Honda CB450 Ep 18 - Fork Rebuild

Hi, and welcome back to the channel! Here we are putting the forks back together following the rechroming of the stanchions. Info is a little sparse in the manual apart from the parts diagram. I’ve tried to repeat the dismantling but found I made a major error! Fork oil everywhere! Please note, I explain the error…basically, the canister, retainer and spring should be installed as a unit BEFORE...
Honda CB450 Ep 17 - Fork disassembly
มุมมอง 392ปีที่แล้ว
Hi, welcome back to the channel! In this episode I'm dismantling the forks to send the stanchions away for re-chroming. Previous rebuild of the forks had shown the chrome to be pitted and scored at the section where they travel through the seal. I'd hoped this wouldn't be a problem but they've been leaking fork oil into the gaiters fairly freely. Hence the rebuild and re-chrome. After the video...

Hi, welcome back to the channel. In this episode, I've logged my rebuild of the wiring loom. The whole process, snatching a few hours on a weekend, has taken around 3 months to complete. I'm not entirely sure how useful the video is for anyone but me! I've made a log of the things I did so I can go back and troubleshoot as I find problems later on! Thank you for these great videos. I am not sure if you are monitoring the comments, but I do have a question that I was hoping you could provide some guidance on.. I am stuck trying to install the cam on the exhaust side as I can not get the timing line to line up; I also lack clearance from the follower/rockers to rotate it any meaningful amount. Could this be a problem with how I installed the valve?

    • @ratmotors903

      Hi! Thanks for watching! No, you’re not doing anything wrong. When you move the cam into timing mark you’ll be pushing against the tension of the valve. It’s really tight. You need about 12 hands to hold the cam in place, and thread the chain!

Triple tree at the top the fasteners are at the sides of the forks gaps pointing outwards. The bottom yoke will be pointing the same way to hold the forks. Fasteners will be on the inside of the forks.

    i sorn'ed my xj900f 7 mths ago, it was running fine before and had a carb service not that long ago at great expense. now i've started it up again, it isn't happy, running lumpy, choke mech is fine and the bike will both do 70 mph and tick over but it isn't right, it doesn't pick up well and i find myself reving to keep it running, slipping the clutch to pull away and generally it doesn't feel too good to ride. i'm not a mechanic but i think i could clean the jets using your video as a guide, i'd use spray carb cleaner as i haven't got that cleaning box. incidentally i changed the petrol and put fuel additive in but no difference to speak of.

    Hello - if you have a source for the rubber bushing at the top of the headlight brackets that slip over the fork tubes, I would be delighted indeed to find a pair for my 1969 CB450 K2. The same inquiry applies to any other hard-to-come-by rubber bushings on the 450's. Common Motors stocks a wide variety of replacement parts for Honda twins, but alas does not list these.... Too bad you had to bin the roller bearings and races in the headtube, since these had already replaced the original loose-bearing set. At least Common Motors does stock a full kit of roller bearings, races, spacers and seals for the 450 head tube.

Can certainly sympathise with the fight! I had a lot of use out of my manual impact driver as it came apart the first time.

    • @ratmotors903
      @ratmotors903 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, without seeing it it's difficult to say. You do however hit the compression stroke 360 degrees (full engine turn) again on LT? I'm assuming you think that install needs to be on the compression stroke i.e all three marks line up on compression stroke? They should line up on the 'off' stroke. The cam lobes determine which 'stroke' occurs when and don't change relative to the index marks so as long as all three marks were aligned when you put it on you should be fine.

    you stated that your 450 is or is going to run pod air filters , and you have pattern exhausts ? also the stock main jets are 125's ? . Think you will find stock for your late model 450 (disc brake ) stock jets are 130's , also the stock air filter/airbox set up does flow a good amount of air , the exhausts tend to be the restriction , especially if carboned up , with less restrictive air filters and exhaust you would normally need to go 20% larger in jet size , not smaller . I suspect you will run weak above 3-4k rpm with 120's .

    • @ratmotors903
      @ratmotors903 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for your feedback. Honestly, I ended up in a total confusion of settings, jet sizes, filter densities, exhausts, manuals and ended up resting on this combination. The exhausts are brand new so no carbon deposits as yet. I had stutters at 3-4 on tachometer so upped the jet sizes slowly. Ended up with 145 and found it impossible to idle. Wet plugs too. Dropped it back down. Had big issues with feeling which I then thought could explain the stuttering at higher rpms. There’s a lot of conflicting info. Clymer, Haynes and Honda service manual all state different jet sizes. 125 or 130. For mums again are a little conflicting. I’ve gone with the 125s for now and will assess the situation as I get going. I dare say I’ll end up somewhere around 130/135. I’d really love to source some original air boxes! Thanks for your input.

      @@ratmotors903 Yes, that's what I've been reading...the pods cause all kinds of idle and stuttering problems at mid rpms. I plan to keep the airbox.

      Definitely keep the airbox if you can. Pods were so difficult to get right.

    Any chance you have a step by step wiring video for the CB 450? I can only get so far with the diagram.

      Hi, I’m working on it right now. Not sure how useful it’ll be but I’m doing a complete re-wire using the factory diagram.

      @@ratmotors903 Can’t wait to see it! I’ve just discovered I’ve been working with the wrong harness so it’s back to square one. This is my first rebuild so I’ve had a lot of screwups but your bids are super helpful!

      No problem, you’re welcome! This is the second loom I’ve built. Did my xs1100 loom which was very complex. The 450 I’m finding is not too bad from the diagram. I’m treating it as lighting circuit and then charging/ignition circuit.

    Hey Rich here's a link th-cam.com/video/R2XXAQ02OWg/w-d-xo.html to my restoration that may be interesting or useful to any CB450 K owners out there?

    Thank you so much for the great series. I bought a new 1972 CB450-K when I got out of the Marines Corps that year. It was a great bike.

    Very good video. The rubber hoses you removed. Can you educate me as to where these are located when attached to the bike? I'm currently rebuilding. Cheers.

      Hi. There’s a few different hoses. There’s the larger hose from the T piece which is fuel, from the fuel tap there’s a vacuum hose as well. The cluster of hoses underneath the carbs are overflow from the float bowls. You’ll want these routed so of there’s overflow of fuel it exits under the bike. I think they tuck behind the crankcase pointing down. The other two fuel and vacuum head up to the fuel tap.

    Thanks! This video was very helpful. The bike shop wanted $1400 just to look at my Suzuki and I am certain it's just a float that's bad.
