Quick and easy cosmoline removal from a Mosin Nagant stock using heat
Here's a little contraption I built to pull the cosmoline from a Mosin Nagant stock using a hair dryer, 2 two-foot pieces of six-inch metal duct and a six-to-four-inch duct reducer. I think I spent around $10 to make it (I bought the hair dryer at a thrift store). I was hesitant about using mineral spirits or some other stripper on the wood itself. Works great. I shot this at night (obviously), so the lighting isn't all that great, but man, the cosmoline was bubbling on the stock.
I suppose I could have installed something else or cut some of the duct toward the bottom to blow heat up from another hair dryer, but I'm pretty sure that'd be too much heat.

5x4 gaucho knot

Made by request. I won't lay any claims to this knot's neatness or functionality, but hey, someone made the request. Personally, I think gauchos are better with more leads and bights, but that's just me.

Two bight Turk's head explained: Take Two!
มุมมอง 1.6K11 ปีที่แล้ว
This is an effort to finally upload a video without the mistake/correction in my last video. It piggy backs off Stormdrane's video on building a two bight Turk's head, but it explains the construction and theory better. For those of you who actually read this stuff sorry about the background music. I often listen to music while I'm tying, and for some reason, it didn't occur to me to turn that ...

5Lx4B Turks Head with Gridmaker

This is an instructional video on using KHWW.net's Gridmaker to create cylindrical Turks heads. To follow along with the run list, please go to www.khww.net/gridmaker/?width=153&height=96&parts=5&bights=4&swap_bight_order=true My apologies if I've gone through this too quickly. Please see the other videos in my channel for additional examples.
Great idea , however hot air go from down up , it will be more effective if you push the hot air from the bottom !
The thing is, I could fast forward your video, but then I'd miss out on enjoying your company. Your personality is what makes this video tutorial even better. Great vid bro.
How do you finish the darn thing? Tighten and finish the ends?
This is the BEST VIDEO that explains this knot! I have to first give you major kudos on going step by step and really explaining everything. Not only the middle placement but the transition on the ends! I'm a technical instruction writer by trade so I'm generally pretty tough on people with my expectations. I don't expect perfection but people if you're making an instructional video then do ALL the instructions. Ok sorry I get worked up with these things lol. Now some criticism: I agree with everyone else about the music...big thumbs down.
Dude, you made the simplest video to make one of these. I was just about to toss my cord aside because I`ve been trying to make one of these for a minute and never got anywhere. Thank you for making this is so easy and simple, two thumbs up to you.Your video made a difference in my book. Many a thanks from Sterling Heights,Michigan.
Why make it harder than it needs to be.?! Pringle can! Ditch the thumb tacks dude!
Ammonia ok?
Ingenious have to make me one
How much cord
Just tie the damn knot,!!!!!!!
Still one of my fav videos on this project. Making a couple tonight as gifts for friends.
Can you do a tutorial for 5 bite on a mandrel
www.khww.net/gridmaker/?width=... This link doesn't seem to be working And I think KHWW.NET is no more
This is where a Perfect Mandrel would work well. Unfortunately at this time they are hard to find.
First time I read the title I thought it said “Failed” and thought to myself; I’m not the only one who had trouble with Gaucho knots. Tried to tie a Gaucho interweave on a 7L6B and failed miserably, multiple times. Then went looking for a vid to show me the way. Tied it twice and still trying to understand how it works, not satisfied to do it by rote; I want to understand the signals in the knot so I can interweave expanded TH. Not my main point here; enjoy your vids. They are very informative. Thanks for taking the time to share. Donald
This was the best and easiest video to follow. Thank you!
talk to much
DaN then don’t watch
Finally found a system that works for me. Thank you.
This is genius :D
Thanks. Just seemed like something that would work. I was probably off a little on the "quick" part. I guess it took five hours or so.
Do you have a tutorial for a 7x6 turks head for the heel knot of a whip?
Can you show us a pineapple knots ? Thanks
Thank you. Semper Fi!
how can you filming at your forearm instead of Sailor Cross Knot .. dang it
What is this Turks head called if it wasn't tied as a cross... Thank you... Kenn
+Kenneth E Hockenberry Essentially,it's a long two-bight knot with extensions to the side. A four-bight version exists, but it's fairly difficult. I wouldn't want to imagine a six-bight version. Stormdrane has a great video on tying a long two-bight Turk's head.
+NinjaRv1 Do you know where the 4 bight cross video is... Kenn <><
I also have a Word document with the same sort of four-bight TH cross -- however, it requires some drilling into PVC pipe, printing a template, and putting pins into the correct positions. Let me know the best way to get it to you.
+NinjaRv1 Thanks I have that... I was hoping for something better... Have you tied the 4 bight TH cross...
I have, but it is far too long for any sort of video.
Tyle gadał, że spierdolił całe wideo (o_0).
www.knww.net/gridmaker don't exist
Honestly this is the best sailors cross video I have found and I gotta say I really appreciate the tutorial as I love this cross! Keep up the great work my friend.
complaining about people that don't show the whole process... Make the video over...
Nice video but it was confusing for those of us that are not as advanced to follow later in the video when you were working outside of the area the camera was recording. If you could remake another video that would be greatly appreciated
Looks nice.
Just wanted to say awesome tut I was able to follow it and finally learned how to make this cross thanks to you I do have a question would a 2 color sailors cross be possible
The video starts of great!, but then you forgot to keep the cross "in Frame", I could not follow you at that point, I could only assume! I cannot find any one else doing this cross and i would really like to make it. Please consider remaking this video.
I've considered remaking it. If it helps in the meantime, you can find static instructions in the video description.
BRO TY very much i love to make knots and to sail so this is like a gift. I send you a big big hug and plz continue doing this kind of videos. peace.
