This might be good bye from Shelvington. :(
This might be my last video from Shelvington. I really has taken me 5 days to get a video recorded. This is the first video I have made without getting emotional as this layout really does mean a lot to me, each area has special meanings and to 'decide' to sell off everything, it really has been a difficult decission. Things in my life have changed and are changing. Hopefully for the best, thats what I keep telling myself anyway!
Those of you that know me personally know what is going on. I won't publish it on here, thats not fair.
I would like to thank the very special people in my life right now (You know who you are. X) Thank you for being there for me :) Onwards and Upwards.
If you like my videos, please consider buying me a coffee! It is very much appreciated.

    Some nice pickups there. Sometimes you can get lucky with those "New old stock" buys. I bought a dozen Hornby Mk1 coaches for A$100 the lot a couple of years ago. I wasn't expecting it but they really had never been opened. The old railroad stock is good enough for me, so I was a happy chappy. Cheers!

    It's an enjoyable video, Andy. We've been over to Monsville Railways and subscribed. It's good to hear that your back is getting a little better . The video with the 060 goods train, on Monsville Railways made me smile, I had that set when I was a kid, and I've still got the little green loco, and the two wagons and guards van in a shoebox in the wardrobe. I will have to dig it out, I doubt it will run but it could be posed on Dylington, and who knows it may appear on a video at some point... Cheers James 🙂👍

      I can't stress how much I love that HST! I think it's now my favourite loco, certainly my favourite livery. While I was cleaning the coach wheels, I noticed they felt smoother to the touch, and out of curiosity I pushed them along the track, and well, the difference is very noticable as you have seen. Most of my rolling stock is old so I try to clean the wheels before using. Cheers, Andy

    Hi Andy, Thanks for testing these various wheel cleaning methods, the results were very interesting. It appears the best results are from using IPA and polish on cotton buds. The dremel is noisy and cumersome to use. I am surprised the Ultrasonic didnt seem to be very good as they normally break down dirt quite well. Cheers, Paul.👍👍

    • @Shelvington_Railway
      @Shelvington_Railway 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Paul. I was genuinely supprised by the ultra sonic cleaner, I really thought that would have worked a lot better. Maybe with a better machine the results would have been different? Nice one. The old-school coloured sawdust for scatter. It still works. For soil I use, well, soil from the garden sifted very fine.Also, a great alternative for ballast is crushed walnut shells. They are available very cheaply and apparently are used for polishing metal. A bit of paint of whatever colour you need and voila! Cheers!

      Hi. I experiment with soil, but our soil at home looks fake when its on the layout! Good tip about the crushed walnut shells. I didn't know there was such a thing! I have just looked on the internet, and 1 KG of crushed walnut shells would cost me around $30 NZD. New Zealand is a great place to live, but it very expensive!! Cheers, Andy

    Greetings from the St Louis, Missouri, USA area. TH-cam suggested your channel to me today. I love that so much on your layout has personal meaning to you. What is the hobby scene like where you live? Are there train shows and model railroad clubs, supported by model train shops? Or are you a "lone wolf" modeler relying on the internet for your shopping and interaction with fellow hobbyists?

    • @Shelvington_Railway
      @Shelvington_Railway 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for your kind comments. The hobby scene here in NZ is very small. There are only a handful of model shops here too, 10 or so. I think the nearest one to me about a bout a 7 hour round trip! There are a few local clubs, I am a member of one of them, but due to work, I don't get to go over to our club house very often. My supplier of choice was Hattons in the UK. We don't have eBay over here instead we have TradeMe which is just NZ buyers and sellers. Through buying and selling I have made quite a few hobby 'friends' and since starting this TH-cam channel, I have made quite a few more. Cheers, Andy

      Hi. I think sand would work for the wagon loads, not so much for the walls. It might be too fine? Worth trying though. Cheers, Andy

    Great comparisons there Andy, for light cleaning i use cotton pud with IPA. Heavily dirty ones i use T cut on a cotton bud. Really like the ultrasonic cleaner

      Ah yes. T Cut. I remember T Cutting an entire Alfa 147 once! I would have used T Cut if I could get it, but sadly I can't find it here in NZ, well you can but it has to be imported. A 350ml bottle works out to be $146 (About 70 quid!) Cheers, Andy

    Good comparisons Andy. IPA or Polish on a cotton bud seems to be the best result. Like you, I'd shy away from sand paper. If you create microscopic grooves in the surface they will fill with muck and make cleaning more of a chore down the track. IPA and a cotton bud seems less harsh and would be my choice. 👍 The ultrasonic cleaner is good for cleaning electrical contacts etc. OO Bill uses one but seems to set his to half an hour for cleaning. Happy modelling

      IPA or Polish I think is the way to go. Certainly for me. Someone suggested T Cut for heavy dirt removal. Interesting about the ultrasonic cleaning. Maybe I just have a cheap and nasty one!! It only has a limited timer. (4 minutes max). I could keep repeating the process, but just a soak in water did the same job for me. Cheers, Andy

    Mostly I just use IPA on cotton buds. If they are really gungy I might try to scrape the buildup off then soak in IPA and rub with a cotton bud. On metal wheels, I have sometimes used a dremel with a brass wire wheel if the IPA doesn't do the job. Of course, clean up with IPA and a cotton bud afterward. I try and avoid abrasives and polishes as far as possible because of micro-scratches. I can't tell you whether what I do is best or even good. Works for me though so that's what matters to me. Cheers!

      Good point about micro scratches. Would a brass wheel leave scratches though? I've not got one, so I can't comment. I really didnt see a difference with soaking the wheels in IPA, as opposed to just going straight in with a cotton bud. The one method that did supprise me though was plain water! I think everyone has their own way and thats important to remember. These wheels were all new to me and in all honesty even my oldest rolling stock's wheels have never looked this bad so I dont imagine these wheels will ever get so dirty again! Thanks for your comments. Cheers, Andy

      @@Shelvington_Railway It probably may, but if used gently I'd think it would be better than a sanding wheel or similar. My thinking is brass is a lot softer than steel, so hopefully it will not do much damage.
