    Dan, I have been watching Masonry restoration videos on TH-cam for at least 2 years. Your video content and the close up photography are extremely well done. Imagine my surprise to discover I live in same neighborhood as the house you are working on. My limestone/quartz window sills should have been replaced years ago: they are beyond dilapidated, they're dangerous. Your videos service the dual purpose of masonry education but also as a great reference for the quality of your work. I will be calling your office shortly.

    What size lentils are recommended for windows and doors? “1/4 “3/8 “1/2? I used “1/2 for garage opening and “1/4 for window should I go thicker? I also use galvanized lentils only I don’t want to deal with rust. is “1/2 too thick for 3 story home? Is “1/4 too thin?

    • @LightGesture
      @LightGesture 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can't have too thick. 1/4" would probably be fine on your window.

    How did a 4 inch piece of natural stone fit in the same spot as a 3 1/4 brick?

    • @danbloom5441
      @danbloom5441 ปีที่แล้ว

      The brick was closer to 3 3/4”, oftentimes they are laid on a large mortar joint eg, 3/4” so the 4 inch limestone sill will fit with a smaller mortar joint. Typically the brickwork will also not be super tight to the window frame so we often have a little bit more room between the sill and window frame. We always lock up the stone tight to the window frame to prevent any water infiltration if the caulking ever fails

    • @DrMJJr
      @DrMJJr 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agreed. I would’ve used a solid copper pan up under the window and over that limestone still with vertical damns (just as you suggested) up the walls a few inches on each end… Also no masonry ties to the wood framing members or at last the sheathing??

    Can I ad lime for flexibility to Portland cement ? I'm making cement pot plants only small ones but I have noticed cracking

    • @danbloom5441
      @danbloom5441 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert, You CAN add lime to Portland cement to make the mix more plastic, and increase the workability. If your plant pots are cracking I would guess you used a bit too much water in the mix or it dried too quickly. Next time, try a little less water and put a plastic sheeting around the pot as it’s curing to prevent the moisture from evaporating too quickly. Good luck!

    Basically Lime is way better. If strength is the issue for whatever application you're using. Just reinforce the lime with carbon and call it a day, hell throw in some fibers for even more strength. Because Portland Cement is complete trash. Portland's lifespan is smaller than your weener.
