I think the mistake is using that really coarse grit over and over. 60/90 is fine.
Unfortunately, the diamond pacific vibratories are not as good as raytech and Lot-o vibes. Sorry there was so much work for so little pay off but lesson learned!
I just bought some. I'm new at this and have a 1 lb barrel starter kit. Was wondering if the borax made the rocks shinier in the end?
Couldn't hear half the time, music too loud. Overall good job🙂
I think thats a great idea! I've always ran borax in my vibratory tumbler. Mostly so the grit sticks better to the rocks for polishing. Never thought to use on a rotary tumbler. Has to be the same concept. Im gonna try it! Thanks for sharing! 😊
It actually works!
All you use for the finishing stage is a pre polish? No final polishing grit? Did I miss something? Wierd...
I typically use an A.O. polish, but this video was strictly for grit usage per barrel size. Polish is a different ball of wax so to speak. lol
I feel for you. I had the exact same thing happen. Mine were so beaten up. Could only see the flax when they were wet.
Where do you get your grit? (45/70)
THeRockShed.com
Split n retumble
Awesome work. Thanks for posting this
Wouldn’t the chips from the first week be useful to go back in as a helpful filler between all those bigger uneven rocks ? That rough was really jagged and I thought really fractured so it was interesting to see how it turned out. Nice!
I removed the chips for another project I was working on. Another reason for removing those chips is that they are super hard to clean out and may cause grit contamination when moving to another stage. Again, it depends on the condition/pitting of the chips.
Turn the music OFF
Thanks for uploading ❤
It's nice to see that I'm not the only one discouraged by some pits in my tumbled stones, I have just finished running some green tree agate, about half have some pits or fractures. I'm a retiree on a fixed budget, can't afford a vibratory at this time. I'm learning to live with what I get, they still look pretty. Still learning things after 3 years of tumbling.
The frustration is real!
Thank you! I love your videos.
Thanks!
Should I tumble Sodalite with moonstone? They are close to the same hardness
I wouldn't. Moonstone is so fracturable, that I belive baby-ing it by itself garners the best results.
I dont think that was pyrite. More like oxidized mica. It only flashes gold from certain angles
I'll have to check into that!
I would guess that the cabbing process is best, these look nothing like the ones i see for sale on instagram!
Since they are completely different processes and I'm not selling these, you are correct that they look different.
TY. I have found the exact same results. Borax plus ceramic pellets=thicker slurry to help grinding/polishing in every stage and barrel/rock cleanup is easier.
Reduce your video length. I would prefer not to see inspection of each stone when you so nicely outlined your criteria with a adjoining text slide. One or two samples thats it please.
Agreed they could be a lot shorter. However, these started out as a video journal for myself and I wanted an accurate representation of the time involved for this hobby.
Quartz is one of the easiest rocks to tumble
That will plug your pipes😮
My cleaning system is outdoors. I set up a utility tub over my outdoor rock garden and it drains directly into that. I do have a miner's screen set up underneath as well that catches any ceramic media that gets washed out. I would never dump slurry down an indoor drain. But thank you for your concern!
It's petrified asbestos
I thought you couldn’t put this down your drain?
I drain this outside into a rock garden.
Thank you the video. The tiger edges seem a tad more glassier then the flatter portion.
Purchased a miniSonic about 5 weeks ago. I'm still struggling with quartz getting that mirrored finish that i get using my tumbler. I'm wondering if anyone has written a detailed book about recipes for the sonic vib? Great video... thank you.
Not that I could find, but I have taken a year off from the hobby. I am in the process of organizing the next series, and should start seeing videos in the spring.
I don't think I have seen anyone using ceramic media during the first stage. I thought that was typically stage two or even three and on.
Depending upon what I'm tumbling, and how much space is in the barrel, I do use ceramics in stage one.
I'll actually use chunks of marble in my later tumbling stages. And...BS on the Grit not going down the drain due to it deciding to "linger"? Especially since you just washed it down the drain... Yeah, it's going to linger... and be a HUGE headache later 🤦♀️
Perhaps you should buy a smaller tumbler?
I have several sizes of tumblers. Thank you for your concern.
You would think that the more grit left over would be longer for the grit to work on the rocks. Is the point to expeditiously polish rocks or is it to save waste? I guess the question is if using more grit is faster or better.
Wasting grit is expensive when doing the amount of tumbling we do. Using more grit does not make the grind faster.
I am just now getting into crystals and agates I don't know whole lot about a lot of them I mainly got into them because they are so beautiful and if it was me I would take some of more of that host Rock off because I would want to make a beautiful piece of jewelry out of it that's something I do right now I make jewelry but those are very beautiful blue agate specimens I think they're one of my favorite next to the crazy lace agate
Crazy Lace Agate is hands down my current favorite. I can get lost in the patterns and how amazing nature really is.
