Hook on the Fly

Fly fishing hobbyist. Mostly trout. Come fish with me!
Tons of Trout in a Clear Creek (Bridgeport, California)
If you're a fan of fly fishing clear mountain streams for wild brown trout, brook trout and rainbow trout using mostly dry flies then you're gonna love this episode.
I love fishing high elevation freestone creeks and rivers, especially in the summer when it gets hot down in the valley. I checked out a new stream in the Eastern Sierra over the 4th of July with a couple friends and despite the worst mosquito conditions I've ever experienced fishing or camping, I had an amazing time. The fishing was off the charts, and although most of the fish were small (6-10 inches) there were a couple that I was surprised to find in such a small creek.
The big fish started coming out on the second day when there was a massive brown drake hatch (you can see it at 4:08). My wife caught an 18 inch brown out of one of the deeper pools on a dry fly with our baby on her back (you can find that video here th-cam.com/users/shortsJJe0lgpcanU) which was the highlight of the trip.

At the very least, these three tips will save you time setting up and breaking down your fly rod on your next fishing trip. They might even save you from breaking a rod or destroying a reel! Some of these might be basic beginner knowledge or common practice, but I've met people that have been fishing for years and have never heard these fly fishing hacks for setting up their rod. #flyfishing #t...

Getting Geared Up for Fly Fishing Part 3: Flies
Fish there 50 years ago..Last time I was there Caught a Beer Can and a Baby Diaper...😢
Great video! I do miss fishing that little creek, but it's been about 30-40 years since I've been up there, before they had the big flood that washed out parts of the road. I remember catching some good sized browns deep in the gorge back then. I am glad that the DFW has stepped up their patrols in that area, as it is remote and pretty much lawless, pretty far away from the main highway.
Is a good spot to fish during winter ?
yes, better in winter than in summer as long as its not snowing
Dude...i was born on the San Gabriel, east fork, 9 miles back. 😅
that's rad! like in a cabin, or...
Wow did you see the spots on your 2nd fish u caught that was definitely a wild trout and size was huge for the east fork nice catch buddy
Thank you , yes that fish was amazing!
@@HookontheFlynice to see that you are catch and release, that second trout looked delicious.
I'll take my tenkara in those tight spaces
It would play well here
Very nice video. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
do you need a license?
Yes, you need a California Fishing License to fish (game wardens will check) and you need an Adventure Pass to park most places in the San Gabriel Mts as it is National Forest. The adventure pass is only $15 or $20 and it will save you from getting an expensive ticket.
Great video mate!
thank you!!
The water sure was flowing nice in the spring time. Good times!
yup, hoping for another wet winter so we get flows and fish like this next spring as well
Great video! Is this Green Creek?
thanks! yes, it is
North fork of the San Gabriel River or big rock creek South Fork Campground Further up in the canyon, little rock Creek?
all good guesses, but not where this video was shot. truth be told I wouldn't tell you if you got it right anyway, I'd probably delete your comment so other folks don't find out...
@@HookontheFly the places, I mentioned north fork of the San Gabriel, and south fork campground of big rock Creek in the canyon Toward the Angeles crest may be worth trying? I did not expect you to tell me, but I gave it a shot.
@@keithpomella9953 right now isn't a great time to fish. the water is low and very warm and not oxygenated well. the fish are in survival mode , trying to make it through the heat of the summer so best to let them rest up. but if we get good winter rains again like we did last year, every fishable water in the san gabriels is gonna be full of fun and healthy trout by March! That's how it was this year, you could catch trout anywhere.
Great video man! Looks like lots of fun! I’m looking forward to my Mammoth lakes trip next week!
Thanks, have a great time! The high altitude streams and lakes are fishing great.
@@HookontheFly that’s great news, I’m looking forward to exploring these areas! Hoping to get my first brown and brook trout on this trip!
@@philr3510 theres tons of browns up there, i bet you'll do fine
I don't know when they started calling it the Blue McKenzie? I've only been fishing the river since 65.
I guess since 2022 when I fished it, that's what the info sign said
Not sure I’d be advertising those fish to the world. That area is getting WAY too much pressure these days and the fishery is showing signs of abuse.
