      Correct! The POTUS does not declare war. The POTUS formally issues congress's declaration. I should have been clearer. To your point about everything being rigged: Perhaps you are right. Who knows? However, that is why at 06:08 I called the process theoretical: Our representatives are supposed to represent us, in theory. Thank you for the comment, my friend!

Half say adding music to these lectures was the best improvement and the other half say the music is distracting. Could the answer be quieter, subtler music? Thank you for helping me figure this out and working toward improvement!

    if someone signs up for "duty" to risk a)their life b) increasing the potential to create war crimes, and c) be a significant part of an immoral war... and blame the voters for this... then there clearly is a complete lack of accountability here. how about don't join the armed forces? it doesnt matter who is voted for, the industrial war complex is sewn into every party we can vote for. pretending voters have an option of where most conflicts countries get involved in is absurd

    • @Phil-0-Suffer
      @Phil-0-Suffer หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it is indirect, as I said. As Americans, we agree to stay in this country and it comes with responsibility. We have to accept responsibility for the elected officials that represent us. I don't think the answer is to simply not join the armed forces. We've all heard enough "death to America" to recognize the need for national defense. I like your point about accountability! I encourage you to develop that thought! On the scale of a country, we all make up the group. There is no "us" vs "them," within the country, as a country we are all "us." We all share the responsibility and accountability for what we do as a country. Indeed, other countries will hold us jointly accountable. So, some practical questions we can ask are, "What are you going to do to help?" "What am I going to do?" "What are we going to do?" There are courses of action we can take that demonstrate our personal accountability and there are others that don't. Thank you for listening and considering this important issue. I wish more people put thought into this, as you are doing!

    Something that I found to be quite concerning was the possible effects that porn consumption has on people’s minds (11:55). Studies have shown that porn consumption, whether it was violent or non-violent, may lead to violent tendencies towards women as well as a lack of empathy for rape victims. It’s very disturbing that something so easily accessible in today’s world can have such a negative impact. These violent tendencies and lack of empathy has plagued some to turn the cheek to sexual assault happening right in front of them (12:15). That just absolutely blows my mind. The fact that sorority members are self-reporting that they would allow sexual assault to happen right in front of them, and not intervene (contact the authorities, physical or verbal intervention, etc.), is some of the most cowardice shit. It’s even more disturbing that these people are the future generation.

    Around 08:20, the video spoke about the complaints from men regarding sex and expectations of them and there shortly after, the complaints from women regarding sex and the lack of pleasure that they were receiving. Following these complaints, it was stated that one had asked "But if it weren't for p*rnography, how would we ever learn to have sex?" I would like to comment on this specifically because I feel like p*ornography sets this almost unrealistic expectation of sex and how it should be, leaving individuals feeling uneasy about their sex lives and whether or not they are doing enough/too much. I think the question was a great one to ask because in what other ways are we taught about sex? Which, there are a few and those being by word of mouth or maybe a reading but those aren't generally as easy to understand for "visual" learners. Around 09:24 it is quoted that "sex for my students is what porn says it is." This leads me back to my statement of it being an almost unrealistic expectation. Everyone has a different need, want, or expectation during sex. Some find things more intriguing than others and things that work better for them. Does this generation look at sex as act of what p*ornography says it should be? Or an act of love. Why does sex have to be what p*rnography portrays it as? I think some individuals watch and find more excitement, as you will, watching p*rn than they do with their partner or significant other. It sets this precedent for how sex should be and can instances taint a relationship ruining something that could have been so great had it not have been affected by this. On the flip side, it can be the beginning of trying new things or a way to bond with your partner depending on how one's views of p*rnography. Many questions/thoughts have arised just by typing this but the last one that I will leave here is... if one has a set expectation of sex as a direct result of watching p*rn, will they ever be truly satisfied in their relationship? Do they find constant excitement by the script that is "written" or will the repetitiveness finally come to an end? I guess what I want to know is does one ever find true pleasure in the midst of having to live up this expectation?

      I agree with you that porn can set unrealistic expectations when it comes to sex with a partner. In some ways I believe porn can take the intimacy out of sex and paint it as this picture that's opposite of being an act of love, which you brought up. I think too the thought of sex stresses a lot of people when they're first being introduced to it and pressures them to turning to porn in hopes of gaining some sort of insight. Unfortunately for this, as you mentioned, it's not always the best source and may taint further experiences.

