1950s Sears J. C. Higgins Stove and Lantern Restoration: Part One
In this video I introduce a match lantern and stove set sold by Sears in the 1950s. They're from Sears' J. C. Higgins in-house sporting goods brand. Both are in very rough condition. In this video I give some of the history behind these models and then work through a full restoration of the stove. The lantern will follow in Part Two. The stove is a Sears model 710.74030 and the lantern is model 388.74001.

    Do you know when the fonts are stamped on the bottom with the date and month manufactured? It appears that they are not manufactured every month of certain years. For example, I see a lot of 12/65s but not a lot of 2, 3, or 4/65 lanterns out there. Thanks.

      There are many months for which there are no known stamps. I'm not aware of a comprehensive list of dates that have been found. A few years ago I talked to a guy who worked in the Toronto factory in the late 60s and early 70s and he said that they would typically produce batches of founts large enough to keep the assembly line supplied for at least six to eight weeks.

    @king.coleman Did you ever reach out to Caswell and ask them why the recommendation was "drywall screws" as opposed to something else? I am not certain but it might have to do with the interaction between the Acetone & Black Phosphate. Many of your restoration procedures rely on chemistry that you don't acknowledge in your videos. Maybe you could start by getting that chemistry understanding and then sharing that knowledge. Luv the vids

This one had some fuel inside during storage and have not found good info as of yet on a "proper" way to clean the inside of the tank. I am going to rinse it with gas at the least until I decide if vinegar is a a bad idea. Has to be a very common issue and likely you may have covered it before. I usually fill the fount with a hot citric acid mixture and let it sit overnight. White vinegar would work just as well. When a fount is really bad, I've been known to empty a can of carb cleaner into and let it sit for a few days.

      If I recall correctly, the Duplicolor has a 48 hour drying time. The high heat primer and high heat gloss black require oven curing. The parts that got the high heat paint were baked in the oven. I ended up curing the final coat of green paint in the oven as well so that I could more quickly get on with sanding and the clear coat. Ordinary spraypaint can be quickly cured in the oven at about 200-250° for 30. Of course, it needs to be dry enough to handle before you do that.

      @@Dionisio181 It varies widely depending on how you use the stove. A tank of fuel will last a lot longer if you're using one burner running at low heat than if you've got both burners running on high.

      @@king.coleman Ok, i just want to know to calculate how much fuel i have to carry in an out door activity if i am running the stove with the 2 burners on in high.

      @@Dionisio181 There's no simple answer to your question. It all depends on the model, tank size, and how you use the stove. Unless all you intend to do is boil pots of water, I doubt that you'll have both burners running consistently at full blast as that will just burn your food.

    In the state of Victoria, Australia the residential building code used to mandate vents high up on the outside wall of each room. There were usually at least two depending on the room size. Apparently these were to allow for the use of kerosene appliances. After around the 1980s these vents were dropped from new buildings as being no longer necessary.

    Nice complete rebuild. Just picked up a U.S. L228 slant (with the big hat). Helpful runthrough from breakdown and cleaning to light. Thanks for posting. In Maryland USA

    Is carburator cleaner a no no with brass? Definitely a no no with asbestos, I would think. There is always vinegar and coke a cola with brass.

      @king.coleman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Carb cleaner is fine to use on brass. The active ingredient is methylene chloride, which won't harm brass. It's worth noting that a lot of carburetors include brass components. I usually use a citric acid solution (similar to white vinegar), but if the carbon is really tenacious and heating and quenching don't work, a soak in carb cleaner is a good option.

    What if I don’t have that patina I just want the scratches out ? I just got a new nickle plated 1911 and I want it to look like a mirror

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on how badly the plating is scratched. Coleman never made a Model 1911 so I don't know what model you're referring to. You might want to watch my full video on polishing a nickel lantern fount.

    Any idea where I can get my hands on a rebuild kit or something for the pump and check valve

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No one has sold parts for these in decades. If I recall correctly, the pump leather is the same size as those used by Coleman and if the rubber pip is bad a new one can be easily cut from a piece of viton rubber of cork.

      Yes. Everything came in the rebuild kit and was replaced.