99.5% of people who watch this video have no idea where I caught these fish, and those that do know to keep their mouths shut.
I agree, this river sees so much pressure already… respectfully I do not think it’s the best idea to blast it on TH-cam.
@@jordancollins1626 I'll bet a cold beer you have no idea where these fish were caught.
Cry me a river man these parts have been F-up for a while now and agreed people that do fish these parts know to keep quiet . Get off the dudes back . Sick video btw 🤙🏼
@@abehidalgo2788 exactly 💪thank you!🙌
I went to check out Piru Creek a few days ago and was able to catch and release a nice trout!
right on!
Awesome video bro, i love the creek. Back in May i had a crazy good day making it back to the final pool. Took all day but it was a perfect cloudy day, caught like 5 fish over 15 inches and a bunch of smaller bows. Tight lines brotha 🤟🏽✌🏽
Hell yeah dude! I'm hoping it's another wet winter so it will be good again next Spring too!
Great vid,and catch...I assuming you walk upstream from the BTN parking lot? My question is how mutch you walk upstream? I was fishing it downstream but the graffitis snd left over trash make me sad...anyways I catch a lots of bows. Regards from victorville.
the farther you get, the bigger the fish
Absolutely beautiful scenery and fish, where are you fishing looks like brown bear country😮😮
this is north-central california so luckily no brown bears just tons of black bears but they arent bad
Nice catch!
thanks!😀
That’s a brookie not a brown
Tell me your new to Fly Fishing without telling me you’re new to fly fishing
100% brown trout
@@LivingOutThere yessir!
Hey dude… this place is already getting destroyed by the Hispanics littering and trashing the place. Don’t put this place on blast. You want to make the video and post that’s fine but don’t put the name of the location like that. You gotta be stupid to not know this place is getting absolutely destroyed
How far is the hike to get back there?
@@genedavella9817 depends how fast you can hike but ballpark is 3-4 hours. I usually do all my hiking early, get in deep, then fish back as the morning warms up.
Go hit Tinnemaha, Goodale, and Taboose up 395. Ive pulled 2lb Browns out of there. Those are some beautiful LA county bows you got! I live in NM now. I do miss fly fishing the surf in Socal. I chase musky, walleye and rio grande browns to fill the void. Cheers!
Right on, I've fished Tinnemaha but never Goodale or Taboose, I'll have to check them out! I'm just glad to have wild trout so close to LA, even if they are on the smaller side. Never caught a musky before, it's on my bucket list!
Nice Video... Is it a long hike to access these waters?
yes, it's pretty far back up in there
Is this East fork?
sure
That’s the prize !
you know it!
Beautiful trout.
thank you!
I got into a fiberglass rabbit hole last week after your video and have a 4wt Superfine on order now. Looking forward to getting into some fish with it!
Amazing! curios to hear what you think about it, I love mine.
@@HookontheFlyUpdate: So the Superfine is awesome and casts like a dream. I also ordered 3 fiberglass blanks and am building the first of them now. I’m a fiberglass convert. RIP wallet
@@brettlinder7539 😂oh boy. well, there's a lot worse things you can spend your money on, that's for sure. I sure love my Superfine! Hope your build-outs go good🙌
I fished the North Fork yesterday, I caught seven and my wife caught eight. They were all less than 4” long. They were smacking our PMD dry flies all day long.
That's awesome, I love it when they're eating dry flies!
@@HookontheFly it’s really exciting! I had a few jump out of the water to bite them, lots of fun dispute the tiny fish! Hopefully they’ll survive long enough to grow into big trout!
@@philr3510 If we get a wet winter this year like we did last year then they are gonna grow grow grow!
Nice trout there .all the best from Scotland.
thanks! yes, we were surprised when we saw it, very nice fish
Fished up there 100s of times, your 2nd fish is about as good as it gets up there. Make a video on DEEP CREEK in the SB mountains, some good fish in those deep holes.
Deep Creek is on my list! I need to explore the SB mountains more, everyone keeps telling me there's a lot of great water there that I need to fish.
Absolutely epic. You are firing me up to hike in and fish local. Can't wait for fall/winter. We've had an early and hot summer this year so hoping for a cool September & October and w/some early precip (wishful thinking I'm sure). By the way are you also rocking the fiddle and mandolin in your music? Love the personal touch! (I'm taking a similar approach of recording my own music for my vids, awesome to see another angling musician).