    This whole video in general was super interesting to me. The porn industry as a whole is quite unironically everywhere in every single corner of the internet and talking about how its affecting not only our lives but how it will effect the lives of our children in the future is a conversation I think more people need to have. But I would like to comment about 7:10 into the video about how easily accessible it is to a point where it is almost infuriating to me. The social media site X (formerly known as Twitter) is, at this point, infamous for having porn bots run rampant in every single comment section talking about how their "nudes [are] in bio". These bots and their content are so easy to reach any person on X for longer than 10 minutes will probably accidentally stumble onto this kind of content. It's become such a problem people are now making memes and jokes about the situation. The infuriating part about this for me is how easy it is to have children watch this stuff. Any person on Earth born after the creation of the internet has probably lied about their age or their parents consent in order to create an email or an account for some kind of service, so you know just as well how inaccurate the age statistics of any site are. It's especially concerning when you remember how impressionable children can be. I read recently that a children who have been exposed to content or media from a different country entirely have been found to develop the accent of that different country despite never being there or interacting with anyone from that other country aside from through the screen. And considering how easy it is to reach these kinds of adult and suggestive content one can really only wonder in horror as to what could possibly happen in these coming years.

    What I found interesting (which happens to be a result of that study that I don't find quite surprising) was from around 11:29 and on, where a lot of both the males and females in the study were found to be insecure about sexual performance and body image respectively. What is unfortunate is when you take a step back, you see how insecurities (not *only* within the "world of sex") plague society, especially among the youth. Younger people see people online, whether it be "influencers", celebrities, adult film stars, etc. and hold themselves to the standards depicted in the media they consume. This, in a way, is an add-on to the list of reasons as to why "adult content" should certainly be kept away from youth because, aside from other obvious reasons, it sets unrealistic expectations and poor personal insecurities for them as they grow. Those same youth become the adults in our society, possibly perpetuating these misplaced beliefs and insecurities.

    • @EmilyP0225
      @EmilyP0225 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with your response and I think body image and insecurities within people is a very big problem in the world today. I do believe it is an "add-on" to why p*rnography should be kept away from younger individuals because it is most certainly an unrealistic expectation of sex. I think it is crazy to see how common p*rn is a problem or a "hot topic" in relationships now and how it makes the other individual in the relationship insecure or like they are not good enough/performing to their partners standards in which are set by watching p*rn.

      @@EmilyP0225 Thank you both for your insights! It gets worse along the lines you are describing. If you read her book, The Right to Sex, there is a part where she describes a girl dealing with a break up. Her boyfriend would tell her that "she's doing it wrong," during sex and she didn't know what he meant until she watched p*rn. She had her first sexual experience with a guy who had his first sexual experience "in front of a screen," and that gave him unrealistic expectations. Now she has to live with the pain of those expectations and the resulting break up.

    I thought the connection between the categorization of sex and capitalism (13:44) was very interesting and something I never really thought of until watching this video. The normalization of categories perpetuates harmful ideas that only furthers the heteronormative capitalistic system. It is also so hard to distinguish what is "liberation" and what is benefiting those oppressive ideas of sex that have enabled the patriarchy for so long. The line is so blurry, and the vast access people have to content now a days makes it harder to step back and think about the negative effects of porn consumption.

    It's very interesting to have a pov of viewing sexwork. The media we consume in general is "midwestern" media. Before television the beauty standard for women was round women until midwestern media came and suddenly the beauty standard changed. It became thin, tall, light skin, etc. Midwestern media dominated culture values. This still continues today how having round curves with a tiny waist is the new beauty standard but these standards are extremely difficult to achieve without the help of getting work done. The same is implied when it comes to porn. How males can't change the size to their penis or their height. How women can't all the sudden loose weight and look like porn models. I can't see how this is healthy for anyone. Time and time again the media is influencing us and changing our views. Media can be seen as propaganda, all the marketing and promoting of beauty standard generates revenue for companies. Seeing how this ties with Kantian ethics by seeing people to an end and how capitalism abuses people.

I also really resonated with how you described how "media can be seen as propaganda, all the marketing and promoting of beauty standard generates revenue for companies", I think the beauty industry has historically always historically targeted insecurities and imperfections, but nowadays its so beyond unrealistic due to a mixture of social media, heavy editing, and like you said just propaganda, which in turn promotes their pockets while creating unrealistic envisions of beauty in the process.

