 2016! Then in 2019, my Panasonic G7 finally craped out on me and I needed a new camera body ASAP! So I ended up getting the Nikon Z6, not regretting my purchase since. While some things weren’t the greatest, I f...

One of the FIRST Nikon Z9ʻs in Hawaiʻi! Its beefy, itʻs heavy duty, itʻs everything I need a camera to be. Once I felt the weight of this camera, I knew right there that this is going to be the thing that takes me more places than I can think of. I took it out for some lowlight situations, and I have to give the camera a 9/10! Most of the Eye AF couldnt keep up with the fast moving people and t...

So beautiful♥️ Im in tears, love ILLENIUM so much 😭🎵🔥
Hi‘omaika‘i!
Sony has Gamma Assist when shooting LOG. Works quite well. I do love the Z9 though. Internal RAW is ridiculously convenient.
Thanks for this! I'd love to know how you light your studio setup. Care to share?
how do you get rid of the annoying sound of autofocus motor in the lense recorded in the Rode mic with this setup?
So that motor sound is a physical part of the lens. I’m assuming you’re also using an F-Mount lens. That’s the crappy thing about the older Nikon lenses. The new Z lenses don’t have that loud autofocus sound. The only way to not have it at all would be to manual focus the lens by hand or with a follow focusing system. Hopefully that answered your question!
How's it brah, I also shoot with the Nikon Z9! Never knew another Z9 user here on Oahu existed. Came across your channel (shout out to your Z9 Cinema Rig video), and I had to just let you know that you're not alone brah. All these Sony/Canon users, us Nikon brothers gotta stick together hahaha. Love the content fam!
Yessah! I think there’s like 3 other people on Oahu that I know that uses the Z9, and like 2 here in Cali. BUT we stand strong, cuz we know we’re the bessess 😂🙌🏽🤙🏽
I like how the setup looks like a filming stage, from the main camera angle
Thank you! I try to have a lot of my places feel like a stage, I really like the aesthetic!
bro, you cant have the "MOST" cozy setup IF you DO NOT have good CABLEMANAGMENT!!! and not even a fking Mousepad, this poor mouse
Def need to work on cable management. However, it's hard to see the cables once you're sitting at the desk. And I decided to not use a mouse pad since the mouse itself doesn't move, I use that little ball on the side to move it around on the screen. So for me; its very cozy ☺
I love The POV, And The Setup.
Thank you! I actually didn't have enough footage when filming, and I didn't want to setup everything again. So what you saw is usually how my desk is 😂
simpy awesome..can we see the BTS shots of this making video
Are you asking for a video about how I edited this video? If so, I'll see what I can do!
"I put this on to make it look more pro" lol
You already know lol!
Illenium𓅛❤❤❤
Illenium's shows are very special and wonderful. I saw illenium in october in Paris, it was one of the best nights of my life. Hope you had fun <3
Thats awesome to hear! I had an incredible time, and def one that ill remember forever!
cool
Thank you!
How much does all that cost.
Depends on what you’re asking. But I’ll be able to break down all the prices in future videos!
I splurged on the AG01 option. Worth it. TX16S mk2 Max edition. Never going back to Futaba.
Have you updated this rig? I’m very curious to the changes you made. Could you also make an updated list or point me in the right direction
A few slight changes, but things have stayed pretty consistent. I’ll make an updated video soon and update the list!
thanks for the update @@noathecrip
Great setup guide. Has it updated. Seems some of the parts aren’t available anymore. :(
Not much as updated, but I can definitely make an update with you’d like!
If you have time. Trying to piece a rig together for my z9. Some of the parts you use seem to be discontinued. :( again GREAT video and valuable info, thank you!
I would like to set something like this up with my Z9... I'm looking to purchase the MC-N10 remote grip for it. This connects via the ARRI Rosette Mount. Would there be a connector you need between the rig you listed and the remote grip? What are your thoughts, recommendations?
Which Side Handle with rec button can be used with Z9? thanks and keep the good work.
