I currently use the CARSON MM-300 60-120X LED MicroBrite Plus pocket microscope for examining tiny insects. However, its shallow depth of field makes it unsuitable for larger insects. So, I’m considering getting the CARSON MM-450 20-60X model. The specifications indicate that the MM-450 has a wider field of view, but there’s no mention of its depth of field. I’m wondering if the MM-450 also offers a greater depth of field?

Mercari or the local auction site seem to be flooded with old Olympus and Nikon microscopes including lense sets and often even nice wooden boxes. Way under $100 including shipping. Do microscopes go bad with time? Is it risky to buy these 20 or 30 years old models?

THat is the same classic thing of zoom in a digital camera. the concept of zoom means nothing in real digital imaging. There is a reason why we call rescaling... and we only use zoom when we are talking of a system with an input and an output (display). Also that is why in digital sensors what matters is RESOLUTION of the sensor.
