I understand your opinion that you simply like Rolfe better, but I seriously disagree with some of your personal reasons why Rolfe is a better fit than Smith: 1 they really did not know each other that well. I majorly disagree. You wanna complain about couples that hardly knew each other: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel (yes, she fell for Eric because he was a human, sorry) if anything the first thing they said to each other was their names, NOT a love song or dancing about how they’re each other’s true love. Heck, their first date is all about they simply getting to know each other and having a bit of a cultural exchange. Rolfe doesn’t even try to learn about her culture, heck the last thing Smith does in the movie is say goodbye in her language as his final act of love! He never wanted to say goodbye, but he did because he loved her so much! All Rolfe basically knew about her was how devoted she was to her people, willing to die just to stand up to the king. John Smith immediately respected and understood how impressive her people were to her, as shown when he wanted to stay with her in the end after she declined his offer, because he knew how much she loved her people! 2 “They weren’t suited to each other” THEY WERE BOTH FREE SPIRITS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Pocahontas felt almost no one in her tribe understood her because she liked spending time outside the village but also couldn’t be happy with the man she was expected to marry. John Smith NEVER tried changing her like Rolfe did and took her lessons to heart, specifically arguing with Ratcliffe about the war and trying to convince his comrades war was wrong and completely unnecessary. You mentioned about how Pocahontas didn’t need Rolfe, but found him anyway? Pocahontas was betrothed to another man when she met Smith, she wasn’t even looking for love. Disney could’ve easily made where they just became good friends and had some feelings for each other, but in the end understood they had stronger desires for their own dreams, and unfortunately that wasn’t each other. If Disney wanted to show Smith wanted to keep exploring instead, his wounds would’ve been able to heal in Jamestown, but he chooses to go back to London and invites Poca to join him. She tearfully says she’s already where she belongs, and he accepts her decision saying he’ll never forget her and everything she taught him and wishes her all the happiness. BUT in the end when she says she can’t go with him, he immediately respected how important her people were to her, simply saying he wasn’t leaving her. *I don’t get why EVERYONE’S ears were apparently glued shut when he said this, indicating he didn’t want to leave her, knowing that his wound would eventually kill him. He ONLY returned because Pocahontas insisted he go back for his own good. He did it for HER, not because he wanted to keep exploring or being a captain more. If anything, I feel Rolfe’s choice to leave his job and aristocratic lifestyle was rather rash and felt it kinda came out of nowhere just because he understood her duties to her tribe, that she’s ready to die protecting her people in front of an angry king. *Please note I do NOT count John Smith’s sequel personality as canon, given the entire point was in a desperate attempt to make him look like an selfish immature jealous ex to make Rolfe look like the better choice who actually cared about Pocahontas’s feelings and understood how important her people were to her. *Back to “Smith and Pocahontas really didn’t know each other that much” that’s being kinda unfair given they couldn’t even hang out whenever they wanted, but also I feel couples like Ariel and Eric or Aladdin and Jasmine hardly knew each other that well, and yet both are waay more popular than Pocahontas and John Smith. If anything Aladdin kinda forced Jasmine into falling in love with a mask of himself in an attempt for her to love him so much that if the truth ever came out, she’d love him too much to let a lie get in the way. Heck, John Smith literally says “I’d rather die tomorrow, than live a hundred years without knowing you” like Pocahontas meant a LOT to him. He was the one to cheer her up when she’s overcome with grief and guilt, even snapping out of sadness they shouldn’t have met. He was reassuring her he doesn’t blame her for anything, giving me that “Don’t worry about me. I’ll think of something, I hope.” vibe 😆 Like even just watching Pocahontas as a movie, in comparison to most Disney couples, they looked genuinely in love with each other. For me, Rolfe only liked Pocahontas when she fit his standards of beauty. Like he only liked her as a friend even when they arrived in London. He doesn’t even get why she’s running all over the place, not getting she’s a bit of a wild child, and insisting she act more like a lady. I’m not changing my mind that he fell for her as a civilized lady instead of a Native American. He didn’t even have any plans of moving to Jamestown/ New World. Yes, he wanted to establish peace too, but I still feel his love kinda came