Oh Sh!t down the drain?? You’re plumber will love you and your money😮
😉My setup is outside and drains into my rock garden.
Except for Lake Superior agates those are next! Beautiful 😊
Your plumber must love you!
I'm surprised so many people say this! The utility tub is outside and drains directly into the rock garden.
@@crystalwellnessstudio6171 I didn't know. Thank you for the clarification! You might consider giving a three-second explanation during the video. Doing a good tutorial video is difficult, but the better you make the video, the more subscribers you get. Good luck!
Hi! Ty for your video! Why baking soda?
Baking Soda causes a chemical reaction that reduces the gases built up with any organic materials and helps reduce the need to burb a barrel.
Ever have any drain problems from rinsing the grit and fine rocks and dirt into your utility sink?
Nope. Because this utility tub is outside and drains directly into a rock garden. I would never put it down the drain indoors.
Well, I was going to subscribe but looks like the channel is dead. Unfortunate, you have some great content!
Thank you for checking out my channel. I took a year off and will be continuing on with a new format soon. (Early Sping 2024). Hope you'll give me another try.
@@crystalwellnessstudio6171good to hear! Will do!
PM 2023
I use ivory bar soap (grated) I'm just not sure it is available there either
I LOVEEEE the imperfections because it still looks like wood. I have a batch of saddle mountain petrified wood going right now. I only did a week in each stage and am loving it soooo much. Im on the polish stage now. I have lits more pet wood to tumble 🫶
Where did you collect your unakite. UP?
I find a ton of unakite on the Lake Superior shoreline in Michigan. However, I will buy it from sites like The Rock Shed as well.
I miss your videos😢 Thank you so much for the great quality content and you Rock🎉
Ihave been watching all your videos. I learn a lot thanks to you and I love your videos, your explanations and your kindness. THANKS❤
Thank you so much for your kind comments. After taking a year off, I'll be doing more videos starting up in the spring 2024.
@@crystalwellnessstudio6171 sweet I am excited I stoped for 1 year too . I can't wait for your videos 🥰
You're very hard to hear and understand in this video because the music is too loud. Good information though.
Agreed. When I start producing new content again, I'll be sure to lower the volume of the music.
I've always wondered what a contaminated barrel looks like. My question can you mess up a batch of rocks on purpose? and show what needs to be done!! When i first started tumbling i had a grit contamination and I didn't know what to do, i end up throwing the rocks away thought they were no good. Thanks happy tumbling ^_^
Sorry for the delay in answering, I took a year off from the channel and new videos should start appearing soon-ish. While I understand your desire for this example, I just can't do it (on purpose, lol). To answer your question, when a barrel ends up contaminated, it's best to start from scratch. Clean everything separately, then start again in stage 1. Depending on where you are in the process and the condition of the stones, repeating these stages for a shorter duration is probably the best solution. It really has a ton of variables.
Just came across your channel, and subscribed, i mentioned this borax tip on my last video, i always have a hard time scrubbing the barrel clean after each wash out. Im excited for next weeks wash out. Thanks for trying a new experiment with your rock tumbler and sharing with the TH-cam community 😀
I just love your video :). I just managed to put my hands on Botswana agates' nodules (2 to 4 inches). It seems that you tumbled whole nodules. Did you keep them whole or did you cut them before tumbling them. I am scared to end up with shiny duds or minuscule beauties. Can you advise me on the best way for the best result ?
Have you tried any 30 grit to see if its faster than 60 or the other first stage grits? Your results here are pretty much what i see as well, cool video.
Every video I have watched they say not to dump grit down the drain. Why do you do that?
I NEVER dump grit down my indoor drains/plumbing. The setup I use is outdoors and drains into my rock garden.
@crystalwellnessstudio6171 best to explain this to your viewers at first to avoid many questions to answer. 😉
Too bad people have time to watch a vid but can't thumbs up...good vid, thanks
Just wondering, I see you change out your ceramic media to avoid cross contamination, I do this with plastic pellets; however, I’ve not notice the need to do it with ceramics. Did you find this helps, did you experience a contamination? Thanks. Love your videos!
Actually, it was trial and error. I found that for me personally, keeping the ceramics stage specific for the quantity that I do (12 barrels a week typically) it just helps reduce any potential issues. One less variable when trying to identify a problem with a batch. lol
How has it been working for you? I was thinking of getting this same unit, but with the MT-4 and a MT-10 hoppers. Do you use any kind of cushioning media with your polishing compound? I was thinking of using it to polish boulder opal and wondered if it was gentle enough for that?
To be honest, I didn't get far. I ended up taking a year off and the unit has just been sitting in the shop waiting for me to return. lol I'm starting back up and will have new videos coming in Spring 2024. I use ceramic media with my polishing compound, which is normally Aluminum Oxide at 2 Microns.