Thank you! And I’m not 100% sure. I don’t use a side handle for my rigs, but I’m sure either Smallrig or Tilta would make one that would work well.
Nikon made a remote grip called MC-N10 Remote Grip. It provides pretty much 100% of the functions that the grip on the camera has but more ergonomic
bring back the babbling
Yes, this is the best FPV backpack!
I have 2 z6 love em... only issue is can't use external monitor when filming at 120 fps
Unfortunately, that’s an issue with the Atomos monitor. You can’t record super slowmo with it. You can only do it internally on the Z6. Im not 100% sure if you can even do it on the Z9 or Z8. Or even if monitors will allow you to do that. You’ll just have to use the camera screen for now.
why you did not continue as a real TH-camR????
2023 was the hardest year for me; mentally, emotionally and physically. BUT I would love to get back to making more videos and just delving into gear! 🙌🏽🔥
i have the FrSky x9lite in white and with the crossfire as my first radio too!!! (Im still a beginer), and was hopping to see if i should upgrade... Was not expecting to find an EXACT video of what i was looking for... xD Thanks!
My biggest problems is to think that it might be too big and or if it is worth because of its price, and because i dont really know what it means to have a better radio xD, i currently only have one drone (Nazgul evoque), with Crossfire so i dont think i would be needing a better radio
Gland you found my video helpful! It is a bit bigger than the X9 Lite, but has a bit more features. I personally went with the TX16S because of its compatibility and it had a bigger module bay than the X9lite. So if I wanted to mess around with other protocols like ELRS or Ghost; I have that option. The TX16S is also very popular, so there’s a good chance that if you have a question about it; someone out there will have a better answer. If you’re perfectly happy with the X9 Lite; I don’t think you’d need to upgrade. But if you’d like to treat yourself; I’d say do it and snag a TX16S!
Do you know if you can fit a 17" laptop in that back pocket
It’ll only fit up to a 15” laptop, unfortunately
Her OF is a scam
thank you SO much for the video. amazing work!
I suffered muscle pain for 2 days after shooting 980 shots from 7am to 7pm with z9. I never suffered like that in my old 7200 Also, how you clamp the usbc cable? Its flimsy and only 3/4 connected
I’d imagine that shooting for 2 days at 12 hours would cramp up your hand, I hope you’ve recovered since! If you’re having trouble with a lose usbc connection, I’d bring it back into Nikon and have it checked out. If not, then there’s a smallrig mini bracket that can hold cables for you. Try look on their website and see which ones would fit your setup. Hope that helps!
@@noathecrip , ive checked both tilta and smallrig and they both dont have a cable clamp designed for their z9 cage. that is why I asked how you clamp the cables in your z9 rig I found a workaround but Ive yet to test it as I am just purchasing it
@@jserenity sounds like a plan! If it does work for you, let me know as I also would like to look into it!
Warning: The Anglebird cards can get stuck in slot 2 so be careful. They also have been known to fail. Not recommended by several users. Google it. Don't want to see you damage your Z9
Do you think that this will fit canon 1dx mark ii and iii setups too?
I believe so! I’d recommend finding a cage that fits the 1DX cameras. Like, an actual fitted cage. I don’t think they’re at stores anymore, so you might have to look up on EBay or something for it. But besides that; I think this setup will work wonderful for your needs!
kondor blue still needs to make a cage
I’d really like for them to make one. But I don’t know if there’s a big enough market to make some. But we can all hope!
@@noathecrip A limited colorway would sell out so fast
Thank you so much for this information. I am a photographer finally making the transition into video and I just got a Z9. I have been looking and learning how to set up a nice rig like this. Extremely helpful! Thank you
Of course! Glad I could be of help! 🔥🙌🏽
Looking at getting one of these, awesome review, have you ever had issues taking it aboard a flight or do you throw it in hold luggage?
Hell yes! I bring my bag as a carry on without issues. All my batteries are also in their own bag, and it’s easy for TSA to open it and see everythibg
@@noathecrip awesome to know man! Think I’m gonna pick one up thanks!
