    i played ff 11 for 5 years. i no longer have access to my characters. was thinking of buying the game and starting over. is the game worth starting over again now? is it still everyone leveling by themselves or is it back to where you need to level in parties again?

    I played this game to death back when level 75 was the level cap. I got to the point where I was working on job #4 (BLM, WHM, RDM, and then BRD) and eventually with the HNMs taking all day it just felt like a job. Had a great time building all the RDM subs, the early game with even a halfway competent party was amazing. There was also a great zen of the RDM buffing cycle that I really miss. I mean, I was totally /that/ BLM that would see the enemy at 20% health, blink, stone skin, and absolutely dump damage on it until it died, rotating blink and stone skin to tank as needed at the end. Don’t forget the echo drops! Good memories, but just way too much of a time sink.

    First of all, I wanted to say thank you for all those great content you created around Final Fantasy XI! I can't tell how happy it makes me to learn more about one of the Final Fantasy I unfortunately never got the chance to really play. As you said so well at the end of this video, I have been within those people that discarded FFXI and for me the reason was mostly because it is an online game... But I have to say, I felt like I missed out quite a lot of things from the FF lore by not playing FFXI; and I could tell this from Opera Omnia Dissidia that gave some much more weight to a few characters of FFXI such as Iroha, Selth'teus, Eld'narche, Kam'lanaut, Aphmau, Prishe, Shantotto, Lion, Lilisette, Arciela and so many others! And the fact I could watch your reviews and somehow get even more sense of it all, really made me want to play FFXI. I always adored the music from the game, and I feel Naoshi Mizuta is underrated while being as much of a music genius as all other composers from Square Enix games. I had the opportunity to barely play FF11 a few years ago but didn't go that far. Your videos really make me want to go back to Vana'diel and explore this fantastic land that I barely visited. My biggest wish from Square Enix is that they remaster/remake the game to be more accessible (but as an option, not as a replacement) because I really believe it would help provide more interest to the game for those that never had the chance to even try it.

      @@tossashow Thank you for the kind feedback, it really means a lot! I do truly wish for a remake/offline remaster too. The love and care that went into this game is just too great to leave alone. There's no shame in not being able to play FFXI. While I cannot recommend this game enough, MMOs may not be for everyone. Especially in FFXI's case due to the immense challenge of the sign up process and the learning curve. But I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed learning about this game!

    As a FF fan playing XI back in 04-06 and being very interested in the story, it was very frustrating how hard it was to find people to do some of the fights, especially for those that didn't have endgame content locked behind. But also, it was so satisfying beating those fights. Endgame content is interesting and fun nowadays, but it has moved away from alliance content, so that's not particularly good for linkshells, but it's easier to find 5 other people to fill a party.

  • @Junomaster2006
    @Junomaster2006 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    No, playing FFXI is not essential at all as the gameplay did not age well, & the story is almost non existent or forgettable since the pacing is so far & between that most players will forgot the plot/goal of the story.

    • @vicenarian340
      @vicenarian340 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Junomaster2006 It sounds like you haven't watched the video. Here's a TL;DW: 1. The entire main story is now soloable. 2. The game is not the time sink it once was. 3. Aside from slog of the base game and 1st expansion, FFXI has one of the best overall stories in the main FF series. 4. From the combat to the side content, there are a lot of awesome gameplay systems. It's definitely worth playing.

      @@vicenarian340 I''ve got back in the game & played it last year (after a 10 year hiatus). I was so tired of playing the game because the fact that a guide is required to progress through the game. Even then I was still lost. Calling out the trust each time I'm practically in the new zone was time wasting. All dungeons look exactly the same too, thus getting even more lost w/out a guide.

