Converting an uninterruptible power supply to LiFePo4: what do you need to know?
มุมมอง 8073 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, I will show in detail the process of replacing failed lead-acid UPS batteries with new lithium iron phosphate batteries. For example, I will use the UPS APC 1500 PRO with a power of 865 watts. It was equipped with two batteries of 12 Volt 7 Ampere hours (in total 24V 7A/h). We decided to replace them with liFePo4 with a total capacity of 24 V 15 A/h. Thus, the capacity of the bat...

      I've done the "lazy method" with 100Ah cells, but as a middle step. First, I discharged the cells to 2.5v each using a regulated load. Then I connected the cells in parallel and let them sit overnight. The next day, while still connected in parallel, I charged them up to 3.2v. I then disconnected the cells and let them sit overnight. The following day I tested voltages and all cells except one had identical voltages. I built my battery with 4 of the identical cells. 12 or so years later, I'm still using that battery.

    • @james_mckey
      @james_mckey 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Chronix-SE I am, but not a traditional UPS. I replaced the power supply of my computer to run off 12v. Then I hooked up a charge controller/power bypass designed for 12v SLA batteries that could handle 50A out. My intent was to run my system off solar power, but I do not get consistent enough sunlight, so I purchased a radio power supply that I set to 15v, 30a. The power supply charges the batteries through the charge controller and also runs my system. If the power fails, then the battery takes over. For a good year I simulated sunlight using a timer switch, just to see how well it performed. Now I periodically shut the power supply off and see how long the system runs on the battery. Unless I'm gaming, it'll run my system for around a day. Some details abut the battery: It is a 4s LiFePO4 where each of the 4 cells are 100Ah "prismatic" modules. The nominal voltage is 12.8v, and charge voltage is 14.6v, putting it right in the same ballpark as a SLA. The "float voltage" on the controller is 14.2v, which LiFePO4 are perfectly fine with. The battery has a maximum discharge rate of 200A, a maximum charging current of 100A, and a recommended charge current of 20A. The charge controller charges at 20A. My computer draws a peak of 250 watts, which at 12v is about 20A. Its an older system and not that efficient. I set it up around 2014 with batteries I picked up used from an old school lab project. The system when I set it up had about 94% of the rated capacity and is currently running around 88%. I haven't been able to do a full test recently because my load that can handle a constant 30A is temporarily out of comission. EDIT: I should also note that I do have a battery protection board that prevents over charging, over discharge, and short-circuit conditions. It also monitors individual cells for the over charge/over discharge conditions, but doesn't do any cell balancing as far as I can tell.
