Fire! Fire! Mamod fire engine

I bought a model Mamod fire engine and decided that as a 'mini' project I would make a few modifications such that it might more closely represent a prototype circa 1914-1920.

Angela bought the castings for this engine as a combined birthday/2002 christmas present. Took me a while to get started on the project, but in the end I am pleased with it.

There are a number of these pumps in Lincolnshire UK near where I live and I thought it would be interesting to make a version. My version however will be operated by a static steam engine not an electric motor (as the prototypes around here are).

Nice job Mr W. I have a Chingleese lathe and mill. The faceplate has bolt holes that are ok for M18... not the easiest to use. It's the model engineer that has to have cunning ways to hold . mount. Cut parts that most engineers and machinists would cry into their CNC's. this looks to be a nice build. stay well.
In my experience figuring out how to hold things is one of the most time consuming jobs, often accompanied by grinding a special tool to complete the part. Many thanks for your kind words.
I like it good job. Thanks for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
for what it is worth,,, i think you have done extremely well!!!!
Many thanks the flywheel was a challenge. I am well out of practise. Now machining the cylinder and will do a further vid when there is something to show
Edwin ,your too hard on yourself, not the easiest parts to machine them,I,s be pretty happy with that outcome !!!! Look forward to the next instalment . Well do e mate
Many thanks. Now working on the cylinder. Will post further vid when there is some useful progress. Having recently moved I can't find anything in the new workshop. LOL
Very nice work sir. Great setups. I imagine it was a challenge. Good job
Yes it was, but I got there and am reasonably happy with the result. Next job the cylinder.
Sometimes "good enough", is good enough! Thank you for sharing this project with us.
So true! I think a key attribute is when to say 'stop' before everything goes pear shaped. LOL
Well done work Ed. Looking forward to more instalments of this engine
Many thanks Mark. Having recently moved house I am struggling to find my equipment, but this build is part of me getting to remember where I put everything. LOL
Good work Edwin.
Many thanks Ben and may I say I enjoy your channel
@@edwinwhite933 You are very kind! I will be going to the Midlans Model Engineering exhibition on Friday. Are you going?
Sadly not Ben, but hope you have a great time
@@edwinwhite933 I will do my best!
I like this design because it hides the cross slide scale neatly under the slide. No junk hanging off to the side or rear. Unfortunately, the only "milling machine" Perhaps I can get a spare cross slide and cut it with the with my Rodney milling attachment.
A milling machine to cut the slot in the underside of the cross slide is essential in my view. Not a difficult job just needs a bit of care. My cheapo warco mill managed it with ease. thanks for your comment
If you don't have a separate mill then I see your difficulty with the Rodney. Can a mate do the cross slide for you?
Lovely video Ed
Many thanks!
Ah man. You know how to do things. Lovely trains
Thank you very much!
Sir how you made that molded or machining that parts of the Engine.
I am a self taught model engineer and have been machining for a long time. The unmachined castings for this engine were bought from a trade stand a long time ago. It was a most interesting engine to machine and fabricate and I made a few modifications using a very old copy of a book used to train marine engineer officers about 1900. I have no connection with the sea or any great knowledge of boats however. When I made this engine I did not have much camera equipment so my records are vague.
@@edwinwhite933 sir thank you very much for your reply. These words show how dedicated u are. U are a great and big salute from my side. Please spread ur knowledge for future generations.
Many thanks for your kind words. I will do my best to keep up the utube vids
It is a shame Mamod is not more. I liked their models.
Totally agree. They were simple 'toys' but very reliable and captured the essence of steam in an affordable way. A sad loss
Excellent video. Interesting the box shows a different - and to my knowledge - never seen design.
Thank you very much! I was not aware of that. I picked the model up a long time ago I think at a steam rally. It had very little running and the boiler in particular is very well built.
Are you willing to sell your Aster Shay, I love Shay
As prev response sorry no the engine is not for sale. Best wishes.
Are you willing to sell?
Sorry this is one of my favourite locos and like you I have an affection for logging locomotives so have no intention of selling. Thank you for your interest.
Looking good Ed. Well done with the video
Glad you enjoyed it. I have now test run a couple of trains and no derails so far. Will prob do more testing and then post a new vid of the track in action.
😂 you need a pond 😂😂😂 and a hobby mate
No more ponds for me. It does not do the trains any good at all when (not if) they fall in. LOL
Mince pies are not just for Xmas!
Sorry for slow reply. I Don't turn the computer on very often. So true re mince pies. xx
@@edwinwhite933 I've gone one step further dad. I've just bought advent calendars for sept, Oct, Nov and Dec 🤣

