Sansui 9090 - Vintage stereo review of a classic receiver from the late 1970's
One of the best Sansui receivers ever made. The 9090 was the TOTL in the x0x0 series with 110w of power, but in reality, the output was much higher. A powerful receiver loaded with features. This follows the 881 receiver line, but is before the G-9000 series. This ties the Yamaha CR-1020 on score.

    It is so hard to get over losing a family member. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Almost bought one of these back in 77-78 but decided to go with a Kenwood KA9100 integrated amp which I still have and it still works great. A great receiver and sometimes I wish I would have gone the receiver route back then. The deciding factor was that there wasn’t any decent radio stations in my neck of the woods and I preferred controlling the music I listened to at all times. Looking forward to sometime seeing your collection in person. Keep up the great work.

    Vintage audio service tech with 47 years experience here. Here's a trick to improve the sound of any Minimus 7 for free. Remove the tweeter and reverse the leads, then reinstall it. The manufacturer of these deliberately wired the tweeters out of phase in order to create a dip in the upper mids, so as to make the bass appear to be more powerful. Correcting this gives a much more natural midrange. And, this hack is reversible if you don't like it. The sensitivity is very low - about 82dB/1W/1M.

    Love this receiver. My dad brought a 9090 and some other equipment back from a trip to Guam when he was in the shipyard in the 70’s. I just got it back from the audio technician in my area (he cleaned all the pots and switches, no recap needed at the time). I have it hooked to his SP-7500X’s for now and it sounds so good. I grew up with this system and it is such a nice heirloom to have to remember my dad with. Great video!

    I love this series as well as the G series. Unfortunately the lower end models have a walnut grain sticker instead of real veneer. I’ve been reveneering them in real wood. Sansui is my all time favorite! Do you like Tandberg? They are my other vintage love.

    • @stereoniche

      Unfortunately, I have yet to own any Tandberg models. I would reveneer them too, if needed.

  • @sidesup8286
    @sidesup8286 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I suppose the G series came next, and so did the low distortion wars, where they started using more negative feedback. I had one of the upper echelon models of the G series. It was my first serious receiver. Very good tuner section, and the amp section I can't say too much about since I think I was treble happy and probably always had the treble turned way up. I think I remember the G 7500s sound being clean and fast, with treble detail emphasized over warmth. Sounded great with cassettes. It had a really fine sounding headphone input. I didn't realize that till about 3 years after I bought it, because before, I was using Audio Technica electret headphones, whose adapter box connected to the back of the receiver. I guess the black face also gave way to silver face with the G series of receivers. Your dog was so cute and you could probably just tell that he was a nice dog from even a block away. One of the rarest Sansui pieces is a top of the line cassette deck they once came out with. I believe it was the WD 11 Very rare to see one. It makes truly great recordings and plays back factory prerecorded cassettes with real finesse.

    • @sidesup8286
      @sidesup8286 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There was a dealer called The Audio Doctor from the midwest, back around 1980, who had a huge mail order clentele from the back of Audio magazine, and he sent out a monthly newsletter. He always referred to Sansui as San-sewer, as he thought their sound was unclean & had lots of grain from that nasty TIM distortion which increased from adding too much negative feedback, which they did to bring the total harmonic distortion numbers down in the watts and low distortion spec wars. People didn't even pay much attention to TIM specs, and it often was not even listed. Sansui never gained favor in audio salons which carried more serious equipment. Except for my cassette deck, Sansui would be a purely nostalgia purchase i only.

    • @sidesup8286
      @sidesup8286 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Actually before saying that, I should try to hear some vintage Sansui... I do remember enjoying my G Series receiver, but I realize that my sonic evaluation at that age was not very advanced. Just as there are overrated audio stuff, there also is stuff that is criticized that doesn't derve that degree of criticism.

    • @stereoniche
      @stereoniche 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      He (Mishka) was a real champ. Exceedingly smart, just got what you wanted to relay without much training and had a gentle, fun personality to go with it. Sansuis don't have a big following because they suck. They are well like, they are quite smooth, IMO, with a little color, but not overly. They add character to the music, but of course, that can vary greatly with the speakers attached. I have Billy Joel "Piano Man" spinning right now, sounds fantastic. I've only had one Sui cassette deck many years ago and it was in rough shape, a parts unit.

    • @sidesup8286
      @sidesup8286 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I don't think Sansui sucked. Calling them San-sewer was the other guy I mentioned. The G receiver I had, did have a very direct sound, that was enjoyable back then. A right on top of things kind of clarity. I don't know what I would think of it now. Some pieces of equipment are just sheer entertainers. Wouldn't mind hearing that sound again, now that my sonic evaluation is much more advanced than when just a teenager. Many years ago when I bought a vintage L series Luxman amp, it sparked a memory of my old Sansui's sound. The real coincidence is that a time later, I realized they were both made in the same year. Coincidence? Some Dynavector moving coil cartridges have been described as entertainers. There is a place for stuff like that. It all comes down to what you like.

    That is one of the most beautiful receivers I have ever seen. My son found me a Sansui 5050 in perfect mint condition for 75 dollars on Craig's list and I love it. It was very easy to clean the pots. Probably took 15 minutes. My lights are green and some pictures I see the lights look blue. I might have to look into changing lamps. I have done lamps on a Marantz before with a vellum paper change so I'll bet it won't be hard. I am sorry about your doggy. We still have our dogs ashes in an urn after about 15 years.

