Early Season Snowmobiling in Utah! Trouble in the back country🥶
มุมมอง 2.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Myself and a group of friends decide with the first snow in Utah it's time for a season opener snowmobile ride! Our trip turns south when early season conditions destroy my sled. With other sleds not starting we struggle to make it back.

The family heads out to the little Sahara sand dunes to test out the new power steering solution on our custom built sand rail, the trip goes south when our wheel decides to break off and leaves us broken down at the back of the dunes.
Easter at the Little Sahara Sand Dunes
มุมมอง 3432 ปีที่แล้ว
The family heads to the little Sahara Sand Dunes for an Easter Weekend in true 801 Fashion! After months of rebuilding our sand rail we hit the dunes to hear the flat 6 roar.
I can't believe you guys were sitting in the middle of a rush. Looked like no backstop, you should pick a better spot next time. Be courteous and safe!
*PromoSM*
Wow. You guys have no idea how a snowmobile works.
Oh shit can’t stop laughing! I probably tow 50 sleds and I never had this much problem with them all combined!
Towing a sled is no big deal! Kids!
Learn how to tow a sled! For one you don’t tow with somebody on it! You short tie one ski to the back of your sled! Makes it very easy.

cut the drama...
I do believe Frosty was flowing heavy! Definitely needs a maxi
Goodbye Frosty ☃️
Bro got blasted to Ohio 💀💀💀💀💀
You city boys ever think of hooking 2 pulling sleds side by side to pull the broken one
Haha half these boys come from the sticks😂 but we had lots of friends up there using our other sleds to have fun since it was a short trip up and we didn’t want to take them away from that!
A toboggan or even a large trash bag.And never hook up to the rear bumper. If you would have went through the ski loops then up through the bumper on the sled being towed. Great lmao.
😂 just need a snow mat under skid (or sleds like you figured out) or tow backwards with track in air supported on rear bumper with timbers. Shouldnt be anywhere near that hard to tow even with the drive belt on. It was obvious the drivers were locked up when you had it tipped on its side. You need to find a mechanically inclined friend or three. 🤪
fun video to watch
Next time you are in this situation, think like a train. If you had hooked two or three sleds together "like a train" you'd have had more success. I've used this method on more than one occasion to get out of back country when a sled goes down. Obviously the track was hung up which was causing all the frustration. It was pretty obvious something was broken when the drive clutch was just spinning. If that's spinning the track should be moving.
Yes, so a couple things. Gonna tow a sled, take off the drive belt. The track should move freely. If not, take off the chaincase cover. If something wrong there like broke chain or gears crunching, you gonna have to remove stuff so things can spin. In short, it should tow pretty easy if the track spins and if it don't, something is stopping it from spinning. Also you can do a reverse piggy back. Turn round broke sled. Put tracks on tunnel of tow sled so only skis on ground and go yo merry way. Sometimes things so jacked that's all you got.
Man you can’t just drive off full speed man 😂smh
I felt so bad for you guys while watching this video. All it would have taken is one mechanic to tell you about the broken chain and taking off the chain cover and removing the broken chain and you guys would have been pulled out and back out having fun an hour later. The chain bunching up in the bottom of the case then going free, then bunching is like having someone sitting on the snowmobile pumping the brake lever non-stop. Hopefully the chain case didn't crack at the bottom. Make sure you check for gear oil leak then you get it back together.
We’ll take a look, the chain was messed up for sure but we will check the rest, thanks for the heads up!
Always a good idea to have snowmobile mechanic whiz kid on the hills with you he would have saw that secondary spinning sled not moving and be like yup your chain broke. Most likely to much slack in the chain and the constant backshift and fast acceleration and the chain said nope I'm done lol
Seriously, this is a first for us. Definitely something we will check next time haha.
This Video pissed me off. Snowboard helmets and a toque is not a safe way to ride my uncle is dead because of no helmet smarten the heck up. No snowmobile helmet no ride stop showing people that it's ok because its not. I dont even test my sled in the yard no helmet I've been riding my whole life get it together.
You’re totally right! Helmets are a must! I normally have a full face helmet but my sled that has the heating cable for it was out for the weekend so the snowboard helmet was the best I had till my main sled was back up and running! Thanks for watching out for us!
You should stay in Utah where you belong.
Use 2 or more sleds to tow the broke sled.... And make sure the track is free on the broke sled.
Where do you normally connect the 2 sleds to the broken down one?
@@U_Xpeditions hook one to each ski hoop or spindle... And if need be, hook a third sled in front of the 2 others...
I was laughing the whole time everyone was trying to get that sled out. It isn't easy for sure, but having the right rope would have only made a small difference. I have the right rope, but sleds aren't built with as much steel as an four wheeler. I was getting entertained watching you make all the mistakes that I had did. I do wonder if pulling the sled out backwards would have been better.
