Climbing a 2.5% Grade with a 55-Year-Old Helper Locomotive Boasting 5082 kW of Pulling Power
The climb from Halden to Tistedalen in Norway has long been known as a challenge, especially for freight trains, with its 2.5% gradient.
Even today, helper locomotives are commonly used for freight trains on this stretch.
On this particular day in 2022, El14 2166, the oldest remaining of these locomotives, was stationed in Sarpsborg for helper duty.
I had the privilege of joining Gjermund, the train driver, who had traveled as a passenger on the train from Oslo, on his workday this afternoon.
Join me for this rare opportunity to experience the journey from inside the locomotive.

Century-Old Signal System Still Running on a Main Line in Norway
Imagine a railway system that has remained virtually unchanged for a century, connecting towns and regions with its human-centered operation. On Norway's Solør Line, one of the few remaining railways where trains are dispatched manually using traditional train orders, history, and technology are woven together in a way that is rare in today's automated world. At the heart of this system are the...
The last day of steam at the Norwegian Railway Museum in 2024

The last puff of steam has faded into history. The Norwegian Railway Museum bid farewell to the steam locomotive Setskogen and the ever-stubborn diesel Tinfos in 2024, marking the end of a memorable summer season. Setskogen, on loan for the season, captured the hearts of visitors . While Setskogen thrilled the crowd, behind the scenes, the locomotive drivers battled with the stubborn diesel Tin...

Experience the charm and nostalgia at the historic Sysle Station on the Krøderbanen Railway in Norway! This enchanting railway line, which first opened as a narrow-gauge track in 1872, was later converted to standard gauge with the opening of the Bergen Line in 1909. Although it was decommissioned as an NSB line in 1985, the Krøderbanen has been lovingly preserved as a museum railway by the Nor...

Join me on a calm and relaxing journey on the local train from Guantanamo to Holguin in Cuba. This train only runs during the summer and in 2023 it was operated with a G8 locomotive from 1954 and former German "Silberling" coaches. Along the way, vendors continuously appear, selling everything from refresco (soda) and chupa-chupa (lollipops) to cookies and cigarettes. The train also includes a ...

Memories from 1998 when we ran tourist trains with steam locomotive between Åndalsnes and Bjorli in Romsdalen, Norway. It was a strenuous job for the fireman on the long climb from Foss Bridge up to Bjorli. Along the way, we took water for the locomotive from the large water column located in the terrain above Verma station. An experience of fantastic nature, dizzying views, and crystal-clear w...

In 1995, an adventurous locomotive crew from the Krøderbanen Heritage Railway in Norway embarked on an unforgettable journey to Germany and Poland. With their experience from locomotive practice weeks in Wolsztyn in 1990 and 1991, they had built strong bonds with the Polish crews and the locomotive management there. During their 1995 visit, they joined a freight train from Wolsztyn to Konotop o...

Hilsen fra Fido team. :-)
Interesting that they send a locomotive out with only one person in it. what if somethings happens to the engineer, like a heart attack.??
The driver has to respond to a safety button every minute, if he doesn't do it, the train stops automatically.
5082 KW is a lot of power for a train built in the 60s, 6800 bhp.
In my opinion not 2,5% which mean 2,5 meter climb every hundred meter! Perhaps 2,5 per thousand will be correct!
The incline is 25 per thousand.
I gather that no passenger trains run on this line at the present time.
No that is freight only.
Why does it appear to have a steering wheel?
a throttle to be exact
@@voidjavelin23 slightly passive aggressive, but thanks.
It is used to control the power contacts, also to control the motor ventilation.
@@harrikolanrailways9829 thankyou
@@KM-wl1tp a lot of old school locomotives around europe work like that too. Rather interesting 😌
Flott film og lun stemning i regnet.
Thanks for sharing this video...facinating to ride along.
Very interesting, once again! Thanks!
Real "everyday" railway-adventure.. 🙂
Another good video !
Is this standard gauge ❓️
Yes, 1435 mm.
_(How nice to view this presentation from my home turf (pun missing…) - Huge thanks!)_
Very nice video. Thank You for the voice and the animation.
I am curious. That train did not look heavy, so did it really need an assist, or was it just to film the old engine having a run out for you to film? Also is that engine in regular use or just preserved by the rail company. Thank you for video!!
The locomotive was in ordinary service, and yes, the train needed the help because of the 2,5 % incline. Nearly all freight trains has hjelper locomotives on this strech.
@@harrikolanrailways9829 Thank you for the reply! So it's not a preserved engine, is it just used as an assist loco?
@@chashouse8511 No, they are used in all kinds of freight trains.
EL14 is a powerhouse of a locomotive, despite its age. They are still in daily operation. It is old fashioned and reliable so there are many locomotive drivers who like them. I have (unfortunately) not been able to ride along in one of them, but I have many EL14 locomotives in my model train collection.
Being an American train enthusiast and watching Cuban rail footage is fascinating, this is all stuff that would be in museums here but for much longer than there, like their cars you can tell this is all stuff from before the revolution and subsequent American blockade. I would love to know how tours of these places are arranged, to see what steam looks like when it hasn't been dressed nicely.
There are still quite a few left of the steam locomotives that were in use until the sugar industry was reduced around the year 2000. Many are in poor condition, some have been restored externally and put on display as historical monuments, but very few steam locomotives are operational today. Last year, a group tour for railway enthusiasts from England was planned, but it was canceled due to the lack of places where one could be sure to experience steam locomotives in operation.
Great video and nice with TMZ :)

Cuba was the only country in the Western Hemisphere still operating steam locomotives before the end of the 1990s. The collapse of the USSR and the decline of Cuban sugar (thanks to Fidel Castro's desire to shift his island's economy away from overdependence on sugar to emphasis on different fields like healthcare, nickel production, et cetera) meant that Cuba's age-old sugar carry locomotives saw the twilight of their career.

Vidunderlig video Petter, veldig bra👍.
Where can you get tickets?
