Wingfoil Waterstart Technique
Here I show the technique for the Wing waterstart.
This is a great skill to have when it windy if you drop in the water or catch weed.
Gear used in video -
@duotone.wingfoiling Skybrid 5’4 55L, Glide dlab 620 foil, dlab slim 84 mast, Unit 3m.
I am 85kg, you need plenty of wind but I’m finding with the 55L Skybrid I don’t need to be overpowered I can waterstart with the right power for wave riding on 4.5,3.5 & 3m wings

My review of the 2025 Duotone Unit after using the 4.5 & 5.5 Dlab & 3m standard numerous times in both handle & boom configuration. Weighing the boom & handles on scales the boom is 50 grams lighter. For my style & conditions I prefer the handles & have fitted them to my 4 2025 Units. I suggest you try for yourself to see what best suits your style of riding. Duotone Whizz SLS 850 review I was lucky enough to get hold of a Whizz 850 for a week to test it out winging in some great conditions a few weeks back. Designed primarily as a prone foil the Whizz also works great on the wing especially the 850. Its not a fast wing but has loads of lift and turns amazing with no problem at all if the tips come out, you actually don't even notice. It needs to go...

North Ace vs Chrono 2 & Diablo - Part 1 The Launch
What length of mast are you using with the whizz Pasty
previously the 90 dlab now the new 84
Hi Pasty i ride the 1450 whizz in 10-15 knots and bought the 900 G2 for 20 -25 knots however the shop sent me the 165S instead of the 185H tail will this still work on my skybride 5'10" I am 99KG 2:30
@@Youngfoiler1977 hi I’ve not got 900 but use the s165 on the 750 & 620 with +0.3 shim. Turns better just lose a bit of pump if you are downwind paddling.
@@Youngfoiler1977 I’ll swap the s165 for a h165 if you want 🤙
I love the S series as well. I just used the s210 on the 900G2 in 18 knots Glides and turns amazing. Will try the S165 and see what I gain and losse
Awsome conditions and great surfing ! What size of fins did you use for your k4 incinerators ? Thanks for your inside
Great review, thanks! Would you say this shape is in principle a pure lightwind-oriented board or would the smaller sizes are also be suitable for stronger winds? At 80 kg i am not sure if the 5‘6 70 liter Skybrid or the 75 liter Sky Style would be the better choice… any thoughts on this…?
@@M78-y7r no I use the Skybrid for all winds. 5’8 for light & 5’4 for windy at 87kg. if you mainly do freestyle jump tricks then the Sky Style for everything else the Skybrid is better
Hi, can you confirm the windrange of the 5.5 from 9-22 knots. I weigh about 68kg and wing often in very gusty inland wind conditions. So I’m doubting between a 5.5 and 6m. I very often wing in light wind. Does the 5.5 really works in 9 knots?
@@ferdinandvaneeckhout8544 no problem for you to go on 5.5 dlab in 9 knots. I can go on it with glide2 dlab 750 on skybrid 5’8 & I’m 87kg. You prob won’t want to be on it in 22knots though but if the odd strong gust it can handle it 🤙
@@pastyadventuresthanks for your feedback 👍🏻
What would be Yours current favorite setup for these conditions? Glide 2.0 or Whizzz? THX!
Hi, have used the Glide 2 dlab 750 once in similar conditions and it went pretty good. amazing low end & speed but doesn't turn as well as the Whizz 850. Need to ride it a bit more in those conditions to be sure, defo prefer the whizz 850 in small waves and onshore, and the Glide slab 620 is epic in big & windy
Did you feel the extra weight of this board a bit of a concern compared to other midlength?
@@lewiss66 compared to which? Most production 85L boards are around 6kg with straps
@@pastyadventures the skybrid 85L real weight is 6.9kg
@@lewiss66 mine is 6.2kg with straps on scales
Impressive carving! I believe the mid length boards do well a front foot strap. Thanks to mid length boards, improved foils and wings > Light wind and big waves now are open for the taking.
Thanks, Lee. Great video--information and production quality...and skills. Please do more. I've been a Slick guy but may have to try this out. BTW, what helmet are you using?
What harness line are you using?
Yes, I’m interested in those harness lines as well. Seems a nice compromise between the stiff windsurf ones that get in the way and the soft ones made from line that just blow flat against the boom so you can’t hook in. Thanks.
I,am interested too ..what Brand and size are the Harness line ..
The white ones look to be Dakine.
