    Hello sir I'm hoping you can help me. Recently due to health issues I can no longer drink caffeine but I absolutely love coffee. I did my research and bought some of the best decaf I could find from Washington, Oregon, Missouri all shipped to me. I have never grinded and brewed my own coffee, just used a Nespresso or Keurig and bought regular Folgers Colombian. But I want the taste to resemble as close as possible to regular coffee so I invested in this special decaf. The problem I'm having is everytime I try, the coffee comes out very light in color and taste very watered down. I've tried putting it in a Keurig and Nespresso using reusable cups but it fails every time. I don't want to keep wasting precious decaf coffee I bought. Looking at your video I will invest in what you use but my biggest question is what type of grinder do you use? I bought a basic one on Amazon and am unsure if this is the reason why it keeps falling. Perhaps I need a better grinder? Thank you for the video and for your time.

      @@booksunwalker5051 Thanks for your message and unfortunate you're stuck drinking decaf, but great to hear that it made you explore coffee further. Did the coffee you bought have a roast date? Coffee is best when fresh and decaf tends to stale quicker than regular coffee which will make it taste dull. Additionally if you bought from a local roaster the probability is that they roast lighter than you're used to and you'll get a lighter/less bitter cup than you're used to. I'd say if your coffee comes out too light though try to grind finer, a better grinder will definitely help with this since it will also be more consistent. I'd personally recommend looking into the Kingrinder K6 which is an excellent grinder for the price and should be a big improvement(it's one of several grinders I own personally and by far my favorite grinder below €100). Alternatively if this is outside of your budget look at the Kingrinder p0/p1, it's a cheaper plastic construction but still should be a big improvement over all other grinders in that price range. Hope that helps let me know if you have any other questions.

    Did you ever measure the temperature accuracy with external thermometer? Is it the actual display reading? Does it overshoots? Does it hold the temp in hold mode without big fluctuations?

    • @BrewtifulBeanJuice

      @@nikdeb4481 I measured it but used a cheap AliExpress thermometer so it was hard to attribute differences in measurement to the kettle as the thermometer had a +-1.5°C error margin and the deviations between the thermometer and the kettle display always fell within this range. It doesn't seem to overshoot much because it slows heating when it's almost at target. In hold mode it will cool down a bit and turn back on but with a variation of only about 1°C (based on display not separate measurement)

    Great tips! Very similar to my experience! Abaca filters, reducing agitation, and grinding coarser have made a big difference and my brews are much more consistent. Variations of Lance Hedrick's simple pourover recipe seem to work really well. Temperature is a weird one though. Lower works well for average decafs but if it's a high quality decaf (there aren't that many), I find that brewing at temperatures similar to caffeinated coffees of similar roast levels works well. I've been experimenting with using different temperatures for the bloom vs the rest of the pour and has some good results (Samo bloom or the high temp bloom, lower temp pour). Thanks for haring this, by the way! We need more decaf videos

    If you want better control over pouring, it may be good to get a small pouring kettle, but still get your hot water from your office source

    • @BrewtifulBeanJuice

      Definitely, something like a Hario air could be an option for that, but it's also an additional thing to bring which is a trade-off. For the experiment I wanted to test if I could get good coffee with minimal equipment and I was surprised how good the v60/drip bag poured with the cup actually tasted.

    Nice video, I like how you shed light on a practical problem probably anyone somewhat into coffee and working in a flexible office has encountered. I measured the hot water in my office as well, which gave me even weirder looks than brewing coffee. I think the grind at home and brew at work option should have included the Aeropress. Or maybe even drip bags without coffee, and grinding the coffee at home. The Aeropress has the advantage of markings, making it possible to eyeball your water, especially when you use something like the prismo or flow control (the setup Im using) Also, I think your video (or another video) could add to the available knowledge by diving into the question: "can I brew good coffee at 85 celcius". Because that question could rule out the use of drip bags/Aeropress all together. This answer is very much implied, and I've tried to answer the question myself, but I've seen hardly any content related to brew temp in a practical sense.

    • @BrewtifulBeanJuice

      Glad you liked the video and thanks for all the suggestions. In terms of the drip bag without coffee, I only realized this existed after I filmed the video and have recently bought some to try out. In terms of the aeropress, I agree it could've been an interesting option to look at, but I chose the plastic v60 as I already owned one, and I tend to prefer percolation over immersion brews and I didn't want to make the video about that. I do see your point about the markings making it easier as you don't need to bring a scale, never thought about that. In terms of temperature, I think the video definitely proves that even with lighter roasted coffees you can have a tasty cup with 85 degrees, but it could indeed be cool to do a video about that in the future though. What's interesting is that James Hoffman did a video a few years ago arguing for boiling brew temp always being better, while my personal experience has been very different.

    I usually just brew straight into a travel mug and take it with me or I drink it before work. Interesting to see the results of all these method though. Also I would imagine the Hario air kettle would be useful for office brewing. fun video!

    Update: One of my main complaints was simply user error, so my bad, I apologize for not checking this more thoroughly. After posting the review a friend of mine pointed out that in the online manual of the kettle there is an instruction on how to turn off the beeping sound by pressing the hold button for 2 seconds. I just tested this and can confirm that this indeed works.

      Really glad to hear you like my videos, that's exactly why I make these! In terms of availability they're a small company that hand makes everything so your best bet is to sign up for their email updates. Every month or so they update the webshop with new items and these tend to sell out quickly but if you know when the update happens it's easy to get some nice items.

    Thanks for making a video about this dripper, I might pick one up. Interesting recipe too, very similar to Sang Ho Park v60 recipe minus the bloom. Have you tried a multiple pour recipe with this brewer?do multiple pours clog it? also curious to know what V60 recipe you use.

    • @BrewtifulBeanJuice

      Thanks for watching! I'm not familiar with Sang Ho Parks recipe but I believe you, there are so many recipes out there it's hard to keep track. I've tried many different recipes with this brewer and multiple pours definitely don't clog it, of all the brewers I've tried this one is by far the least likely to clog in general. It is super versatile and also makes a great cup with a more classic bloom + 2 pours or something more like the James Hoffman 1-cup V60 with 5 equal pours recipes. I tend to switch recipes a lot on the V60, I really like the Tales Coffee single pour for some beans which is very similar to what I did here but with more agitation (it reaches very high extractions and this isn't always equally pleasant with different beans), I used to do the 5 pour JH recipe a lot, I like the osmotic flow recipe (coffee chronicler has a good video on this in case you're interested), and have recently started experimenting with a 2 pour where the first pour is 100g and is kind of a 1st pour/bloom hybrid and the second pour is 150g. I need to test this on more beans and work out if I want to add more agitation but I might make a video about it if it holds up across different beans (although I personally don't believe in a single recipe that suits all beans since different beans will benefit from different extractions and different recipes can bring out different sides of the same bean)

    • @Java_CM

      @@BrewtifulBeanJuice I can't fully stick to one recipe either haha but your right it depends on the beans. I like the Tales recipe and osmotic flow but can get varying results, same with a 5 pour method. Lately the Sang Ho Park recipe has been pretty consistent for me, little to no bitterness and well extracted no clogs but ill try grinding finer and test your version out tomorrow. Ill probably pick up this dripper pretty soon. Thanks for your response! looking forward to your future videos!
