I remember going in about 99 with the Brownies and it was absolutely chucking it down. The park wasn't particularly full because we pretty much walked onto the tower of terror and it was so quiet that we went round about 4 times before we were bored and got off. There was no one else in the queue.
Family of 4 travel to blackpool spend day at theme park, food, drinks, hotel for 1 night total cost 480.00. Cheaper to go Morocco for week 😂
Time to move on blackpool, the theme park is finished, the hotels bars etc are empty many closed down. Most Brits just save and go aboard for fun and games the uk is too expensive for what little you get
Regarding Harry Matthews who was the maintenance worker who was killed. My first memories of Harry are when I started in 1998, he was the member of staff who trained me to operate the section 2 rides a few weeks before the season opened. He was a great guy, funny and kind, extremely good at his job. Reliable and friendly, he was admired by everybody bar non in the park. He made a grave error of judgement which cost him his life. Luckily for me I didn't work there when the accident happened, but I have friends who were there. It was a great shock to us all, and I still think of him fondly.
It’s such a tragic story 😔
Thanks for this series. Like the old lady in Titanic, the history of the park can be summed up quite briefly, but the reality of living it was very different. I go years and years without seeing my friends I worked with, but every now and again I bump into people and it is like the years between have not happened and we pick up right were we left off. We had a reunion in 2015 for those of us working there in the late 90's and it was incredible how we are seemingly interlocked from spending our formative years living in each others pockets. We worked and played together all summer long and I can't think of a better way I could have spent those years. Feels like a bit of a cheat code, but we got paid to hang around with our friends all day. The fact the young generation in the local area now don't get a chance to do the same makes me quite sad.
This is a great series of videos! Really enjoyable and I’d love to see one similar for American adventure 😊😊
Thank you 🙏. I’ve got a list of parks to get through. And that will be one of them 😀
@ I can’t wait to see what else you come up with 😀
That promotion to get Grand Parents in for free so they can see their grandkids have fun is so heart-warming
I think it was a great idea given the demographic of the park 😀
The story group leased it to knights leisure Ltd and the new thing they advertised as the new thing for the 2012 season was the website 😂
Lol
I live in the area but I never once visited Camelot theme park. However this video did reminded me of a time in the late 90s. I remembered going to a rally car event there 👍
Another enjoyable video buddy, although when you said when Camelot got £200 worth of money and wouldn't happen now as everyone is contactless! Not everyone is-some people still carry cash 👍🏻 Also see/read on your poll that Flamingo Land won, when do you start filming that video Chris????
Its usually about 2 months of research so probably the new year. But sooner if I can. 😀
I was quite surprised when the park closed down. I did attend frequently in the latter years and the park was never deserted. It was always busy, the queues were long and it was a fun park! Maybe it was the incidents and frequent change of ownership that started to make people think differently about how much they trusted the park.
It’s a shame it closed. I do wish I’d got to visit 😔
Anyone else find it weird that so many UK theme parks opened in the 80s? Camelot, Alton Towers, American Adventure, Thorpe Park to a certain extent. Anyone got any ideas why this may be? Do we think it was linked to Disney World opening around that time?
That’s a good question. Because if Universal comes I can’t see lots of other parks opening. More worried some would close!
Thank you so much for these videos, mate. Like I said under an earlier video, Camelot was a massive part of my childhood and was my favourite place in the world. Not only have you hit the nostalgia, you've answered a lot of questions I had about ride timelines etc.
Glad you enjoyed 😀
Always sad to see a theme park close but this place was run down for years beforehand. We used to go on school trips to Camelot even though we lived on the outskirts of Blackpool and PB would've made more sense. Made for some great exploring when it did close too. Same with Pleasure Island at Cleethorpes as I'm from there originally. Keep up the great videos 👍
Aye seems it was on life support for many years 😔
3:55 I live not far from that windmill 😂 Great series dude!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed 😁
Another great series. Can't wait for the flamingo land series which along with lightwater valley are my closest parks. Hope you do a series on lightwater valley one day
thank you, I suspect I'll get round most of the UK parks so it'll happen 😁

@@coaster_dad it was as a kid and scary lol
You should do one on Flambards.

Living in Accrington and driving past Camelot on the way to Southport (or Blackpool), we never visited the park. I don't think it was ever interesting enough to the family or to a couple of teens.
International company could have saved it pleasurewood hills was Should have hosted bands Knightmare jet coaster at grona lins
Wish i couldve got to Camelot, but it closed when i was younger... Knightmare looked nuts, wish it got saved. Same for Dragon Flyer. Shame the park died tbh, it looked like a cool place, despite all of its issues... Probably cheaper than Pleasure Beach as well
Yeah I wish I’d got there too. Definitely an odd little place but I would have liked to experience it first hand.
Knightmare was a great coaster and it should have been saved for sure. There were photos on forums back in the day of the knightmare trains being stored at southport pleasureland too.
I recognise that they're not Thoosie parks, but the history of the Gulliver's chain has got to be worth looking at.