No problem. Thanks for the kind remarks.
Will this device work in Chicago winter weather?
I don't see why it wouldn't. The temperature doesn't have to be too great -- I've heard of people putting them in a hot car during the summer to sweat out cosmoline. I figure hot cars only get up to around 120-130 degrees or so.
Great video, rare to find for this project. Only problem was it was off screen so I couldn't always compare to make sure I was at the right place. Since you are the only one I found so far, any chance of doing it again?
It's possible. I was just watching it again a few days ago and it was pretty annoying when I went off camera. I have some time off coming up, so who knows?
Yeah ive done his 2 peg spool video. Coo.
What's the black and white bracelet you're wearing? Likes like a ring knot but with loads of bights.
It's one of those rainbow loom bracelets all the kids were making about a year ago or so. It's basically knitting on a loom, but with multiple bands. You can probably get one of the kits at a craft store, Walmart or Target, but they're kind of out of style now (if you're concerned about that sort of thing). You can replicate the effect with two-pin or four-pin spool knitting. There are a ton of different ways to do it. Stormdrane has a pretty good tutorial on three-pin spool knitting on his page, and just searching "spool knitting" or "spool knotting" on here will turn up a ton of examples. You can make your own spools, and craft stores have them for sale as well. I've made some out of 1/4-inch PVC pipe and a couple of nails. Give it a shot...I don't know anyone who hasn't liked the results.
Hey bro how do you get grid maker to generate gauchos? And can it generate herringbone interweaves? All I can get it to do is generate regular Turks heads
In the coding, instead of \/, use \\//. Also, use www.igkt.net/beginners/gridmaker.php Same thing, but on a site that works.
what about herringbone? Any code for it?
Herringbones are interweaves, so there's really no code for it. However, I think this link should do it for you. freakinsweetapps.com/product/custom-ring/
As well, there's a paid program out there called Ariane that'll do pretty much any multi-strand knot, globe knot, or anything else you can think of. Here's an image of some of the different types of cylindrical knots. media-cache-cd0.pinimg.com/736x/52/e6/93/52e69301c3341025569909acdae9bb91.jpg
Here I am, making a comment on a two-year-old comment. My apologies...I didn't really track this stuff well. For gauchos, the coding is \\// instead of \/.
Saw your faired video you're hilarious. By the way the only thing that is actually a gaucho only, that is tied as a gaucho knot is a headhunters knot. What you're doing in this video is a gaucho interweave. :) also the gaucho button knot which is also interwoven.
would you happen to have a video on how to follow the guide from the computer. the screen is so bright i really can't see it clear. Pleas advise. i am a beginner at this. i started while i was deployed and would love to conitue so i can send them to my buddies that are still deployed. can you help
Sorry for the late response. I posted a link to the grid in my original comments, but that site has since been taken down. You can find the grid here: igkt.net/beginners/gridmaker.php?width=268&height=211&parts=13&bights=4&swap_bight_order=true
Thank you so much.
Great tutorial Phillip. Thanks for the mention also.
Well, sure -- you shipped a bunch of cord out to me pronto, which allowed me to get a ton of projects done on short notice. Least I could do.
Phillips Knotwork No comprendo como te has liado tanto. Básicamente se trata de hacer una cara, hacer la otra cara, y duplicar todo; y hacer el remate. Gracias por tu buena voluntad.
I've been looking for a video on how to make this and this is by far the best video I've seen....u made it so easy to understand looking foward to using ur other videos too, ur awesome lol
Thanks, Aaron.
Phillips Knotwork Do you have a video on finishing this knot? we mean on the same jig, finishing it, all the other runs, two more three more etc..? or did you just untie it and start another project with the paracord cool video too by the way.
Well, to make additional runs, you just follow where the line continues all the way through. When you think you've made enough runs (I usually stop at three or four; I think more is overkill; if you have to use more runs than that, you should probably start the knot with more leads in the first place), pull the pins out, carefully slide the knot off the mandrel, put it on the final piece, and slowly tighten. Begin at the start, pull a little slack out, then keep going all the way around the knot. If you take too much out at once, it won't come out straight. It should take at least three or four times around to pull all the slack out.
Pourquoiil n'y a pas de traduction en français
Good idea, Thanks I'm going to use this for my C&R stocks.
Great video and explanation
Thanks for explaining how to use gridmaker to make gaucho knots. I never could figure out what the coding parameter was used for and why it had a "V" in it, just now see its not a V. Is there still a tutorial on how to use gridmaker? At one time there was a video on knww.net but I never saw it because I was always on my tablet and they used some format my tablet didn't like. Now that that page is gone I can't find it.
Not that I know of. KHWW went down for a bit and restructured.
Since my post I found the advanced grid maker that does other knots and multiple colors. Have you ever seen it? And if so have you figured it out? I could try to contact the maker of the page but not sure if I have enough knowledge to ask a proper question.
More or less. I haven't used it for any of the *advanced* stuff. The creator's name is Tim Allwine. You can find the older version at igkt.net.
Great Video Phillip. Easy to follow and understand. And yes, Slipknot rules!
Agree on all.
Thanks you for sharing how to make this cross , great video easy to follow.
Knots Head World Wide has resigned their site and your link no longer works and I can't seem to find where they moved it to. I have found another site that has the same kind of grid maker page. Its at the International Guild of Knot Tyers.
Yep, I've had to use it a couple of times. I'm in touch with the creator of KHWW.net. The site is up, but Gridmaker hasn't been arranged on the site yet as far as I know. You can download it here, though: khww.net/file/all
Phillips Knotwork Yea I have that on my PC at work but at home I use a tablet to follow along. Not sure if it work as a offline web page.
Please do.