      I find this interesting, as well. Comparing this aspect of Western society's culture to that of, let's say France (or Europe, really), there doesn't seem to be such a critical view on greater amounts of expressing sex in a larger way. It's not just relative to how we view the "beauty standard" you mention, but it also contributes to other unrealistic expectations (mainly sexual) placed within our society. This also plays into the high level of sexual content addiction, as the West prefers to make sexual content "all or nothing", making the "all" too extreme for youth audience. Being kept away from this hypersexualization will usually only cause the youth to seek it out even more. The way it should be is like that of how Europe treats sexual content... nothing extreme to where it's obviously inappropriate for common viewing and instead, seen as a normal part of human nature. Maybe this would reduce the level of porn addiction among the youth in Western society.

    The effect of pornography on the dehumanization of women and the studied inclination towards violence against women (11:56) reminds me of an excerpt from Laura Bates' novel "Men Who Hate Women," in which she studies how incels, Men's Rights Activists (MRA), Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), pick up artists, and more all typically have a common theme of dehumanizing women through the act of sex to support patriarchal values. Bates showed that many solo acts of mass murder committed by terrorists such as Elliot Rodger and even the more recent Bondi Junction mall attack in Australia have been connected to inceldom and misogyny in which the attacker very clearly targeted women. Incels are known for widely perpetuating the notion of treating women as sexual objects and refusing to acknowledge them as actual human beings (within incel groups women are referred to as "foids"/female humanoids, stacys, beckys, which are all subversion of women with a degrading sexual connotation) which is further supported by a porn-saturated culture. The group also seldom recognizes how their extremist notions affect men and further male insecurities much like the insecurities planted by porn (11:10) in which it is constantly enforced that men must have certain unattainable characteristics and abilities, which leads to impairments for both parties. "Men Who Hate Women" delves into this in a lot more detail than I could write in this paragraph, definitely worth a read especially when looking into the effects of pornography on men and women in modern society!

      @@Phil-0-Suffer I'll definitely look into Srinivasan's book, sounds interesting! MWHW is a book that explores the issue of misogyny and the ways in which it manifests in society. It also includes detailing on where misogynist extremists fall onto the spectrum of men-centered alt-right/misogynist ideologies. The author herself is a speaker and journalist who did a lot of research into these groups while also providing examples of actual events that have taken place since their creation. All the examples she provides are historically backed and cited and she typically analyzes them in relation to the specific misogynists she is talking about.

    I would agree with the video at (7:41) when it discusses that porn plays a role in promoting the subordination/objectification of women, but I can also make the assertion that for some (not all) it can also be used as a tool to educate them on what sex is, or can be. Although I do not think all porn can be educational nor realistic, I think for some it may provide them a sense of comfort in knowing what they could possibly expect, especially for those without much knowledge on the matter. Overall I agree with Aristotle stance with "moderation" and "acceptable use" (19:27), as porn can be detrimental to character growth, and overall self image, so it is the responsibility of the person engaging in said manner to hold themselves accountable, and to determine appropriate use.

      porn sets unrealistic standards for men and women. it can build insecurities and doubt about their own bodies and abilities and some of that is not changeable. If someone wants to use porn as an educational tool it is the assumption that it is for young people. If it's their first exposure to sex then it can have many negative outcomes.

    One question I have would be that of the person who would be more happy with casual sexual interaction because his attention is to taken up by other things, is how long can a person do that before it becomes ethically impossible?

    • @hudsonbursch1149
      @hudsonbursch1149 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If all parties are in agreement about having casual intercourse, it seems ethical. It may not be virtuous though.

    • @Phil-0-Suffer
      @Phil-0-Suffer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe it can be done indefinitely and remain ethical. I think people call it "ethically non-monogamous."

  • @ga5vin
    @ga5vin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don't know why I was surprised to know that becoming polyamorous in a marital status under the utilitarian perspective would be considered ethical when the whole essence of this theory is essentially more happiness = ethically correct. However, I can't help but think of up to what extent can it be considered? like in a covenant marriage in Christianity, wouldn't opening up the marriage undermine the principal doctrine of marriage thus leading to more negative reactions within their circle? per se family and (conservative) friends.