Thanks for this, clearly the boom is taking on... all brands are coming out now with a boom version which coming from windsurfing it is awesome... well at least for me :-)
Yep boom is good but might not be best for you? If you are freestyling then prob yes. I suggest testing for yourself 😊
@@pastyadventures Handle or boom is a personal thing. I always like boom better. In a recent Duotone Wing & Foiling Tech Talk video, Ken Winner said most of the top guys prefer boom and therefore the trend of the industry is going toward boom.
@@robtangent4664 as I say for freestyle the boom is needed but not for pure wave or cruising. Wesley Brito is using handles in waves and he’s current World Champ. For bigger guys with longer arms the handles are more comfortable
Great video, thanks! 🤙
Thanks for another informative and enjoyable vid - the wing looks great and the two handle system seems best. Trouble is their so expensive.
@@PhilWard-v7o thanks I do have a 3.5 & 4.5 2024 going cheap 😉
Hey Lee, thanks for another great review. Really informative and great footage. I weigh 99kg and I use the 5'1 Sky Style 85l in wind from 15-30 knots (with different wings and aero free foils). I really like the board and the volume, because it sinks a bit under my weight which adds stability to me getting up in heavy chop, but I could do with slightly earlier take-off for both lighter winds and also for using smaller foils. I'm also after a narrower board that won't catch the rails as much (I have the '23 version Style) on turns on waves and in chop. I'm on the UK South Coast with a lot of chop and small mushy waves. Would the 5'8 (85l) Skybrid be what I am looking for and a good replacement for the 5'1 Sky Style? I want to use it with the Whizz 1000 and 850 for riding swell and waves.
Excellent review - fantastic vid! I have the 1250 free with the P200 stab as my main winging foil on the UK south coast and I really enjoy using it. I weigh 100kg and want something that is better in the small mushy waves. Would the Whizz 1000 wing set be a good replacement?
Yes whizz 1000 is epic foil turns super good and has better low end than free 1250 😊
Great video !!! Does skybrid 5.8 supports your weight (90kg) in light winds or "no wind at all" (meaning a suddent stop of wind for some minutes) ?
I can but depends if you are good at wobbling. Ankles are wet and it’s not easy if choppy and zero wind in wing. If wing can fly it’s no problem, Unit dlab makes it easier 😊
Similar feeling for me, I got the 100L version of this board and at 105kg found it amazing! It makes getting on foil so easy and turns like a dream! Nice video and thanks for it!
Do you think the 85L will be good now since you rode the 100L ? Thank you
@@ericwoof5124 only if you are planning on 15 knots and above ay my weight
Got the sky free 95L. Two years riding 58 years old. I'm 70kg just passing the jibes. Should I keep the sky free one more year and get a 5'6 skybrid later on or directly switch to a 5'8 skybrid? Thanks for your video!
@@lewiss66 depends how light wind you want to go in? 95-70 is big drop in size if you go in light winds. The 5’8 is amazing much better than sky free
Nice vid as usual Lee - Do you prefer wing foiling to the other sports ?
looked a blast ... bet it must be epic up at Hayle river mouth on high tide n a big swell..
Fantastic Lee. I’m still learning so am very much inspired by these videos showing your wave riding skills. Thanks
Awesome Lee 😊
Nice! Thinking about a used skybrid next year/used sometime probably. What's a good kg/l for an intermediate? Currently on sky style te 85l with 85kg weight. Part of me says 80 to allow for low winds like the last few weeks, but another part says go lower...
I'm 82kg and I went for SkyBrid 5'8 85L to have a neutral buoyancy and I'm really glad I didn't go lower but the wind is mostly light and inconsistent where I sail on the lake so sometimes it dies off completely without a warning
@@danielpugh2752 skybrid is 85 or 70L so depends how light you want to ride in. The 85 is great 👍

Hi there. Would you sell your SkyStyle now because wanna use SkyBird? I have 75L first one and thinking if I should replace it with a 70L Skybird. Jumping is not an object. Do u think u will use your SkyStyle now?
Yes already sold it. The 70L skybrid will be perfect for you
Which stab/fuse setup are you using with the whizz 850? Im at 62 kg, had a session with it had to move the mast almost all the way forward, had just enough front foot pressure. It was on a powered in day with a 4.0 UNIT and style sls 4.5 (45L) What’s your take on that? One of the guys who has the whizz 1200 uses it with the 180P and he likes it better, for winging. Thanks for the review 🙏🏻
@@emanuelslonim9600 yes whizz will be all way forward on the style. Skybrid has longer tracks. I use 60 fuse winging all foils. The 850 is best with the s165 stab but I prefer the 1000 with the p165 stab on flatter water and bump riding as it makes it go faster. I small weak waves and light wind the 1000 is better with the s165 as it gives more pump and lower stall speed. I’m 90 kg and mostly ride waves. The 850 works really well with the s145 as well really loose but I can push turns harder in bigger waves with the s165 and the 850 is fast enough on flat water didn’t find it any better with the p165 it just has higher stall speed
Hi pasty Do you think you could paddle up on this board? Or need longer 🥂
@@wingfoilcoach in waves yes in flat water prob not unless you are a lightweight pro
Lee great review I started out on a Duotone Sky Free 5’9” 125 but it’s got a warranty issue so looking for a new board. Is the Skybrid really a lighter wind take off board (like the AK Nomad or AFS Whitebird) or is it sort of a half way house between the Sky Free and those longer boards. I’m 75 kg foiling well but not foil jibing yet and was thinking of the 6’ for mostly gusty inland lakes 0 to 25 mph and perhaps a few trips to Lake Michigan on friendlier days of lake swell!