    • @vicenarian340
      @vicenarian340 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Junomaster2006 You're right, the clucky UI can definitely waste some time. But when people say FFXI is a time waster, they mean that (at one time) people spent 400 hours grinding for a Relic Weapon, not that you have to press 2 buttons and wait 14 seconds to summon trusts. Not only that, you don't have to summon trusts for each new zone, you only summon them for level-appropriate zones that you plan on fighting in. Otherwise, you just summon a mount, which is much faster. As far as the need to use guides, FFXI was designed to force you to interact with the game's community. Now, the most effective way to do that is to follow the community guides. This is the worst-aging attribute of the game, but that doesn't detract from the game's amazing story. You say that all the dungeons look the same, and that the story is non-existent. So, it's safe to assume that you never made it to the second expansion? The base game of FFXI acts a bit like a filter. The story is barely present, you have to deal with all the clunky mechanics while you aren't at lvl 99, ect. But once you start getting into the story, it proves to be one of the best FF experiences in the series.

    I'm sorry to tell you FF11 is not made for brand-new players. Beginning with the install, to setting up an account, to arriving in a world with MANY++expansions in place , to the outdated controls. FF11 refuses to adapt to an old aged game, by re-creating progression servers so new fresh blood can learn it from scratch with an interactive population. The FF11 community eats its young by fighting with emulated servers that are trying to keep this game alive for the newer FF generation so they can transition to FF11 LIVE. I personally played on Asura since day 1 of the server and made it to mid 30's.. coming back to this monstrosity of game is quite overwhelming and not very friendly

    • @vicenarian340
      @vicenarian340 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Laber77 I'm a new-ish player though (started in 2022), and I would understand this issue better than anyone. So, I wanted to address some things you brought up. Progression servers are even less new-player friendly than Retail. On retail, there are a lot of people willing to help you out. The story is easy to solo, and Ambuscade makes the endgame very accessible. The abundance of content also made it exciting for me starting out once I realized just how good the game is. Progression servers still require an old-school gameplay loop, which is incredible for preservation’s sake. But not for accessibility. I realize the new-player experience has an enormous learning curve. But the game's content is so good, it's worth getting through that learning curve. As far as the FFXI community eating their young, that hasn't remotely been my experience. Throughout my time playing, I've had dozens of complete strangers help me expecting nothing in return. I joined a linkshell that is dedicated to helping new players, and a couple guys on there helped new players with V1VD Ambuscade runs just because they wanted to see people enjoy the game.

    I'm a final fantasy fan, I must say. there is no game that will ever beat the fun i had in the lvl 75 cap era of ff11. Man... I made friend with people all over the world, even gamed with Japanese people wo do not speak English and we all enjoyed each other’s company. The game felt like a real live world where everyone needed each other to progress. Never had such communion with diverse people all over the world. This is how diversity is supposed to be, it was there all along, not the forced modern kind. I haven’t even started about the game mechanics and the story… o boy I truly mis the old ff11 times. Even after 20 years when I hear the music, I think about valkurum dunes, the pain of lvling down after lvling up. The moments of sacrifice for the party , the hard punishments that I loved. It brought out true danger that you did not face alone that no game ever managed to generate. Games now are a shadow of ff11 back then. I played ff14, but it does not have what 11 has. So going back to 11 to check it out. I did not know it was still up. The warning that you should not to forget the people in your real live, when you started the game, was really needed haha. It really hit a true spot there.

As far as respecting your time, I didn't find that to be the case, save for 2 Windurst exceptions. At least, my experience with Nations and ARR were similar. ARR is a bit more quest heavy, while Nations requires more exploration. But the base games/expansions take about the same length of time for both games.

    Played it for a short while in 2006. I was really excited so I naively bought all the available expansions at once, thinking I was ready to get lost in my very own FF experience. One of the biggest wastes of money of my life. Even my housemates who convinced me to try it never once sounded like they were enjoying it; all they did was complain. Meanwhile I had so much trouble navigating the atrocious user interface that I had trouble shutting down my subscription and paid for extra time during which I never even logged in, and unsurprisingly Squenix refused to budge when I disputed those charges. I'm told it's much better now (what you said about soloing the story definitely wasn't true in 2006) but I'm also told that even "better" is still mostly "autoattack to level 99." FF14 was a considerably better game but still gave me the same drama with the subscription management just a couple of years ago. Never again.