Great setup! 🔥🔥🔥
Edited a sample 8k on resolve today, it looked soooooooo good I was wondering if I was editing Nraw or Braw. With a better dynamic range it would be absolutely perfection
Niiiice! Iʻll have to give it a chance soon. I need to make the switch to DaVinci, but I need to update my hardware first. How did you find the images from both NRaw and BRaw?
@@noathecrip they are very similar in colors. The braw has more dynamic range and options (color space and iso) when you open the raw tab. The absolute best in my opinion is the Red raw. Using those 3 with resolve makes you love color grading
Nice Video only Pr 🫣 Bro DR is for real Filmmaker 😎
lovely movement, colors and sound design!
Thank you, my man! 🙌
Hey man! Thanks for putting out this video. I currently use a D850 and it’s been 6 years since I’ve had it as my main equipment. I am myself a Live music/concert photographer and I’m wanting to upgrade my gear. The Z9 is by default on my list , with the Sony Alpha 1. I am hesitant to make that shift ( considering Nikon feels like home) but I am just not getting the confidence with the video capability of the Z9 , ( when compared to the A1) , can you shed some more of your thoughts on this ? Is it that much of a difference in terms of the production quality coming out of both the cameras ?? Thanks again!
I feel yah on that. One of my really good friends has a A1, and its really nice in lowlight. Sony has a bit more options as far as photo/video settings, but I like Nikon for the look of it. I also have a bunch of Nikon Glass, hence why I went with them over Canon and Sony. I actually wanted an R3, because I always wanted a 1DX2. But I needed a more video centered camera over photos. At the end of the day; itʻs who's behind the camera that will make the image look good. Having the camera knowledge and story telling down will greatly help make ANY camera look good. Iʻd recommend that you write a list of specs you need out of a camera, your budget and if you have any lenses dedicated to particular company. Narrow that down; and you'll find yourself looking at a body that you can save up for. Lmk which body you end up going with as well!
Sorry But 100kg for what???? You Rig Look like 2006 Gimbal Cam Lens and Ready „2022/23“
Not super sure what you mean by this question, this rig can work on a Glidecam, it would just be very heavy to a point where I’d like to have a lighter monitor and have it on the bottom of the stabilizer. Hope that helps 🙌🏽
solid setup, looking foward to what you'll film with it! I got a z9 and It's got me learning more about video (coming from a photography background), would love to see your editing workflow!
Aye, nice nice! The Z9 is fantastic for both of them, the video specs are also insane! I’ll definitely do some kind of workflow in Premier and what not. I’ll probably do something like that with my Easyrig shoot.
@@noathecrip sweet! I'm moving away from premiere and fcp to get into resolve but it'll be cool to see how you do things in premiere regardless! cheers man
@@WassimShomali Same! Loads of people are switching to Da Vinci, so we shall see what we can do 🙌🏽
What was the ideal focus setting
I kept it on the Wide-L settings, and kept it in the center of the frame. Id move it around and what not when I needed to, but that was what I found worked the best! And my focus settings were all as fast as possible.
In low light, did you try the night AF?
Iʻve tried the Starlight view feature a few times for photos. It does help the camera lock focus on a face, but I wasn't used to looking at my exposure settings for proper exposure. So now I just run a Aperture MC light and flash 80% of the time. I don't have Starlight mode in video, so I just have to deal with it as is; which isn't the hardest thing in the world.
Nice video. Really well put together. Your actual work is really good too. Only issue was the pink LED light on the side of your face during the talking head portion. It reminds me of those splat toys they have at the mall. *maybe turn it off, the base colors look fine.
