Making a Zine in One Hour: How I Draw Quickly with Mixed Media in an Odd Orange Zoom Drawing Session
Hello! In December, the last Odd Orange was themed "Winter Wonderland" and I made the drawings into a little zine. In this video I walk you through the process of making it, with tips and tricks on how to draw fast, make a cohesive composition and create a zine. Hope you find it useful, and do let me know in the comments whether you join the Odd Orange sessions too!
In this zine I used the following art supplies:
From London Graphic Centre:
- Watercolour paper tidd.ly/40CF5Hv *
From Jackson's Art tidd.ly/49R2J7A:
- Acrylic inks by Schmincke, Liquitex, Daler-Rowney, Golden tidd.ly/3CfNqZS *
- Tombow brush pens tidd.ly/49ZKAV5 *
- Caran D'Ache Luminance colour pencils, Necolour II crayons tidd.ly/4fzOYLy *
- Winsor and Newton watercolour markers tidd.ly/40cxnnB *
- Derwent colour pencils tidd.ly/4iSfH95*
- Liquitex acrylic markers tidd.ly/3QgbfUN *

I loved your zine when you showed it at the end of the session. So it was really cool to see it come together.. all the colours worked so well!
Thanks April! I'm still in the slightly darker, muted palette from last May 😂 Was my audio better this time?
The zine turned out so good Arati! A good way to join on a drawing session 😊
Thanks Teresa! 💛 If you join in the zooms next time let us know in the chat!
I will! January was a bit rough sadly I couldn't join! 😬 Enjoy your weekend @ArtySubu
Aw, hope all is well 💛 life here has been nuts as well, can't believe it's already February!!!
This was really such a fun video today, Arty. I was on Emma's Patreon before, but the time change and my full time job made it too difficult. I have been playing with a bit more illustration these days as well just to add fun back in. You made a lovely zine. I'd like to make a printed one to sell one day. Thank you, and wishing you well. 🖌📚
Thanks so much Reese! 💛 I'm also only on Sarah and April's patreon at the moment. I find it hard to find time to make use of all the zooms and content! I'd love to make a printed zine too! But where's the time 😂 Hope you're well?
Such a fun idea, and you executed it so brilliantly!
Thank you so much! Are you going to try the zoom sessions or the zine? 💛
@ArtySubu yes to both!
Brilliant! Let us know in the zoom chat if you make it! 💛
how beautiful. I got so inspired to try it out! 🧡
Wonderful! Please share or tag me on instagram @ArtySubu if you make it! 🧡🧡🧡
I absolutely love how the zine turned out!!!! Feels magical and with a cozy vive! Awesome work!! ❤❤❤
Thanks so much! 😊 It was a bit stressful at the time, but I would 100% do it again!!! Will you try it?
@ArtySubu Absolutely! Halfway through video I was already planning it haha!! But first I shall watch the video again! 😄
Brilliant! I also recommend Sarah Dyer's videos on her Patreon! 💛
If you're curious how I draw in the Odd Orange zoom sessions, here's your chance to find out! If you watch all the way through, pop an 🧡 in the comments!!!
Where you from ?
Hello! I'm Indian, now living in England 🥰
@@ArtySubu nice but in england wow I wish i would live in england too, what is weather conditions now in england.
Very cold! 🥶🥶🥶 January and February are miserable winter months where it gets dark at 4pm! 🥺
@@ArtySubu which place have art store ? in england.
Lots of the cities will have art stores, and many smaller towns and villages also. Depends where you are!
Oohhh. Great sketchbook tour. I’m a first time viewer, so now I’m going to have to watch part one, and all the rest of your videos, plus subscribe! Love the quirkiness of your sketches!
Aw that's so lovely! Thank you so much! I'd love to know how you found this video 🥰 hope you enjoy the rest of my videos!
@@ArtySubu Well your video just seemed to pop up on my You Tube home page, looked interesting, and voila! 😀
Hahaz brilliant!! 🥰 What have you watched so far?
How did it go? Did you buy it again? I have just started thi planner for the first time.
Hiya! I used it but did not rebuy because I felt that a simpler system works better for me. This year I got the Rhodia Perpetual Planner which is a weekly diary. Let me know how you go with this one 👍🏼💛
Aw man!!! Now I wanna order all of these books!! 😂
They're glorious! You can try and get them preloved too! Which is your favourite? 💛
Thank you for this informative video! :) How do the posca pencils compare to caran d'ache luminance and Faber Castell polychromos?
Glad you found it useful 💛 the Posca is similar in texture to Polychromos but softer and more blendable. It also works on other surfaces that Polychromos and Luminance may not as it's oil based. However there is no light-fastness information from Posca so I don't use them in artwork that's going to be displayed in a frame or sold 💛
Incredible talent. Wow!
