Webster: The Word Game IBM PCjr. Demonstration
Webster: The Word Game was released by CBS Software for several home computer platforms but for the IBM PC compatibles it was only released for the IBM PCjr. CBS Software released other games exclusively for the PCjr., including Timebound and the original versions of Ernie's Magic Shapes. Big Bird's Special Delivery.
This game is interested due to the animated "raster bars" style effect shown on the borders on the title screen. This sort of feature tends to get lost (DOSBox) or not shown correctly (86Box) by emulators. The PCjr.'s graphics controller can set the background and border colors independently in graphics modes, CGA can only do that in text modes. Otherwise there is nothing of consequence which this game does graphically that CGA cannot do. The game also supports the PCjr. 4-voice sound chip as well as the PC speaker, alternating sound effects from each source. The envelopes on some of the square wave notes heard here cannot be reproduced on chips that clone the TI SN76496 PSG without altering the sound data.
You may note in the beginning that I run the game off a floppy disk. The game is a single-file executable, unfortunately no original disk image is available. I booted a stock IBM PC-DOS v2.1 disk. This does not load a memory manager driver which would improve the PCjr. speed to PC levels. The raster bar effect is limited to only the top quarter of the screen when the game is run at PC speeds. The sound effects are also significantly faster as well. So for this game PCjr.- speed is essential for correct operation, something emulators still struggle with.

    It would be interesting to do this with some games that use artifacts to create additional colours and strange effects. For example the leaves in woodman's stage on rockman 2, the water in zelda, the lava in metroid etc Or even just games that use a lot of blending like へべれけ . At least comparing composite to RF :)

    The flickering isn't too bad on a real game boy colour but what hurts the presentation of this game more on such hardware is the interlacing of the screen, so it ends up where every other line of the 2 parallax layers is missing, losing a lot of detail as it scrolls. Strangely, when you pause it, the lines stay missing. I am guessing this means the GBC (and GBA seems to work the same) updates the display in a weird way, in that it only updates half the display every frame but for example if you pause it, it stops updating the display completely and the alternate lines never get filled in? Strange. How do the original DMG and game boy pocket / light handle things? Are they all interlaced too? I have only found a video of this game playing on a DMG but that screen is very blurry so it is not possible to tell as all scrolling detail is lost anyway. Would be interesting to see on a pocket or light. But yes, what you show here looks far better than on a real game boy as you don't have the ghosting and are only blending 2 frames instead of probably quite a few on original hardware. BTW, even some gba games use this effect to some extent, for example with the map display on f-zero.

    How is the frame blending compared to the Analogue Pocket on the Chromatic's own screen? If I turn it on on my Pocket, it eliminates flicker but motion is more blurry compared to my original GBC. Was wondering if Modretro's method works better.

      Frame Blending on adds latency because you have to capture a frame or two frames to blend it with the following frame.

    Can you show Desk Mate, BASIC and maybe, Windows(if there, which version?) Please, thanks. I would get it for Desk Mate and Home Organizer apps.I had a 1000 RLX, Desk Mate, in full color, was my fave app. I also liked Windows 3.11, Windows 95(if it ran on that machine, I'm not certain. According to long-time Ultima lore, the Apple ii version of the 1986 re-release of the first game has a little knight come out of the castle on every fourth loop of the intro (and supposedly a race car comes out every 16th). I can not find the disk images anywhere, and this is one of the very few places online I can find any reference to that version specifically. Do you know where I could get my hands on the disk images you have, or somewhere where I could see this knight/race car visual effect?

      Some 1987 releases of Wizardry support Hercules Graphics, something I did not realize. The 1984 release is very different and only supports Monochrome Text. You need a different version of the game to see the text-only display and a late version to see graphics.

      @@NerdlyPleasures Well, the thing is that I have the 1987 re-release and it only supports CGA (apart from having graphical improvements) and Hercules. On the other hand, I also have the original PC release from 1984 and it loads the old graphics in CGA only. However, I have not been able to activate the MGA [Hercules] "text only" mode. And all this in emulation from my current PC.

      @@sebascor What is the date of your version? I know the version of February 27, 1984 and that is it for the old release. For the new releases I have dates of March 14, 1987 (5.25" CGA only) and September 10, 1987 (3.5", Hercules graphics)

    Update: I was mistaken about this game's lack of Tandy graphics support. Just run SKYFOX16.EXE (CRC32 0E1B5A78) with the "t" command line argument, as in SKYFOX16.EXE t and you will see Tandy Graphics and hear Tandy Sound. Thanks to Cloudschatze for pointing this out to me. He also pointed out that "m" gives you mouse support if you have a mouse driver installed.

    It's not unused though. Throw a "t" parameter at SKYFOX16.EXE, and you'll get both Tandy sound and graphics. The game even has mouse support with inclusion of the "m" parameter. (e.g., "skyfox16.exe t m")