out of nowhere. *I even tried watching Pocahontas 2 without being biased that Pocahontas and John Smith have been my favorite couple ever since I was a kid (I didn’t watch the sequel until I was like 20) and even then, I still would’ve preferred Pocahontas and Rolfe just remain friends in the end. I just feel they’re too different in personality and what they want in life to be compatible. If anything, I really can’t see Rolfe being able to adjust going from an aristocratic lifestyle to living a much more simple lifestyle amongst her people. Like John Smith was already used to roughing it and would have little trouble of learning to live with her people, given they respect him. Rolfe for me is literally used to going to extravagant parties and balls amongst handling politics. He would miss that too much. *I understand and respect if you like Rolfe more, but like I mentioned, even if John Smith just didn’t exist in her life, I still wouldn’t ship Pocahontas and John Rolfe. If anything it could’ve been a great example of a platonic relationship, given friends get friendzoned all the time. I don’t get why Pocahontas “has to fall in love again” like for me it’s either she married John Smith or just never married and became a single chief of her people. Like for those who like Rolfe more because “he isn’t her first love” that’s being unfair given literally NO OTHER Disney couple has this problem, not even Phoebus and Esmerelda. Can you even imagine how furious fans would’ve been if they tried this on Ariel, Belle or Jasmine? Like if Jasmine fell in love with an actual prince and was seriously thinking about ending things with Aladdin because the prince never lies to her? I do appreciate the idea of having a Disney princess of having a second love, given its a bit of a more realistic approach and most people don’t marry their first love. But as I already explained, Pocahontas and John Rolfe fell in love because “the script said so” in my eyes. Like I can’t even describe Rolfe’s personality outside of being a gentleman, that’s how boring he is. In my rewrite, I even make it abundantly clear that Pocahontas does NOT like Rolfe that way at all, that her heart will always belong to the only person its ever belonged to: John Smith Also I seriously disagree with your take about their love: you’re trying to make it sound like it was a summer love or they didn’t truly know what they wanted in life. That’s flat out not true as John Smith’s love literally came from how wise she is and she helped him understand how wrong he was about her people and he took her lessons to heart, trying to get his comrades to not fight with the natives, but later on helps her reach the same peace and serenity he has achieved in accepting his death, that he would truly rather die than not know, let alone love, her. Rolfe doesn’t even do anything romantic or chivalrous aside standing up for Pocahontas’s choice to reapproach the king, understanding her loyalty to her people. The REAL John Smith would’ve already had her back, agreeing she’s nuts, but he likes nuts, given he’s seen her stop a war by herself Also, another reason I wouldn’t ship Pocahontas and Rolfe is because I really feel his “love” was infatuation or puppy love. He was willing to dump his entire life in London just so he could be with Pocahontas. It NEVER implied in the movie he was unhappy with his fancy life or job. He had friends and family there, and seemed pretty happy. While Smith literally doesn’t say goodbye to anyone and even admitted he feels London isn’t his home, simply his birthplace. But he was becoming enamored with her world and was eager to learn more about her culture’s way of life. Rolfe doesn’t even have any interest in the New World aside going to get the chief to come back with him to negotiate a peace treaty. I really feel once it struck Rolfe on how much he was going to have to change and learn to live like her people, he would’ve seriously struggled and eventually would’ve missed thing he couldn’t do in Jamestown. While Smith is so used to fending for himself and roughing it, making him a waay better match for Pocahontas. Plus it never shows Rolfe trying to learn about her culture or even acceptance of the spiritual magic. He literally is more logical and political. And Pocahontas doesn’t do ANYTHING in the movie to change Rolfe’s mind about how he views his “friends” and how they behave with mocking a trapped bear. All it is was him randomly saying “F*ck mannerisms and etiquette, I’m following Pocahontas to my death if that’s what happens”

In most ways it’s not really fair to blame Spock for his more infuriating moments, he’s just so *confused* (cough-NyotaIsABeard-cough) but I realised the other day that though they are different, I could see Pine’s Kirk making the same choices & behaving in much the same way as Kirk-Prime. I don’t really see that connection in the Spocks because Quinto’s Spock can & has hurt Kirk whereas Spock-Prime would carve pieces off himself before he’d hurt Jim (when he’s in his right mind. Pon Farr & pollen psychosis don’t count).
