  • Many #rocktumbling enthusiasts have asked if using Borax actually does anything when used during a tumbling run. So we did an experiment.
    Short answer: YES.
Experiment: We ran a 7-day cycle without Borax, then another one with adding 1 Tablespoon of Borax per barrel capacity. Example, a 3 pound barrel would get 3 Tablespoons.
Outcome: The weekly barrel clean up was a breeze when using the Borax. It also helped to break the water tension (we have hard water) creating a thicker slurry giving us a better grind during the cycle.
Recommendation: Going forward, I'll add Borax to each barrel, no matter the stage.

Couldn't hear half the time, music too loud. Overall good job🙂

Hard to hear what you're saying with the background music.

PSA- NEVER rinse any of your tumbling slurry down your drain. It will sit in your pipes and harden like concrete.

I don't think it's a real sink. Just an old one sitting outside without pipes.

Exactly. That's why I have an old laundry tub set up outside near a hose and it drains into an unused rock garden.

      I thought the same.

Nice idea of having a tub outside for rinsing, I have an old metal trash can upended next to an exterior faucet. I like your idea better

The old laundry tub drains directly into an unused rock garden near an exterior faucet. It has saved my back!

I think thats a great idea! I've always ran borax in my vibratory tumbler. Mostly so the grit sticks better to the rocks for polishing. Never thought to use on a rotary tumbler. Has to be the same concept. Im gonna try it! Thanks for sharing! 😊

Just came across your channel, and subscribed, i mentioned this borax tip on my last video, i always have a hard time scrubbing the barrel clean after each wash out. Im excited for next weeks wash out.
Thanks for trying a new experiment with your rock tumbler and sharing with the TH-cam community 😀

You're very hard to hear and understand in this video because the music is too loud. Good information though.

Agreed. When I start producing new content again, I'll be sure to lower the volume of the music.

TY. I have found the exact same results. Borax plus ceramic pellets=thicker slurry to help grinding/polishing in every stage and barrel/rock cleanup is easier.

I have been adding borax for the last 30 minutes of the run using vibrating tumbler. Had not thought to add it to the rotating tumblers from the get go

It has been a clean up game changer as well as much more consistent thicker slurries.

I always add borax to every stage of my tumbling. I wonder if this is more important to do if you have hard water.

Good question. Since I also have hard water, I have no way of testing this.

My cleaning system is outdoors. I set up a utility tub over my outdoor rock garden and it drains directly into that. I do have a miner's screen set up underneath as well that catches any ceramic media that gets washed out. I would never dump slurry down an indoor drain. But thank you for your concern!

PM 2023