@@johnnoble1967 yes it’s halfway. Won’t get going quite as early as a longer narrower board but will get going way earlier than the Sky free. And when flying it feels like a short board not like the downwind boards which feel like a long board
Interesting I’m a bit wary of Duotone right now given my Sky free has given way under the deck pad where my knees go but the SLS construction might fix that. Am I also right in thinking you see this as a one board does it all if you stay in that 0 to 25 mph in relatively flat water? Thanks again
Thanks for sharing looks an awesome board love to try one if I get the chance. I'm sick of catching a rail turning on a wave and clipping it. Good winds bro😊
Nice one… coming off a takoon comet sw 5”4’ 120ltr…. At 91kg, will I miss the buoyancy if I go 5,8 ? Or better to go 5’10.. would be my every day board… can’t demo here in guernsey…👍
I’d say if you can gybe and want it for over 10mph go the 5’8. Either board is going to blow you mind compared to that Takoon 😊
Cheers pal 👌
Good review. I'm 85 kg naked, what size would you go as one board quiver, but also to work in light winds? Light wind I mean 11knots and up.
Depends on foil, water state, wing size & your level. the 70L might be too small for light wind unless bigger foil and wing. the 5'8 85L works great but I won't be using it in big waves and 30 knots ill be on my 50L.
Thinking to wait on a review of the 100ltr. For lighter winds I’m 88kg. This looks an incredible board already though
@@wingfoilcoach if you want to go under 10mph then yes otherwise the 5’8 is good 👍
Hi Lee Nice vid What kind of harness lines are you using ?
mono line
Nice one Lee, great review, really useful
@@jadearama cheers Jade. Hard to make it short but still get over what I want to say. I think there’s a good balance of stability from the width and feel from the foil as not too thick. Some of the really narrow mid lengths are really thick which I find feels bit weird
Awesome 👏 i also own a Fish but in the SLS version and absolutely love the board, so much fun 🤩 keep up the stoke 👍
Great video! I love my Aero Free 1000 and it is my daily driver in all conditions. My riding level and conditions seem similar to yours. How do the two compare? Any reason to switch?
Hi The Whizz is a lot looser and way more pump. Also can get the tips out and hit white water no problem. If your main thing is waves for sure swap the Free 1000 for the Whizz 850, actually the Whiz 850 is better in every way than the Free 1000, not as fast as Free 800 but as fast as the 1000. Do it and you will be loving it like me even flat water see how far you can get the foil out on a turn 🥳
G8 review, thanks...!
good review, thanks, much appreciated - no foil can be best in every aspect and I guess you allocated it just right within the DT foil family
Thanks Yes it’s an amazing foil in the right conditions but it’s not the right foil for some conditions 🤙
Hi, spending a week at Newquay. Do you have Some tips where I could give it a try? I’m not used to wing in big waves, used to wing on lakes. Thanks for the info!
Yeah Stithians lake is about 40 mins away or if wind direction right Daymar bay 30 mins or Mylor 40 mins
And if I would like to go to the coast, where would you advise to go? Where is there a chance to find other wingers?

Awesome riding 😎 fab conditions thanks for sharing 👍
Have you checked the top speed? And if so, what did it clock out at?
You mean the foil? I’ve not ridden it in flat water but have clocked 27mph flagged out on a wave. I know people who have done 30knts on it
Hi Lee, another great review. Would you say the Carve is easier to handle in typical UK chop and 2-5ft waves than the Aeroglide? And what would be a good size Carve as a one foil quiver for 65kg intermediate? Thanks,
Yeah the carve dlab comes into its own once you have good wave power or lots of power in wing for doing tricks. The 850 is great as one foil. If you want to glide and cruise chop or unbroken swell then the Glide is better, 725 if you only go when windy or 905 for lightwind is great 🤙
Thanks Lee much appreciated!