Steam today notified me that FFXI Ultimate Edition went on sale below $10 so I feel extremely incentivized to start playing. I played 11 back in my college years in the early 2000s and story was definitely not what people played it for. You had to pray that other players around your level were around and available to help you through a dungeon or just level up against the mobs in the environment. Every mob hit as hard as an A Rank from FFXIV and getting a level or two a day was considered a miracle. It took a very long time to level and dying would lose all your progress. What hurt most is that it was hard to gear up, as all the gear on the market would be insanely overpriced so you couldn't get your gear appropriate for your level and people won't bring you with them into the next dungeon for that level range. Old FF11 was rough. Shadowlord was also considered the end game and there was nothing past that when I played.

    They really changed the game if anything is soloable in FFXI, and the story was minimal if non-existent when it first came out.

    I agree with your point about FFXI hardly getting the credit it deserves for influencing future Final Fantasy games, but moreso, it never gets enough credit for its influence on fiction in general lol. Pretty much every anime that involves an mmo ALWAYS pays direct omage to FFXI.

    XI is skipped mainly because it's not "anime" like XIV. As a XIV player im happy i played XI, having a blast and BLU mage is awesome.

    • @gregtroyan
      @gregtroyan หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think XI is skipped less because of anime influences and more because of the circumstances around its release. XII is arguably the least anime-like of the mainline games and lots of folks played that one. XI came out at a time when mmos were still relatively new to the market, it was incredibly pricey just to start the game, and the monthly fee was turn-off for a lot of players. In addition to all of that, it was a massive gameplay overhaul, a huge timesink and incredibly difficult. Add that to the fact that internet speeds were slower back then (a lot of folks still using dial up) and that an alternative in X-2 was offered to the fans, skipping XI became very easy, and because so many skipped it at the time a lot of folks never went back to it because it has a reputation of being insanely difficult and having next to no story. The former is somewhat true, the latter is false, but hopefully with videos like ours we can counter this inaccurate view of the game and bring more people on board.

      @@gregtroyan true but I think the anime aspect and the fact that you can wear modern streetwear attracted a looot of peopleto XIV. There's a huge erp scene and people love making drama and treating this game like second life or vr chat. In XI people are here for the game more than the roleplay and its partly because of the artstyle. There's certainly an erp scene in xi but I haven't seen it blending into the game. I thinks its amazing how you read and reply to comments even on different channels.

    • @gregtroyan
      @gregtroyan หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@VincenzoMGREX There is some modern streetwear in XI, but it's far limited in comparison to XIV's. I think the huge erp scene in XIV is able to be maintained because of the game's popularity and easier gameplay, setting a lower barrier to entry along with a financial incentive for those who make money off of erp. It's easier to make money if there's a lot of potential customers and most XI fans are focused on actually playing the game as opposed to purely the social aspect. So, it makes sense the XIV one is bigger because the game itself is bigger. I try to reasonably keep up with comments on both my own personal channel and on other channels whenever I do a collab. I don't get notifications on comments when from my collab videos on other channels, but I manually check them maybe once every other week to make sure I get back to people. I'm glad you appreciate it! : )

    Amazing review. I just started playing again 2 days ago. I've been loving watching / listening to videos like these while i'm working. Gets me so excited to get home and play. I never beat FFXI yet, but am WAY more excited for the story. I agree with you that the music is top notch. I really love Windurst music so much i always play MIthra or Taru because of it! my first character ever was a Taru from Sandy though. Sandy music also really good

    Beautiful video. As inaccessible as the CoP missions originally were, I'll never forget the thrill of finishing the missions and joining the few elite on the servers with the Tamas/Rajas ring. Me and 5 other friends worked harder than I could have ever thought. I think we wiped on some of the fights over 30 times. We leveled new jobs just to finish the story quests together. I haven't had that sort of experience in an MMORPG ever since.