A cool Fall would be great but I'm not holding my breath. That's not me on the fiddle, I play several instruments but fiddle ain't one. every once in awhile i get together with the guys and we just play a ton of stringband music and I record it all so i can use it on my episodes. Then other times I just record in my studio with what i have and what i can play, like banjo and guitar and bass, or piano and mandolin or something. I love combining the music and the fishing, stoked you do too!
Is this on the bridge to nowhere hike and past ? Amazing healthy fish unbelievable
Also any small tips on flys to use up there 😃
No, this is in a different part of the mountains
a pheasant tail and a parachute adams are all you need anywhere in the san gabriels
I’m 70 I used to fish the east and west fork when I was a kid used to go with my dad the fishing was almost always good great memories
It's a special place for sure

Keep up the videos! Love the content
Thanks for watching!!
Those mountains are dope man , the right spots hold them 🤙🏻 luckily lots of people still don’t know
yup, i think a lot of people don't like to h ike in there either, they stick to the roads so they miss out on a lot of the great spots deeper in
Nice release on the first one 😂🤙🏻 handless release
😁he let himself go!
Below the jam!
we be jammin' !!
WOW those are some amazingly chunky wild bows for our local waters.. Love the music too. Thanks for sharing and nice work! Looking forward to watching your other vids. Do you think the creek in this video will be fishable in the fall?
Howdy Mike, stoked you like the video and the music! There may be some fish in this stream in the Fall, but the water will be much lower and much warmer by then so there will be less oxygen for the fish and they have a higher chance of dying after being caught. I'm going to wait until temps start to consistently drop and the water levels rise again, which means when the weather is colder and we get more rain. So probably not until winter. I have another video from this stream coming out tomorrow that I shot back in early June, and that was the last time I've fished it because it was already starting to get too hot even then.
@@HookontheFly sweet, looking forward to the next one!
@@MO_Lives thanks dude!
I need to get up there. So close to home but haven't made the trip. I went a few months back somewhere up there but didn't catch anything. One guy down stream caught 1 but that was all the action we saw
It's been really hot and lots of people have been fishing the area this year. you have to get up super early before the water warms up and find someplace that is off the beaten path to catch any fish right now. I'm just waiting til Fall when the weather cools off, and the fishing pressure is a little less. til then it's kern and Owens for me.
Above
that's where the bigger fish were
I used to have the keys to the gates of the gorge. Was nice driving in. Havent been there in 15 years. Thanks for the video.
oh wow that must've been awesome. glad you liked it!
Great video!...All wild rainbows!...great looking trout.....love small stream fishing!! Great job!!
me too, small stream is the best!
Dump your graphite. In a few years of fishing you’ll thank me
I'm thinking about it. Just spent a whole weekend fishing the new glass and I'm now more in love with it than ever.
I have many glass Rods from 2 -8 weight The vintage Fenwick from the 70’s are probably the best. Fastest best balanced glass rods ever made
@@brianrobinson1975 you find them mostly on ebay?
Yes, the auction site has them but not as many as 5-8 years ago. Still worth looking for them. I like the first generation Fenwick Feralites the best (1962-1972), but second generation nice too, a little faster action. The handle grip on the first generation are my favorite cork grip of all time, nice big diameter and widest in the front half. Favorite models include FF70, FF75, FF79, FF80, and for second generation, FF705, FF755, FF756, FF805, FF806, FF807. The models over 8’ long get a little heavy and bulky, but FF84, FF85, and FF856 are great casters. All Fenwick fly rods of that era had solid stainless steel guides. There were some 4-piece models too, a little slower and full flex action.
@@barry4fish Excellent, thanks for the info! I'll keep an eye out
Glass will make you a more patient angler,,
totally agree🙌
i like your style, and i love a glass rod. check out cool casting for it, especially for switch and two handed rods slow is control my friend check out FlyQ series. the nature of vibration doesn t lie great stuff. love the bend
It sure was fun to use on that small creek!
they work great in that kind of water!
San Gabriel’s been doing good this year 🤙🏻
crazy how these big fish live in this small water!
