As I understand it, Seiko was the first watch company to mass produce the automatic movement. They also invented the quartz movement.
Thank you for covering this, I always told people that the term "overwound" is another word for "This watch doesn't work"..
When buying used watches..
Everyday is a school day, awesome but of history, thanks.
Great to see you again. I was waiting for new content. I hope you had great holidays.
Nice timepiece
good info
Thanks for that really super cool watch for one, and I'm also really happy that someone lambasted rolex😂😂😂😂❤🎉
Glad you liked it! No way Rolex can recover from that!
What a fascinating watch-and, delightfully, a video short enough to leave one wanting more, rather than droning on unnecessarily to of things out. One thing that leaves one wanting more, however, is the audio editing: it seems that every utterance is cut short, as if the audio recorder was bored and in a hurry to get to lunch.
Thanks for the nice words and feedback
Much appreciated, brilliant movement.
Happy to see you back at it. Loved the video. I have some stuff coming shortly. Been absent… got engaged and well…..
Thanks mate, congratulations!
That is seriously cool!
Rolex has a remarkable track of failed or dubious firsts that were buried later by marketing. The double failure of the Submariner is quite amusing.
Excellent video Sir!👍👍👍
Thank you! 👍
This could explain the loose wrist action of some men that continues on to this day!
@@MACEWINDULastJedi Harwood has a lot to answer for.
Love the knowledge. Always a treat to watch the productions of the Gentlemen.
Hey Ross! Cheers mate!
It's a cool piece of tech. How well does it work in a real world application? Does it wind enough to make it through the night on your nightstand?
Hi Dave, I suspect there's a reason this was the one off watch design, the strap has to be worn tight and it's a struggle to keep it wound.
It depends on how active your wrist is at night!
Brilliant video and interesting horological history! Thank you Sir!
Cheers mate

What is an overwound watch? After 40 turns of the crown on a manual watch, you probably break the stem... Just wind the watch and if the turning of the crown is blocked, just stop. The watch is fully wound.... An automatic watch will run after a few spins. Then wear it and ik will wind itself to full power in the mainspring....
I love the commentary, especially how you cut each phrase off abruptly, pressed for time!👍👍👍👍👍
Delightful! I came for the MuDu history, stayed for the watch repair and shall certainly remember you for future work. All my local watch repair shops have gone and my experience of postal outfits is vast sums spent on inferior work - so I taught myself! In the process I learned much respect for those who look after watches for a living. Opening a watch for me is to step in to a hell of frustration and shouting, I am certain I would become a mass-murderer if I did more than one in a blue moon! Sadly my favorite pocket watch lost it's balance impulse jewel and I'm still girding my loins for that task! Microscope, balance wheel, tweezers, heat for the shellac and wheel, tiny ruby... did I pick the right size and shape? Try not to loose it or splurge hot shellac everywhere! ...burr...
Excellent, the microscope is definitely the way forward for fine work. For replacing impulse jewels I’ve found making a shellac ‘glue’ with methylated spirits more controllable than using heat and it can all be done under the scope. Having said that Alex has a great video on the subject and he’s brilliant th-cam.com/video/geSvSBkyVsM/w-d-xo.html
I loved this video. Thank you so much. I just bought a seagull high copy 1963 19 jewels. And I was afraid to wind it because of the internet. I have one question though: do you think same rule applies to a chinese watch? Could there be an issue due to low quality? Or should I just wind it freely? Still, I fear wayyy less now.❤
@@emreylmaz4533 Great watch with an interesting history, it’ll be fine to wind until you feel that first bit of resistance.
I have the beatles wacth 1963 Sweden. I want sell only $6666 USD
Best narration in the watch restoration/repair genre!
Thank you!
Glued on dial? Oh good god that should be a capital crime - I have a lovely little Fremont triple date where some wanker put great big gobs of super glue on the dial feet as they stuck through the main plate holes; said gobs then running down the holes and securely holding the dial in place by it's feet. Forever. No problem I think - acetone dissolves superglue. Well it had dissolved the super-glue after I got tired of trying and left it for 3 months. Then I could carefully pry the dial off. Capital punishment for these wankers. And oh, great narration by the way!
Very interesting, thank you. Sadly it it possible to destroy the entire watch if you wind it too much (mainspring unleashes all of it's power at once), but it happened to me with a vostok watch, and the crowns are voluntarily loose because of the way they make them...
True, that can happen when the mainspring breaks which is quite common in older watches...and if a spring is going to break it's likely to happen when the watch is being wound....but is that over winding or just an spring breaking? Who knows?
@@GentlemensWatchServices I have a couple of over wound watches that still run fine, the keyless work is intact and both wind with no problem .
Great videos, your English humor is the best Please keep them coming Thank you
Thanks, will do!

Wonderful tip for ones screwdrivers, I've been sharpening with a stone like a Neanderthal! Rolly world records... Highest AD markup, largest hidden profit, worn by highest amount of morons! 😅
Hello my Brother and welcome back! Been missing your entertaining videos. I noticed a few things while viewing the video. There was way too much play in the barrel bridge. That is probably a lot of the cause of the low amplititude. I also noticed that the lower 3rd wheel pivot was badly scoured. Again, hurts amplititude. The balance wheel was either poorly re-staffed at some point or has bent pivots as seen by the "wobble". Also noticed more play in the main plate on the center wheel than I like to see. I know each has their own level of acceptance for tolorances though. I would expect to see at least 270 degrees of amplititude with the installation of a new, white, mainspring even with a 100 yr old watch. I've see as high as 305 degrees after replacing an old, blue steel, one with a new white alloy one. Looking forward to your next vid! Cheers!
You were close with the expected amplitude, at full wind it's getting 304.
For a second there I thought it was the great philosopher Alan Watts who was making this video!
The thing is with a lady's watch is that its is small. So I would presume a lady's Rolex would be twice the price of a gentleman's Rolex!
Certainly had to grab the small screwdrivers.
My wife has a favourite engine turned Rollie of this vintage, perhaps a close sibling off the rose machine. Thank you for your videos. I greatly appreciate your oiler game!
Many thanks!
Why do you think the plating under the crown wheel hub was so scratched up? The hub doesn't move.
I ask myself the same thing, don't know. See it quite often.
My my, what an entertaining delight was this? Half an hour flew right away without one realizing it. Please accept my gift of a click on the famous like button.

Wow, did not expect Aliexpress. Happy about the quality (good fit for replacing both 4039 and 4040)? I can't be the only one always on the hunt for new type of movement holders. My Bergeon 4040 isn't my cup of tea. And movement specific ones are difficult because I only do vintage. Really enjoy your video's. Your oiling is magnificent!
Another great video. What grit sandpaper was your first?
Thank you, 600.
The commentary was astute, the watch tending skills proved average, video editing lacked outrightly. Details better left unseen, seeped indiscreetly, into the published version. Can anything allay watchmaker’s wounded reputation? Alas, only Time, healer of broken hearts will do it, Exacting for His grim labor’s toll, the passing of many generations!
At long last, a gentleman emerges who possesses the singular finesse to wield the English language with grandeur and precision. A pleasure almost indecent in its rarity
I thought you might of forgotten us. Glad you're back.