Thank you so much! And I also realized that once I was color grading. My monitor had a different preset than what I usually have, so I didn't realize the harsh colors 😅
It’s cheaper than the Canon or Sony equivalent. 🤷🏻♂️ I only had to wait 6 months for mine… 🤯🤣
It is the “cheapest” pit of the three flagship cameras, but $5500 is still a heafty amount of money. Not every single hobbies will be able to buy it right off the shelf without saving up for it. It isn’t a con about the camera, it’s just a con that it’s expensive 😂 and 6 months isn’t too bad! But I’m glad you got it, I’m stoked to see what you capture with it! 🙌🏽
Hi bro, I also got the Z9 for almost 2 months already and I'm loving it♥♥ I'm also a Freelance Photographer and Filmmaker, and one day I'll also be rigging my Z9 and making it a total beast than what it is now. Let's be friends 💪🎥
Hell yeah dude! Stoked to see more filmmakers taking advantage of this incredible camera! 🙌🏽🔥 hopefully when I have this camera all rigged up, you can take some tips from it and crest your own decked out rig 🔥🙌🏽
@@noathecrip I'll be waiting for the bro🙏 Keep on shooting and rigging🔥📸🎥
What program did you use to edit this video and what frame/rate was your z9 on?
I use Premiere Pro and After Effects to edit my videos. And my FPS varied from 24, 60 and 120! I went with 60fps sometimes due to the lack of ambient light I was getting from the stages. And I tried to not let my ISO go above 3200, because it gets unusable unless I have a demonized plug-in.
I received my Z9 2 weeks ago. Trying to figure out the videos setting and which program its compatible to make color correction. I'm mainly going to use it for high school football videos
@@djtroyh Hmm, I’d recommend the 10-big LOG setting. The 1080p video setting is still really nice, even if you’ll be blowing it up on a projector. Nikon also has a color correcting LUT you can apply in post. I’ll definitely make a video about my personal settings for video and photo soon 🤙🏽
And the gear for your Z9 too, I'm waiting for that video from you!!
@@djtroyh just waiting on a few pieces to come in! Got a pretty cool collaboration with an awesome company 😁🙌🏽
Looks like the Angelbird cards are only 800 write speed. Do you find any issues with that?
I just looked it up, and the website does say 850 wrote speed, so that’s a mistakes on my end. However, I haven’t noticed any issues with the card thus far. I haven’t shot in the 8K RAW video formate yet, so it’ll look like I need to rest that a bit more. I’m still using my 2017 MacBook Pro for editing, so I know my current setup won’t be ideal for texting that kind to footage 😅 but as of right now; I’ve only had one hiccup with a video file while recording. Other than that; it’s fast and effective 🙌🏽
Also question - Just got my Nikon Z9 and it's awesome! I was just wondering if while shooting, do you ever notice very slight lag in the evf or LCD screen while focusing in lowlight? I am on the latest version 2.1. It's not really an issue for me, but I notice in some lowlight occasion I get frame drops "while focusing in 3D tracking" and haven't been able to find anyone who has mentioned this. Let me know your thoughts!
Yeah it happens sometimes in low light. Very rarely but it is does even using 120 fps evf
I agree with what Kavish said; I haven't seen it very often, if not ever. I think before the update, I used to see the EVF drop frames when my shutter button was half-pressed. Now, I rarely see that. 3D tracking at night in a club is utter chaos; lights are strobing, people and hair is all over the place and it gets really dark sometimes. So I tend to stick with the Wide-L AF setting, make the AF fast and keep it in the center of the frame. Iʻd say 90% of the time my shots are in focus. Even if the 10% isn't, im shooting in burst; so I narrow down 1000 pictures to 20-30. If it still happens to you, lmk and well find a solution!
Cost is a negative? Have you priced the competition?
I have priced the cost against other flagship cameras. While it is the cheapest of the flagships, dropping over $5,500 isn’t something a hobbyist might be willing to do. You could buy a canon R5 kit and memory cards Or a SonyA7S3 kit for less than a Z9 body itself, and those kits are incredible. If you’re trying to play it safe, you’d have to make that money back and still have enough to survive on your own. I think it’s a great price for what this camera offers and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Hope that clears up some confusion 🙌🏽
