when i was younger | kirk + spock

WARNING: this video is pretty chronological and thus deceptive; it does contain footage from STID in the latter half. So this is a warning of both spoilers and quality (you know it's bad when I give in to cam), and omg the flickers, I could not for the life of me get rid of them so please just ignore them/pretend they're intentional/don't let them bother you as much as they bother me.
Anyway, hello, I'm still alive! I have had a toxic combination of business and lack of really being into anything I was watching enough to make anything, and then, well, Star Trek happened. When I saw the first film in 2009, I was completely drawn into the mood of the series and the characters, this relationship in particular, but then of course 4 years passed and I moved on but with this new film... yeah sufficed to say I'm not doing so well with the whole moving past it thing, and I now find myself watching the original series and films on top of the reboot, so fair warning there's a pretty decent chance I might end up making something for TOS too.
But yeah, the song choice for this video just came out of nowhere, it wasn't the first thing that came to mind but idk the whole idea of living up to the expectations set upon you, particularly in respect to specific aspects of heritage, is such a prevalent theme in the reboot in particular, and I think it's such a defining feature of both characters and how they respond to people and each other that it felt right. So I made it. Because the theme is so specific there's loads of angles I didn't get to approach this relationship from, so I'm hoping I'll get around to making more before my interest wanes. But I hope you enjoy this ;)

In most ways it’s not really fair to blame Spock for his more infuriating moments, he’s just so *confused* (cough-NyotaIsABeard-cough) but I realised the other day that though they are different, I could see Pine’s Kirk making the same choices & behaving in much the same way as Kirk-Prime. I don’t really see that connection in the Spocks because Quinto’s Spock can & has hurt Kirk whereas Spock-Prime would carve pieces off himself before he’d hurt Jim (when he’s in his right mind. Pon Farr & pollen psychosis don’t count).

then again though, these versions of them are much younger and have been through somewhat different experiences than their older counterparts. they met under such completely different circumstances. in the original series, spock has grown to understand and appreciate) kirk and his way of seeing the world/experiencing life. he's grown to understand both parts of himself.
in the reboot, we see spock still navigating life (isn't he pretty much still a teenager by vulcan stardards??). torn between two worlds. throw that in with losing his whole planet, his mom & he becomes even more torn.