Brilliant made my day finding you. Thanks Edwin.
Awesome, thank you!
Awesome 😁 shame you're koto closer to document the McLaren P1 build!
Great stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it
Lovely to see another video All the best,
Same to you
Great video Ed, waiting for you to start a new workshop project??
Next project will be to try and create a garden railway. As someone pointed out - I moved house and now seem intent in making the new house look like the previous one. Still it gives me something to do!
Nice.
Lovely video-cheered me up!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant video Dad 😂
Thankyou. Shame I spelt the name wrong and mixed up Sauron with Saruman! Ha Ha
❤ inspirational
you are very kind - thankyou
Well done Ed, the thought of moving house alone is very brave, even more so when you have a ME workshop ! I am sure you will be back into model making soon.
More dumb than brave, but I hope to be back to modelling shortly
You have my admiration on undertaking such a project at your age. Dick B. USA
Thankyou. I am still not sure I have done the right thing, but getting the workshop in order is making me happier.
Workshop looking great! Looking forward to seeing the possible garden railway haha
Yeah, the railway is getting a good dose of looking and thinking - watch this space!
What a mess
Yes, but what fun!
It's a tubal-crane if you will
Ha Ha, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for brightening my day. Ed

Sorry for delay - moving house
What size 3 phase motor did you put on your machine?
Very nicely done. A solution. I like a good plan and repurposed machinery and tools
Many thanks
Nice idea. I like a plan. Good work
I wondered if the rack would work to prevent head rotating, now I know it will. It's a much more elegant solution than the round or square bar off to one side
Many thanks and I'm pleased the mod was helpful. Mine is still in use and works well within the limits of accuracy I need for my model engineeering. Ed
Extremely smart improvements but the most valuable one in my opinion is the rubber tires.Ive chipped so many wheels until I purchased tires from th UK and have been pleased ever since
The tyres certainly make a good difference. I have fitted them to most of my mamod engines although the models do spend most of their time on the shelf! Many thanks for commenting. Ed
add butane burner ,you can ajust the steam pressure , and stop the burner easly.
Many thanks Don. you are absolutely correct. Sadly my enthusiasm to mess about with this toy has diminished at this time.I do have a number of butane fired models. Have to admit however I do like spirit burners - somehow they are nearer the 'real' thing for me. I guess I am just a bit perverse! LOL Ed
Well done sir! With the cylinder drain tubes and simpling valve you have taken your build further than I did with mine. Mine runs better on steam than compressed air and I would imagine that yours would too. John. Bolton 9 Triple Expansion Steam Engine-First taste of steam.
Thanks John. I have never run the model on steam and doubt that I will. The model was built as a machining exercise in my bedroom back in the day. I am most definitely not a professional! Ha ha. Ed
Enjoyed this video and learnt a lot. Cheers from Oz.
Many thanks. The site is well worth a visit in my view and is a peep into the history of how some of our English industry actually worked. Ed
I would love to visit but I am in Australia @@edwinwhite933
Hi, yes that would be an awfully long journey. LOL. Ed
I love freelance locos like this, even better when it's a beefy tank loco - Three cylinders, what a sound! Best of luck on testing the new boiler, it looks incredible, and ought to get more surface area. What gauge is this? 45mm?
yup it is 45mm. Sadly as we also in process of buying and moving house it may take me a while to make meaningful progress. Have to see how it goes. Many thanks for your interest. Ed
ive found notching up the vaulve gear stops the engine rushong away woth the steam it will chuff away mile onmile ttfn&ty
Quite right, but I have not got to that stage of testing/running this loco. I don't think I have the valve gear totally properly set, but as I got the loco to run I have decided to leave fine tuning for later on.
When you tested it, it looked like the right cylinder was leaking or some place near it, my friend. Have you pressure tested it to the cylinders.
Well spotted. I believe I have now addressed that leak, but time will tell as they say. I have to get around to testing the boiler cos if that has a problem then little else will matter. LOL
Good luck, and it's a good-looking build thus far..
Many thanks for the compliment. To my eye the loco currently looks a bit of a shambles. I will never win any prizes for my builds. LOL