Yeah I’m sure I’ll get to it 😀
great video, i think the land can only be used for leisure or entertainment purposes is what the council want but the scarecity event is good getting to see the old buildings and places
Yeah they def don’t seem to want to approve houses 🤷♂️
What another excellent video by you Coaster Dad! It has been really interesting to learn more about the Camelot Theme Park in the 2000s! This was another awesome TH-cam video by you Coaster Dad ❤
Thank Matt. Glad you enjoyed. It was definitely an interesting place!
The decline accelerated due to predatory housing developers. The Hotel was initially bought by a company that wanted to shut it and redevelop it for 1,000 homes and were blocked from doing so, they then sold it on again to another hotel operator who then pretty much divorced it from the operation of the park with them turning it into a country spa hotel. The final owner of the theme park Story Homes was a housing developer so those last 3 years it was pretty obvious they wanted to close the park (they even admitted it in their press release announcing the acquisition saying they had funded the park to remain open for one further year while they developed their plans) and they then put in housing applications for a couple of hundred low density executive homes and a golf course but were turned down by the Council citing lack of supporting services in the village. After the park closed Story Homes just sat on the land for a decade filing new applications for executive homes every 2 or 3 years, in 2018 it was estimated that the land was worth £800m and could accommodate over 5,000 homes.
Yeah and they still haven’t got their way 🙈
God I miss Camelot. We love visiting the park for Scare City Experience just to feel the nostaliga of what used to be there. Love these series mate, keep em coming 👏
Cheers bud. Glad you enjoyed 😀
Gauntlet was my first inversion, and put me off another for a while, weird park but I loved Dragon Flyer and the shows they put on as a kid, but never went back after around 13, still sad to hear when it closed
yeah I wish I'd visited when I was younger :(
On the map in the newspaper at 14:52 they got southport mixed up with stockport labelling pleasureland as being there instead of southport. Bonkers how they didn't double check for mistakes like that. Great video, always loved going here as a child, thanks
£60,000 for a life is disgusting considering the 2 girls that lost a leg each on The Smiler got millions and survived
Yeah I was shocked how little the fine was, even for 20 years ago!
Yeh, if he died today, the family would only get £100,000 can't believe that
The person that died was a 56 year old senior ride engineer with years of experience who was the person who was essentially responsible for writing the parks unwritten safety rule book so they decided to fine Camelot for the management failing of not having a formal written rule book, but the actual death was considered the engineers own fault rather than the parks as they were a subject matter expert who knew better.
I live very close to the former Camelot site, and they have started to build a few houses on the perimeter. There have been multiple applications to develop the entire site for new housing, but they've been repeatedly rejected because the local infrastructure is highly unsuitable for a massive housing estate, and the locals are dead against it. There have been "SAY NO TO CAMELOT REDEVELOPMENT" posters all over the place for years.
Yeah I do wonder what will eventually happen to the land or if it will remain empty for years to come
I’m only down the road from what once was Camelot. The lack of investment eventually killed it especially with strong competition very nearby. Pleasurebeach,Alton Towers etc. Personally it’s 1 of those places you visit and you don’t rush back. Shame as the site had massive potential.
Good series as always. Talking about gate price, the annual pass was around £35, so a lot of teens use to get that as you only needed to go twice. - if i remember correctly the target was £200 for a family of 4 across acess and discretionary spending. The park also used to hire a hell of a lot of students for their first jobs and so you rarely trusted the food. If your mate was old enough to operate a ride (Excalibur 2) they would put it in a more intense mode 😅 whilst you were on. I also remember whirlwind having its own advert too and possibly marketed at the UK's first spinning coaster, although i might be wrong. The story group brought the land, however they did not operate it. It was leased by the knights group (if i remember correctly) which was owned by the former manager of the park and was leased on a year by year basis. I believe poor weather and the Olympics was sighted as the blame for the poor season and it just did not make enough money to continue on to the next year. It was well known by the staff that the park was on borrowed time as the story group purchased the land and were waiting on planning permission to come through on the houses then would 'evict' Camelot. I think the issue with the park was the loss of direction after the 90's and with the likes of Southport (which was in ita former state the stepping stone to then Blackpool) and Gulliver's world which was only further up the motorway and catered for a slightly younger audience it was a bit lost. Knightmare was a brilliant coaster and when it was in japan used to have a mountain front to it. It also had a sister but mirror fliped coaster that i believe had a crash this or last year and is also due to be removed. Anyway ill stop ranting on now, great video!
Thanks for all the info! You clearly know the history well 😁
Seeing Metroland ranked below Camelot on an article featured! That is a disgrace 😂 metroland was class and I have many happy memories as a kid/teenager there. Metroland was way ahead of its time in many ways
1:31 An Awesome Storytelling About Camelot Theme Park. XXxxx 🇬🇧 🇦🇺 🇺🇸
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed 😀
Park was simply in the wrong place...north west is always wet n cold...just not in correct location
yeah that wouldn't help, but BP is not far from where Camelot was and it's been there for 125+ years 😁
It was the ease of access to the park that was the issue. The motorway services that was literally next door to it could not be opened for direct access to it as it would have required significant upgrades (although locals that knew how to access the services did anyway)