    • @AndyHensley-lw2kp
      @AndyHensley-lw2kp 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was also surprised to find that the case. My answer would be I guess it varies between religion because there are some religions which actually allow that . Not to say any is better than the other. But at that point the rules just change whenever we want so we fall into an ethical dilemma

    • @ashdenzmore7916
      @ashdenzmore7916 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that the extent depends on the circumstance and who defines what is morally wrong within the religion. Polamry may be unspeakable, until it suddenly presents the religion with some sort of sense of righteousness.

    • @Phil-0-Suffer
      @Phil-0-Suffer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If someone is a utilitarian, their ethics are guided by utilitarianism, not necessarily their religion. I hope that helps.

    It is interesting to me how the virtue of not performing their desired pleasures when married or in a relationship is considered a vice of cowardice and rashness. Personally, this would still be considered a very immoral action even if it contributed towards cowardness because it also breaks the trust of loyalty, and the consequences would regularly be immense. It begs the question of how these types of immoral actions contribute to fulfillment and abides by the ethics.

    • @ga5vin
      @ga5vin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with your emphasis on hurting the integrity of trust within the relationship. And, it might be a little further from your response, but I also want to raise the question while on the topic of virtue; how is "for the right reasons" determined? what if both partners have pure intentions but are very contradicting in nature? for example: one partner wants to do it to show his love, and the other one wants to do it to start a family? would that cancel out the rightness of both reasons?

    • @Phil-0-Suffer
      @Phil-0-Suffer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ga5vin that sounds like two rights making a right.

    • @Phil-0-Suffer
      @Phil-0-Suffer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The cowardice discussed was about someone cheating on their partner out of FOMO. The rashness was about cheating on your partner without thinking about the consequences.

    a priori, ethics has potential, clearly as seen here. I wonder why it is then that the only thing that has failed me and made my life truly empty was devotion to ethics. The more I fit a mold, the less life I truly lived. disconnected. It is the one thing you can’t quite “get right” in philosophy - there’s so many factors to an ethical decision it is almost impossible to say you have given due diligence to any ethical decision. And that is only the trepidation of personal ethics - oh people ethics? When people force ethics on you and others… it is the only sin of mankind.

      “no war” “do not fk ___” these are their rally cries. Ethics. If I wish for no war, I should be careful for what I wish for. Because what is required? Surveillance and fear 1984, or Brave new world with pleasure, lots of sxx, and no deep human experience. Do we want everyone popping soma (brave new world)? Everyone happy all the time artificially? Pop the pill to reduce the pain you feel at the expense of mental acuity? Dull your mind? Soma societies go extinct. How about the “do not fck ___” rule? what are the first principles and limitations? There’s so much more to say. Think about it. Not even ethics is ethical.

Just because your heart is stolen doesn't mean they won't forget it at your house.

    Did youth really believe flat earth in 2010s under that movement? I know that many in that time seemed to think that people used to believe that even though they never did unless it's some fringe or foreign place idk . I know royal society & European aristocracy spread roomers to scare explorers of the new world as they raced to colonize. But only an atheistic Darwin argument uses it but they also argued against phenotype ,code and many other things as well that's more interesting than that was .

      @Phil-0-Suffer no the earth was spherically measured around the time of Jesus and was widely known by all literate class of people across all countenants especially all in the western hemisphere. But in areas where they are drinking blood and sacrificing each other its no telling what was thought of but we have no way of knowing such things that aren't recorded

      @Phil-0-Suffer 2010s it was definitely a group who believed I just wasn't sure it wasn't more of a test your ability to prove things. But to say the past was flat earth, This is like saying modern philosophy that uses unicorns 🦄 the Islamic fairy tale pagasis as examples or place mark zombie for thought experiments really believe that even though they know letter for letter translator always knew one horn or 2 horn rhino was a unicorns or duocornus. Separated from Egypt with no visual context lead many in crusades to bring back such depictions. But when you sit at a camp fire under a full moon anyone can hold there hands up and imulate shadowing and see that it's a sphere lol To think.so little of the past is the corruptions

      @Phil-0-Suffer great work here in the context of everything but your orientation may have missed some excersizes of these Tools & practices . 1900s structuralism was extremely full of revisionist history and things like this so its not any individual fault . We need a flat earth or equal movement and excersize about every 40 years apparently as a a modern academic society. Lol In a world that 90 years ago wasn't operator friendly enough for women to open doors because of shotty construction or without policing safe environment we definitely get amnesia of separated from the past quickly .
