10m Air Pistol: Training During Lockdown - the Importance of Dry Firing
So half the world is in lockdown, I’m in lockdown, and if you’re watching this, you’re probably in lockdown too. Many of us can’t get to a range right now. But do you really need a range to keep yourself in top shooting condition? In this video, I tell you why all you really need is dry firing.

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to have it appear just slightly wider than the front sight, but it's personal preference. If you have trouble gauging whether the front sight is in the centre of the rear sight, probably consider narrowing the rear sight.

    I used to shoot with a blinder. Now, trying to aim without one. I note that front sight is sharper, but many times I have noted that I don't see the black dot and rear sights (or it is very much blurred). Must admit I have not yet tried live firing with both eyes open yet.

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the rear sight might not be so clear with both eyes open. The light from an illuminated target can help with the contrast. One thing I like to do is make the rear sight gap very small, so it appears just slightly larger than the front sight. That way, it's easy to align even if it's not clear. On the other hand, the target should always be slightly blurred if you are focusing correctly on the sights. Keep it up!

    I go to a range once a week, training usually between 2-3 hours. Your vid is excellent. My big problem is relaxing...and the trigger...It would be great if I could do this at home, also for the muscles. I don't get elbow pain, just the usual bicep...and then of course to take a little break....But unfortunately I don't have a pistol of my own, only the one I always use luckily just for myself at the range ( a donation), as the only woman using the pistol there. (I can't afford my own).

    Why does using a dot on the wall defeat the purpose?

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The purpose of dry firing is to focus internally, to perform the routine using only internal feedback, ie proprioception. We include the pistol in this ‘internal’ system, so we use visual feedback from sight alignment, but nothing beyond that. Aiming at a dot on the wall means using an external reference, which shifts focus away.

    • @CandidZulu
      @CandidZulu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wonghanxuan7620 So dry firing does not train you to hold more steady (smaller area of oscillation), just the release of the shot?

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CandidZulu of course dry firing improves stability. Stability comes from strengthening our muscles and fine motor control, and coordinating our breathing and heart rate. This will naturally happen as we perform our routine over and over again and focus on the feedback we get from our body.

    As u said that lest the elbow area hurts after dry firing, we need to work on our bicep muscles….right now m holding/dry firing for continuous 70-80 min….while doing this i dont rest my hand anywhere i just hold and take it down straight (barrel pointing towards feet) at the end….during practice i dont feel any pain but after finishing when i take pistol out of my hand, me elbow just gets jammed…i need to use my second hand for folding/unfolding my shooting arm….when i do some stretching the pain goes away after 5-7 min….m just worried that am i doing it right? am i over stressing my arm? i hold for around 25-30 sec at a time in a single breath and rest for 5-7 sec…. awaiting a reply from ur side thnx

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think yes, that continuous load might not be good for your arm. I would suggest taking your hand out every 10 shots or so to shake it off, and a longer break every half an hour. If you feel pain in your joints you should take one or two days off. Also, it is good to have a separate routine for strength training. Your normal match routine which you normally practise might look like average 15 sec up, 30 sec rest, efficient and well-paced. A strength training routine might look like 60 sec up, 20 sec rest, more intense.

    Hi, I learnt that "front sight post" is changeable. (1).So, Broad width or narrow width front sight post is better? (2). Is there any restrictions for maximum and minimum front sight WIDTH? (3). Thirdly, is there also restrictions on height of front post?) (4). Can I modify the front post by using 'file' to narrow and minimize it, if I don't have access to narrower front post to purchase? (5). Will the self "file modified" front post be allowed in major tournaments? (6). Fourthly on, REAR sight - is there restrictions on 'maximum width' and 'minimum width' of "U" in rear sight? (i.e., the gap on rear sight from which we align the front post). Thank you, anticipating your reply.👍👍❤️

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are no restrictions on the size or shape of your sights except that they must be ‘open’ - that is the sights cannot be holes. However, ideally the front sight is around the same width as the black circle of the target, to make alignment easier. Ideally the rear sight is just slightly wider than the front sight, also to make alignment easier. You should be very careful to keep the edges flat if filing manually, and you’ll probably need to apply some form of rust protection after that. I would question the need to adjust the height of the sights because they are designed to be adjustable around the target area at 10m. If your aiming area is so far off the target that you have maxed out the rear sight adjustment in some direction, or your weapon does not shoot straight, those are more fundamental problems I would address first.

      @@wonghanxuan7620 Thank You so much. I learn a lot by watching and reading your every reply again and again.👍👍👍 (You reminded me to "keep the Edges of front post 'Flat' while filing". By this, (1). Do you mean that FLAT front post will give us better sighting on the target. (2). Or, if the "TOP flat surface" front post is accidentally made 'pointed' or 'semi pointed' will we be disqualified? (Is pointed tip "front post allowed in major tournaments?). Thank you....anticipating your reply👍

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s no rule that the front sight should be flat, but it simply makes it easier to check that your sights are aligned - i.e. the tops of your front and rear sights form a nice, nearly continuous straight line.

    Hi, do we need to be rock steady (without any sight movement) while doing holding exercise? e.g., if I can hold 60 seconds, do I need to hold it without any movement in pistol aim. (Or is it that, it's ok even if I shake my hand a little bit, as long as I can hold my arm straight for 60 seconds?). Thank you, anticipating your reply.

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re doing 60s hold / 30s rest sets, I’d say maintaining your normal stability until the 5th set or so would make you a pretty strong shooter. If you can do 10 sets with a straight arm, I think that’s enough stamina.

Can you analyse, how Olympic shooters these days are able to achieve above 585 qualification scores. (What is the secret?) I guess it is their pistol technology and better pellets. Thanks..

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s no secret, and it’s not equipment - the pistol men’s world record was set more than a decade ago with an LP10, and shooters have been hitting 580+ long before that. Professional shooters train for hours almost every day, including physical training. Physical fatigue during their 60 shots is not an issue for them, they can repeat their shot routine as many times as they need to. Their physical condition and muscle memory is refined to the point that shooting a 10 is the norm - in a good training session they can shoot series after series of 10s. This level of technique and stamina is not achievable for those of us who can only train a few times a week. The only reason why these shooters don’t have perfect scores is lapses in concentration and other disturbances to their mental condition.

    Which pellet is best?

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is really no ‘best’ pellet. RWS, JSB, H&N, Qiang Yuan, are all used at the highest level. But the same manufacturer will sell pellets in different grades, of which ‘Match’ grade has the highest uniformity and thus the best consistency. The highest grade pellets are usually packed in foam trays with each pellet held in its own hole so there is no possibility of pellets hitting one another during transportation.

    • @wonghanxuan7620
      @wonghanxuan7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general the recommended velocity is around 150-160 m/s; a higher velocity means the pellet spends less time in the weapon and is less affected by weapon movement. For pellet weight, to some extent it is personal preference. The pellet weight and weapon velocity together will determine the amount of recoil (P=mv). Some shooters like a larger recoil to give them more feedback on their shot, because it becomes more obvious when there is unintended motion at the point of trigger. Other shooters (like me) prefer less recoil because it helps maintain concentration for follow through. However, the most important consideration at the highest level is precision. There is usually some combination of pellet brand, weight, diameter and velocity that will give the tightest grouping for a particular weapon. So elite shooters will clamp their weapon in a vice and shoot series of different pellets to find the best combination. If you go to a manufacturer to do this you can buy a large quantity of pellets from the same batch that gives your weapon the best performance. Nevertheless, I have found that even with random cheap pellets, the score variation with my LP10E was seldom more than .3 points, so we usually don’t worry about it unless we’re going for a major competition :)