Glad you liked it haha! We thought about trying to flip the sled around and load the track on the back of one of ours but the main issue was just the deep fresh snow made it way harder to get out. We have been brainstorming some ideas for next time a sled is down since this seems to be a couple times a year occurrence right now haha.
Yeah, usually a good option to lift skid onto back of the other sled but with that much POW the ski would probably have just dug down. But I'm only assuming
@@U_Xpeditions I have a sled that I can pull behind my snowmobile that can be used to recover snowmobiles. I also know how to fix snowmobiles. I was still very entertained though.
@@Tschida2004 You’d remove the skis and turn them around backwards…
When pulling snowmobiles out take the belt off before attempting to pull so the track will move freely.
On this one we took the belt off but it turned out the chain had broken!
@@U_Xpeditions next time you guys come through let’s go ! I’ve got a lot of good areas .
And have two guys on the pulling sled will help, hook to one ski and it should trail right behind without a rider...usually
Update: Still a newbie with mechanics so my original diagnosis wasn’t accurate. After pulling it out and opening it up at home we find that the chain broke, luckily sprockets intact (more than I can say for the skis and footplates we ripped through). Should be an easy fix we’ll be back out soon.
Did the chain bunch up on the bottom sprocket basically locking the drivers and the track like you had the brake lock on ? Or did the track still spin freely?
@@Tschida2004 chain bunched at the bottom but not spinning the track it was locked up.
Chain in you're chaincase let go!!!
Broken chain!!
I feel like you guys should start hosting meet up’s so you can ride with others/so I can join haha
That would be sweet!
You guys are crazy!
Man those avy courses can save a lot of lifes
Trees are for traction not spindles lol
Costs of sledding: 1. Break yourself - I've done this one. Distal radius fracture on the left arm. Costs more than any sled breakage 2. Break the sled - I've had to drag a sled back before and fix it 3. Getting stuck - Too many times. Got better at getting unstuck. Have fun!
That’s why our wives say we have an addiction haha.
Yeesh... at least you limped it off the mountain to the trailer. What a day !! New sub. :)
Thanks for the Sub Randy! Yeah this weekend we are heading up to Idaho down a sled till the shock gets back but hopefully we don’t have as many issues this weekend haha.
Did you blow up a ski rubber? Looks like it from how the right side kept diving.
I thought so too, but the lower A arm got bent so bad it bent the shock too and caused the right ski to be bent down and be back about a foot or so haha. So it did keep diving like an anchor basically. It took me like half the ride back to figure out that’s what was happening.
Nothing quite like being tired at the end of the day. Been there. Have to start early just in case it doesn't go as planned. Snow is falling this week. Going up this weekend. Mill Hollow or Soapstone.
That’s the truth! Have you ever had to sleep the night out in the snow? About half our avalanche class raised their hands saying they have had too because of bad weather! We are heading to Island Park, so I’ll be on my back up sled or rent a new sled till mine is back up and running. Should have some fun videos coming from that.
@801 Films I went to island park last year but it hadn't snowed in 2 weeks so the snow was horrible. I'll have to go back sometime!
drama drama drama
Hey do you have any video of the wrecker in the picture pulling it out? Kinda wanted to see how they got it out.
Yeah we do! We are posting that in a upcoming video hopefully later this week telling the story of the sandrail’s evolution from build to build.
If we could make it happen would you want to see a video on the build of the wrecker that pulled us out in that photo?
Yeah that would be awesome to see a videos of both builds
What a wild ride
Great!!!!!!!
I’ve had my snowmobile break before and it’s the worst thing ever! The description said some sleds wouldn’t start? What sled did that happen to?
Scotty’s Skidoo wouldn’t start after they got it stuck in the stream, so it probably added an hour to us getting out!
What engine and transmission are you using
We are using a Subaru EZ 3.0L and a VW bus type 2 with Weddle gears!
We Tighten those inner pivot bolts tight and then tack weld them in place so they don't come out. Just check the spot with grinder beforehand to make sure you can get to the weld, just in case you have to remove in the future.
We ended up welding on some tabs and inserting another bolt to hold it in but found we had some additional damage. If you watch part 2 it shows the recovery and we are posting a rebuild video soon!
Best to have spare 930s in the truck, and weld in that bolt. Glad you got it out and didn't have to call Matt's ORR
We used to carry spare 930s but we actually changed to 932s the entire hub assembly is actually custom built out of Australia now so we tossed the 930s. The bolt we came up with a solution for, we will post that video soon if you wanna take a look, along with more back story on the sand rail.
Pretty cool and capable. Dewalt drills make great hammers.
Yes they do!
It's very enjoyable to watch
Thanks for watching! Did you catch part 2?
The drone shots are epic
Thanks!
Pretty impressive they know how to fix that thing on the fly and get out of there.
The Greatest!
Makes me want a sand rail. Wish i had a friend that owned one!