Thank you 💛 lots of practice, zero genius! 😀
Bridgerton? I think you meant Barkington...
Ha! Great one! I shall rename it Barkington series! 😂💛
Yes pls ~ that would be interesting to see you do a video comparison with Acrylic Gouache & using matte medium with regular Acrylic paint… 👏🏻 (As it was a few months ago that you did this particular video, I thought I’d check your more recent ones that you’ve done since, but didn’t see a comparison video as yet?!) Also just wanted to ask you what brand & colour/shade of yellow gouache that you used to show us your new short brush ~ it looks lovely? 🖌️💛
Ooh, thanks for the reminder, I'll move it up the list a bit! I have unedited videos sitting in my queue 💛 ... That might have been Permanent Yellow Deep in the video. I did a gouache swatching video a while ago (updated one coming soon!) that will show you it, I think th-cam.com/video/vLPv9CQSPFo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=S3_TffMRGawCJ6fH
@ awe thx for that… I actually think I’ve already watched that gouache swatching video of yours a while back, but will take another look & pay close attention to the yellows! 🙏🏻😃💛
Great! I've added and changed a few colours and brands since then! 💛 Happy New Year!!
Loving all the dogs!!! Amazing drawings ❤
Thank you so much! More dogs coming soon 💛😂
Amazing illustrations, congratulations! ❤❤❤
I really appreciate your taking the time to leave a comment 💛 thank you so much!
What a beautiful sketchbook ❤ your style is so vibrant, aesthetic and quirky 😊
Thank you so much 💛 I'm trying to think less and draw intuitively more!
gorgeous sketchbook, I love it ☺
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! 💛 Do you have a favourite page?
Okay, but how do we make Alice in Wonderland and mermaid dogs a reality?🤔
I think we must find a science-wizard to do something about this! 🤗💛
Liked and subbed ❤❤
Thank you so much! 💛 Hope you enjoyed the video!
I really like the 24 dog page, the pink was o pretty with the other colours. The calendar looks great!
Thanks April! Really leaning into the dogs this year and next 💛🤗 Neon pink Prismacolor for the win!
Hello! Hope you enjoy this sketchbook tour! Here's part 1 if you missed it: th-cam.com/video/sTQDn-kQvaU/w-d-xo.html 💛
I love your documentation videos! What do you use to film your drawing progress? I'm super new to the idea of documenting the actual drawing but I think I'd like to start doing some video capture of my art process in the new year!
Thank you so much 💛 I just use my phone, it's a Google Pixel 8. Used to have the classic Canon G7X Mark II but the phone is better quality and always there!
@@ArtySubu Cool! Do you use a stand like a gorillapod to keep it at the right angle? Or any tips on how to keep it from falling over? XD
Yes! I have a tripod with a boom arm that extends over my desk so that the shaking of the desk while I'm working doesn't make the camera move. I find flexible phone mounts shake a lot and don't support the phone (which is quite heavy) enough. I think I showed it in my first studio tour video th-cam.com/video/47tImqfqhak/w-d-xo.html
@@ArtySubu Thank you! I'm new to your channel so it's nice to get a reference. <3
Oh yay! How did you find me? Suggested videos? Or were you looking for something in particular?
Great ideas! I was just gonna use my stamps and ink pads to make paper, but I think I’m gonna give this a try instead
Oh great! Do tag me on Instagram @ArtySubu or email me pics, I'd love to see what you make!! 💛
I enjoyed this journey and had a great time listening to your accent too (I really want my next dnd character to have a similar accent but it's very inaccessible to me atm!)
Glad you enjoyed it! My accent is Indian mixed with a little bit of everyone I've ever met and everywhere I've ever been, overlaid with the influence of living in the UK! Very weird! 😂💛
@ArtySubu I love the sound! It has a bit of everything! I have no idea how to recreate it... Am planning a trip to Canada (3 weeks over Christmas!), so trying to get some ideas on what to pack and how to use while on a trip!
Haha! That's great! Walk to Gerrard Street in Toronto and have a listen, lots of similar accents there, probably! 👍🏼 Have fun! Are you going minimalist or taking lots of things?
I’m just curious if all your supracolors in the 40 set are marked with supracolor ii or do some of them just say supracolor soft? I’m concerned about the set I bought from Amazon because only 14 are marked with supracolor ii
Oh interesting! I will check them today and get back to you. Do all yours feel the same when you use them? 💛
I just checked and they all say "Supracolor II Soft" on them. I've also discovered I have one pencil missing from the box and it's got to be somewhere in my studio so I need to have a tidy-up now 😂💛
@@ArtySubuthank you. I went to buy some open stock at my local art store and some of them don’t have the supracolor ii stamp either. Interesting that not all of them are marked
Interesting! I wonder if they changed the branding at some point?