The speakers the Sansui was connected to were good for store bought, but the speakers the Toshiba was powering were custom built by my grandfather who owned a shop. I still have my G-4700. Note that I bought mine on September 3, 1979 from the Highland Appliance in Saginaw, MI. So you need to change your script as the receiver was definitely for sale in 1979. Great receiver. Still works swell. It's now paired with the Philips AF-829 I bought at a Tech Hifi going out of business sale in early 1981 and some vintage speakers by The Fisher I found in the basement of the condo my mom bought. Makes for a pretty good vintage-sounding system.

      It is a challenge to find exact start and end manufacturing dates, but the Orion Guide I picked up after this video shows they were made from 1980 - 1982 (a year longer than I thought when I made this video). So, perhaps they released some to market in late '79, but consider them to be '80 models (like cars). That Philips looks to be a very nice table. Philips is a bit under the radar for many, but they produced some very nice gear. There is a set of speakers they produced in 1990 that I would very much like to find.

    I had the option of the Elites TZ-9 or DSS-9 over 30 years ago. I loved both but the DSS-9s hooked me better. Years later, I traded a mint Pioneer SX receiver for another pair of the DSS-9. By that time the TZ-9 were discontinued so I did not have that option again.

    The first time I bought a receiver on eBay I saw a beautiful Harman Kardon that looked perfect. I bought it and the left front of the face plate was really wrecked. I didn't notice that in the photos, the left one inch of the face plate was sliced off in every picture. I should have looked more closely. The seller disappeared after that. At least it worked OK. BTW there is a place on line called Vintage Hi Fi Audio that sells beautiful reproduction Marantz face plates. Thank you for all of the great tips Scott!

    I can only imagine someone crooked coming to you place. It would be a thief's paradise. But it would be an enthusiast's paradise as well. If ebay detects someone trying to go around them they will kick you off ebay. I have bought a lot of things on ebay and still do. It is a good way to satisfy your post middle age craziness. Went through the watch thing, golf clubs and now stereo equipment. Buying stuff that I had in the past.

      Truth be told, crooks are too lazy as vintage gear is HEAVY, they would rather steal digital pictures and scam for the most part. The ebay scams are typically an email address embedded into a picture. Buying on eBay is mostly safe, it is challenging to use online services like FB or CL for shipping, danger!

    Lot of interesting and fun options. IMHO, first gen Klipsch Heresy speakers seem overpriced at $1k. You could almost get Cornwalls at such price. At which budget would you start considering a separate phono stage?

Advent Model 300 receiver (got one for $65) could be also a great option, especially given the reputation of its phono stage. For speakers, I would also recommend to check Ohm Walsh speakers like the model L or the FRS-11 for a different style.

    I have the m3000. Very similar but rubber surround so go a little deeper at cost of a couple of dB sensitivity. These are not normal speakers. My experiences: you need to wall or corner load them. In free space they are very dry. The bass is deep and no overhang, but actual level is low. With wall augmentation you’ll get 25hz and plenty of chest thump on rock and dance music. Use a solid state amp with plenty of power. 20w valves cannot handle these or play to their qualities unless you only listen to string quartets. Most 70s/80s rock and pop was monitored on these, they are not for classical music. They do poor material no favours. I also listen on quality head phones (DT 880s) and the voicing is identical. It’s true they will blow you out of the room on rock if you turn them up. Just like your headphones will, they do not soften with volume, they just get louder, seemingly without limit, the sound character not changing. These are not normal speakers. You’ll find it hard to go back, everything else sounds somehow fake, like a pale imitation.

    I've never been to the store, so take all this with a grain of salt. As I understand it from a friend who was formerly a long-time customer of the store, Lenny wasn't an audio technician but rather an enthusiast. He married the owners daughter, and then worked that position into store manager and all-around head honcho, at which point the focus of the store changed from being mostly a repair shop with sales on the side to more of a flipping operation where they paid lowball for vintage gear, then it would get cleaned up, a thing or two fixed and then re-sold for big money. The repair end of the operation got to be less and less, and the quality of the repairs fell below their former high standard. Their guarantees were often contested when customers brought their gear back for the same problem.

    Old drivers are/were generally inefficient and of poor quality (foam surrounds - facepalm). Look at the era in which horns, bass reflex, transmission lines, aperiodic, isobaric, jensen transflex, 6th and 8th order bass reflex (Bose) were born. It was poor quality, inefficient drivers that drove people to look for better solutions. Speaker technology has come a long way as well, with far better knowledge and materials that have come into play, and the use of materials that were unknown when speakers came into the mass market. I'd choose Scanspeak, SB Acoustics, SB Audience, Peerless, Stereo Integrity, Fostex, Purifi, Morel, Wavecor, Dayton Audio, Acoustic Elegance, CSS, Hybrid Audio (if they still exist), Seas drivers (to name a few), over any vintage driver. And coming from a car audio enthusiast's background, the subwoofer technology in particular has changed dramatically in the past 20 years or so. *That's why small speakers/drivers have become popular, because you just don't need a pair of Tannoy Wesminister's to have room filling sound any more.* If the day comes when I lose my mind, buy a pair of Shunyata speaker cables, along with a pair of Wilson Audio, Focal or anything designed by Andrew Jones ..... claim that McIntosh or Dan D'Agostino amps are; "Great value for money!" ... or do something even more egregious ... like considering buying a pair of vintage speakers ... my 1# ROT would be to stay away from anything with foam surrounds.

      Has art improved? You can certainly make the same argument against any category really, but you cannot subjugate nostalgia. If you like modern, no problem, enjoy it, but one cannot simply dismiss those that enjoy vintage cars, furniture, tractors, etc. because technology alone improved. BUT! I certainly agree with the foam surround issue. Prior to foam, treated paper/cloth surrounds were used and are still viable. Rubber surrounds were most likely available if engineered to use them, but alas, that is old history now. :-)
