Fiberskyn heads on my sewer-pipe drum kit! Was that a good idea, or does it belong in the sewer?

I built drums (which resemble North drums) out of PVC pipe and used Remo CS heads for years. Today I changed all of them to Remo Fiberskyns. Check out the difference in sound!

You can some of us for that collab but I'll help you with the copyright laws 😊
drum fill(s) at 9:07 was awesome. Thanks for sharing these super cool pieces of history with us drum nerds!
Glad you enjoyed it!
North, Vox, Trixon are way cool. Without "Tune Bot" and their calculator, I would be lost tuning a large set...(every 4th drum is tuned to the same note, only a octave higher)
I just downloaded this exact app but my screen doesn’t show the plus sign to get you to the notes. It only shows the ~ sine symbol. Opening that gives me 4 options: sine, square, sawtooth, triangle. I checked and played with all the settings and none provide that + symbol. Now next to the play button there are - and + buttons but they only increase and lower the the tone. I only see the free version which I got and it has the ads. There is no other upgrade, pro or premium option. Not sure what’s happening there but I was curious to see this app work. It got my curiosity juices flowing.
I'm biased as I have a Sonor HiLite Exclusive in black with copper hardware but even with this admission, the Sonor sounds a thousand times better than the North. It's great that you've got the North up to speed though. All the best
Rad video, the sickest garage kit ever, dude is a real American!
Both snares need an intervention; aurally ugh.
How do you measure or calculate the sound with the generator? Or does the generator automatically calculate pitch on its own if you the smartphone next to the lugs of your toms and snare?
Once you determine what frequency you would like the drum to be, and I would recommend you listen to notes on a piano to get the correct frequency, then you simply set the frequency to that level and hold it next to each lug as you tune the drum so that the tone of tue drum head matches the frequency.
I downloaded the frequency generator app, but I am struggling to operate it right now.
It can be a little difficult to adjust because tiny movements make the frequency change quite a bit. But if you use the little plus and minus buttons you can do fine tuning.
What did you replace the bass drum spurs with?
I'm not sure exactly where I got them, but they were generic, heavy duty bass drum spurs.I might have bought online somewhere.
I’ve never seen them for sale but North used to sell these as marching tenor drums. The Blue Devils marched with them in the 70’s and 80’s.
Sir, you need a talk mic.
True. In my later videos I did eventu!lly get one.
We really enjoyed this! Thanks for sharing ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Bound to hit something haha
😄
This kits are fit for Portnoy
Both kits sound wicked!
The North kit sounds good
Why you do this ? By ear ? The Softwere is nice but why you dont put a mic and send to a laptop and open a Eq with note frequencies ? Tell what note is the Tom or Snare
thanks from an old and broken drummer...
what a job,,good enough for king james,,it looks real good you'll sell that
ya got some chops bro,,def pro ability ya read to
If i could play like that id be happy with any set.
I have a set. Baby Blue with the black rings. 4 toms on a curved bar, one floor, one kick. Love them !
The North drums (also similar Staccato drums) are the type of "Concert" type drums meaning they only have a batter head. Phil Collins used to play Gretsch concert drums.
Floor Tom’s don’t need O rings! Let them sing. If they don’t sound right the top and bottom heads don’t have the right tension difference between them.
brooo what is your hihat and the double petal swich thingg
It was called the Janus pedal and was made by Mapex years ago
Ooh I like that hihat switcher
Kick drum - Reno Powerstroke with falam pad with a hard beater.
Sounds good ,but the best concert tom kit is still Phil Collins Gretsch kit on In the air tonight. (imho). But I might be biased having a vintage Gretsch kit with Remo FA Fiberskyn's tuned medium high for jazz. I find you cant tune too high with them or they start to choke. Interesting seeing and hearing the North drums.
*SOME HOW,* This *_"NORTH"_* drum set looks much bigger when you have it setup *_"OUTSIDE,"_* In the sunlight!!
Fun video! Nice drums and playing. I live near Portland, Oregon, and I heard that the original designer of North Drums lives here.🤔 Nice Yamaha V-Max motorcycle, by the way.😮
Your are good drummer brother.🙏🏼✌️🥁🥁
Thanks ✌️
Love that North set. Reminds me of Allan Whites kit from the Yes days.
My bad….mahogany.
Nice sound on the double heads. Re the shells copper!
Kick drum is important when recording drums that’s what my instructor said
Cool video🎉
Thanks 😁
Imposible conseguir fundas para los tambores North.
They should far better without the rings
maybe my ears have problem because for me its flat and its also a bit hard to hear any significant note differential..
I used to have a set of the vintage North Drums, I bought them at a drum show, the shape is aerodynamic!
Damn, Chris. I am sooo envious!! Thanks for this!
BOW WOW WOW.
The north drums sound like marchiang band drums. Like perhaps if a band did a field show, the set could be played in the pit.
Put double-sided Velcro on those pillows then there not going anywhere
Obviously a man of taste. Two great drumkits & a classic mini! What could be better?!
Well I will tell you of one more but I won't say anything cuz he will be out looking for it lol
Just the cymbals and Speed King alone are worth more than 60 dollars.
I have a Slingerland Gene Krupa Radio King snare from 1946 or 7 and it has a slightly different cloud badge. I think yours is a little bit older. Definitely 40's era. Edit: I remember people playing North kits when I was a kid and recently saw one for sale at my local used instrument store. Cool looking, but moving those things for gigs would be a huge headache!
that copper plated set looks great and I like how your other is sandwiched between your classic mini and yami v max? bigger toys for bigger boys. Rock on mate.
Thanks 👍
I had a 7 pce set of Staccatos and I used Evans hydraulic heads and that was the absolute best sound I ever got using concert toms. Nice job and great kits Chris!!