Wow so impressive thanks for sharing!🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Glad you liked it 💛 will you be making some this year?

Glad you enjoyed it! 💛 I'm still happy with most of my purchases and have been using them with delight!

That sounds brilliant! What fun!!! 💛 What medium?
nice and biggest stationery shop
It's a great shop 💛 glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi Ararti! What a lovely video!!! Now that watched it, I can't wait to go to that shop, next time I'm in Berlin. I already knew they had japanese brands that are nowhere else to find in Germany and I once ordered Panart brushes there online which are also nowhere to find in G. When I saw your Pental brushes they reminded me of the Sennelier Ink Brushes. I don't know, if you know them. They are are quiet cheaper than the Pentals but the ink is not watersolable after it dried... but I found, if you used the ink quiet heavily it still can be activated with water after it dried. I love to use them outdoors or if you are to lazy to put out paint but want to draw/paint quick sketches that look like you have used a brush. :)
Glad you liked the video, and thank you for watching!! 💛 Thanks also for the tip on the Sennelier brush pens! I'll keep an eye open for them. I did fill some empty brush pens with fountain pen waterproof ink and that seems to be working well so far! 👍🏼
@@ArtySubu I tried something similar: acrylic ink in cheap water brushes, but it didn't work. They leaked 🙈
I've just got a couple of empty Molotow markers and will experiment with filling them and make a video 💛👍🏼
@@ArtySubu Oh, I got some too. But also bought the propper acrylic refills. This works nicely. But my failed experiment included real ink from Amsterdam (Royal Talens) and the water brushes to imitate the ink brushes and in order to take my favorie inks outside. :)
Ah right! They've been fine so far but I was careful to keep them upright and not fill to the brim! 💛
I have brought on line from here . Best prices on Art materials in Berlin not at all pretentious like most art shops here .. I know a few serious artist who use this store
That's really great feedback! Yes, they came across as very down to earth 💛
This is super helpful, thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this!!
I'm so glad you found it useful! 💛 It's a beautiful book that I look through often.
I’d love a video about trees; including, your tree books! I also really love drawing and painting moss and lichen covered branches and tree stumps. ❤
Will do one soon, then! Stumpy trees and old gnarled ones are amazing to draw, right? 💛
all those colours are so pretty 🥰🥰
The pencils? Aren't they?! I went sketching at the British Museum this week, and used the purple one - so nice and soft! 🤩
Wow prismacolor open stock! Why can’t we have that here in the uk!!!!!! I’ll defo be going to that shop when I eventually go Berlin (one day!! 😂) great vid - thanks for sharing 👍🤓
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!! 💛 Berlin is an interesting place to visit - not pretty but chock full of history!
@@ArtySubu I always wanted to see where my fav ink (deatrementis) was made in Germany and faber castelle 😂might have visit my German cousins and use that as an excuse to go there and check out all the art stores! 😂
@SketchingFineArt oh DeAtramentis inks are so good! I use the black waterproof one in my Fude nib pen! We might go again and I'll check out some more shops. A friend had a bad experience at Boesner so not sure about that one!
@@ArtySubu yep that’s the ink I use in all my fountain pens and dip pens - but it’s quite expensive and only a few places online sells it - it’s around £17 per bottle with delivery - wonder if it’d be cheaper from Germany 🤔also wanted to go Switzerland sooo bad to check caran d’ache supplies! 😂
It is indeed expensive, but lasts a LONG time. I also use Noodlers ink for ny everyday Parker fountain pen and that bottle has lasted well over 2 years and still half full! 👀💛
A video I have missed...I love Jacksons, I spend way too much money with them, lol!! I chuckled when you said you were too short to reach the top shelves....at only 5 foot myself, I know what you mean!! Luckily My husband is 6 foot 2, and is good at reaching for me!! Lovely haul, I really want to try W&N gouache, am I right in thinking you can use water to re-wet that particular type o the paint!!?? Have a lovely week!!xx
Haha! I'm 5 foot too, with a 6 foot husband who does the tall-person stuff! Useful, aren't they?! 🤣💛 Yes, traditional gouache is rewettable. In fact, I mostly use it re-wetted rather than fresh from the tube. I'll be doing a video soon on that.
@ArtySubu they really are useful, lol!! I've been looking at gouache, I've got acrylic, but I'll definitely be treating myself to some traditional gouache!!xx
Sounds good! I also got myself some lovely super matte medium from Golden that gives an acryla-gouache effect to acrylic that is really smooth and more cost-effective. 💛
