  • @bogdax
    @bogdax ปีที่แล้ว

    I've survived this year's Burning Man, and for whoever reading this I would like to share my thoughts: 1. Under direct sunlight, shiftpod gets hot, and a lot! The thing that cools your shiftpod the most is shade. Don't rely on your camp providing you with one (as I did). You may be on the fringe of your camp's shade structure and it will suck. Bring your own aluminet. Also, I did not try the pool noodle setup shown in the video, so maybe it will be enough, but I won't risk it next year, and will do both. 2. The evaporative cooler was super effective. However, It leaks, as the water condensates on the cooler's grid, so make sure it's in a small container. We used a plastic box's lid for it. 3. The soda can ventilation setup was alright, but it's definitely not enough to cool the shiftpod. I did not test whether shade + evaporative cooler would be enough, but I'm not sure whether the ventilation setup is as important as the evaporative cooler. Especially considering that 2 soda can fans consume 26-28 Watts, while 1 cooler (1 was enough for us) consumes only 8-10. 4. All ventilation setup (2 soda fans on max, 1 cooler) + 4 plugged-in devices (2 phones, 2 power banks) consumes around 70 watts. We had a 110W solar panel, so we were good. 5. I don't know how, but I'll look into a device to dry the shiftpod from the inside for the next year. When it was raining for >1 day, it sucked a lot, because despite our best efforts, everything inside the tent was damp. On the other hand, my tent did not leak at all, as my fellow campers' tents, most of whom had to use cups or other objects to drain water from their tents. 6. I don't think people show it often on their videos, but shitpod comes with a metalic "central pole" - it helps to stabilize the tent in high wind conditions, and to prevent the ceiling collapsing in snowy conditions, or when your camp's shade structure does not drain water, so it sags on the top of your shiftpod:)

    Hello everyone! Quick question, I have this same Shiftpod2 and I'm interested in potentially having circular fans in the ducts shown at 14:02. If it's 114 degrees at Burning Man, wouldn't we want to blow this 114 degrees air out of the tent, instead of in? Wouldn't inward airflow from these fans bring dust into the tent as well? Just trying to double check the logic here. May I please ask which circular fans were used for this? Did they get the job done? Thanks in advance! Cheers! 🙏

      There's an arm on the fans that I used to secure the vent holes with and I just tightened the sleeves over the fans. To be really secure, fixing a rubber band or bungee ball over the vent-sleeves and around the fans would do the trick a.co/d/9NWAunI

    Thank you so much for the videos - they've been so helpful! Wondering if your two small Fancii fans (in the air conditioning holes) needed to have filters on them or if they brought in dust etc. Thanks again!

    • @stationjeckmode9107
      @stationjeckmode9107 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a good idea to filter out all the openings to lessen the dust, but the dust is still unavoidable. By the end of the burn, I had layers of dust caked at the bottom of the buckets, but I still had cool air inside. Keeping the shiftpod minimally dusty is pretty easy if u filter the windows and keep the doors zipped. If u do make swamp coolers, all windows and doors should stay closed except for a hand-sized amount of the door unzipped. When running the coolers, the shiftpod will expand like a balloon and you'll feel air pushing out of the unzipped hole. This part is key so the air continues to pass through the shiftpod, keeping everything cool inside. This took me a few years to understand because the guy who showed me this on playa just told me to "google it" 😔 I ended up remaking my set up with bigger shade over the shiftpod and increased the evap fan's cfm rating. I've been meaning to release a new video on last year's, but stay tuned. 👍👍👍

    I just found the shift pod a week ago because I was looking for the absolute BEST Four Season shelter because I want to combine it with my invention, a Rocket Stove (in the-ground) Earthen Thermal Mass Heating System! It will heat a 100 +/- shelter easily, AND It will help keep it cool in summer also because Earth temps are always lower than ambient temperature... Tested in multiple locations king of hammers burning Man a lot of emergency situations they've improving intestine that's what I want to work with. They used YKK zippers and carbon graphite hubs and struts I was so impressed with her system just blown away like I had envisioned, EXACTLY what I envisioned An Ice Fishing Shelter Hub on steroids, that will be good for all ALL seasons Cold and hot weather both and high winds which I think we're going to be having to deal with more and more they're like a perfect emergency shelter and that's what I've been looking for for 20 years actually since I had a picture burned into my mind about 40 years ago of a bunch of tents across a pasture and I KNEW that they were refugees and if I didn't do something to help them they would die and then in the year 2000, 20 years later I had a powerful, -like real-time real-life Technicolor -like-I-was-there, vision of an underground house and a homeless Family. That shook up my world, charged me up and set me on a course that's included a website, a book, and a TH-cam channel ALL with the same name; How To Get Out Of Babylon and ALL trying to figure out how to help homeless people in horrible and emergency situations. I think this is what I've come to other than building houses underground we need to have some shelter that will absolutely stand up to high winds and snow and ice and extreme temperatures; we will see heat and cold and this is like the most PERFECT thing I've ever found; "Space Age Tent for Space Age Conditions!!"

      Thank you for the love! :) With ur set up, I'm sure you'll be super comfortable - awesome that its powered by solar too! Here's the can fans I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072DSHKCH In 2019, when it got really hot, I plugged one of these into the side using a small power supply I had charged off a 100w solar panel: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OWRMZ6. It cleared out all hot air pretty quickly. I'm thinking of switching up the pool noodle idea to something a little different for the next burn. If it turns out well, I'll make a new video for this summer. Really cant wait to come back home!

    What are the pros and cons of the shift pod vs diy hexayurt? I heard a hexayurt can keep you very cool

    • @stationjeckmode9107
      @stationjeckmode9107 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shiftpod is convenient since it's a pop-up and doesn't take as much cargo space as a hexayurt. If a hexayurt is done right, its actually alot more comfortable to sleep in through the day. I've been in hexayurts that stay cool throughout the day under the sun with no cooling needed. The only issue with hexayurts is the set up on the playa and the cargo space it needed to be brought onto the playa. I've been using the shiftpod for the past couple years and I like it fine. I thought it was fun figuring out ways it keep it cool inside. Just know that a reinforced tent is still a tent. A hexayurt has at least 1" of sunblocking insulation, depending how you build it.

      Ooohhh siesta4 is really nice. It's just smaller. The big fans that attach to the walls make it really easy to cool down. That's a huge advantage over the shiftpod imo. There's a good amount of space in the siesta4, perfect for two people + gear. The space in the outer area won't be protected by dust, so keep that in mind. Fun fact - I was able to fit 17 people in a siesta 4!

    Problem with those fans at Black Rock City... ya also had a ShiftPod full of Playa dust. I will keep my AC cooled ShiftPod, almost dustless during my typical 10-14 day stay.

      Thank you, I’m trying to decide between using a portable ac system or just a swamp cooler. Have you tried both?

    Be careful not to pump playa dust in all over yourself! :) Aluminet is our go to out on the playa. It will help you keep any and everything cooler.
