Analog Melodic House - Moog Minitaur / Volca Bass/ Volca Keys / Behringer Crave / Volca Sample 2
This is a melodic house style track performed on four analog synths. The midi data is sequenced in my DAW and the audio is recorded as individual tracks with my Focusrite 18i8 for mixing. I want to give a big shout out and thanks to @Starfarer for telling me about Single Channel MIDI mode on the Korg Volca Sample 2, which lets you sequence all 10 parts on a single midi channel. I was so close to buying a drum machine when what I really wanted was to sequence the Volca Sample like a drum machine. I love the slightly crunchy sound of the Volca Sample and I'm really happy to be able to sequence it alongside my synths.
The star of the show here is the Korg Volca Bass, which handles the main pluck. That was my first synth and I still love it. It's surprisingly versatile.
The Moog Minitaur handles bass and aside from a little EQ it's going without effects.
The Volca Keys handles pad duty on this one and I think it sounds just awesome with a little bit of detune in unison mode. Here I'm using it for an analog string synth sound that sounds so much better than its budget synth status would suggest.
The Behringer Crave rounds things out with a sharp pluck sound that has some noise layered in. It serves as a sort of counterpoint to the Volca Bass pluck that runs throughout the track.
Aside from the bass and drums, everything has a mix of delay from Soundtoys Echoboy and reverb from Native Instrumunts Raum, plus a little chorus from Baby Audio Magic Switch.
If you've made it this far, drop a like and subscribe if you'd like to see more synth demos. I try to show off all of my compact synths in a musical context.
I'm really happy with how this came out and how quickly it came together! I think I spent as much time setting up and finding sounds as I did sequencing and arranging. Every time I do a video I set the whole thing up from scratch. Even the table is temporary, I usually keep it in my closet. It encourages me to do a unique setup every time, but it means the process of filming a video is kind of chaotic. I'm proud of how clean the cables are in this video, since I had three per device for a total of 15 ! I remembered this week that my interface (a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 2nd gen) has four line inputs on the back that I haven't been using. So that's going to let me explore bigger setups from time to time. It's a really cool interface, though there's a fair amount of audible cross-talk between input channels.

This is a synthpop jam featuring a trio of analog synths and the digital JX-08. It's short and simple and, I hope, fun. The Behringer Cat is in the bass role this time, alternating between a sustained bass and a punchy bassline. Almost all of the the waveforms are up in this patch, with a little extra emphasis on the sub generators. The Behringer Crave plays a plucky sound here, outlining the m...

I saw the band Priest at Dark Force Fest last month and they put on an awesome show! This Industrial Cybersynth jam was sort of inspired by them. This track has a big fat bassline from the Moog Minitaur, which is still my favorite bassline synth out of the gear that I have. The pluck/chime is from the Behringer Pro VS Mini. This is a condensed Melodic Techno track featuring the Behringer Crave on bass. TH-cam tells me that people frequently search for Behringer Crave Bass, so I figured I'd give the people what they want! It's a pretty simple patch. The sawtooth oscillator is patched to external audio so I can blend both waveforms. Keyboard CV is patched to VCF cutoff so the filter opens up with higher notes. The B...

    Sounds really, really nice! : ) I just got the Volca Drum and I'm wondering if I should get the Volca nuBass or Behringer TD-3-MO ... Which one would you recommend ?

    • @scottnelle
      @scottnelle 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I only have the NuBass so I can't make a totally fair recommendation, but I'll tell you why I made the choice that I did. I really like the Volca sequencer functionality. I have three other Volcas (Bass, Keys, and Sample 2) and while they have slight differences the sequencer is largely the same on all of them. I *think* the TD-3 (and TD-3-MO) use a sequencer that's more like the Roland TB-303, which I've heard is very frustrating to use. I usually sequence in my DAW, but for an Acid synth I felt like it was best to sequence onboard. So I went with the one that I was familiar with, and for me that was the Volca. Having said all that, I think the overdrive on the TD-3-MO sounds really great, whereas the drive on the NuBass needs a little help in my opinion. For this track I used a free saturation plugin. If I were going to be using it live, I'd probably get a Pro Co Rat V2 pedal (or an even cheaper copy), which was one of the most popular pedals for acid distortion back in the day.

    • @BPEMETO
      @BPEMETO 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@scottnelle Thank you for the detailed answer! I plan to use my setup mainly for live home jams. : ) From what I've seen, may be the nuBass is the better choice. The thing is that I plan to get Behringer Proton and the TD-3-MO I can use as a sequencer and patch it with the Proton ... But I can get both the nuBass and the Behringers later on. : ) I'm new to this analog dawless stuff and it's really addictive. :)

    • @scottnelle
      @scottnelle 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BPEMETO That sounds like a fun setup! The volcas were my gateway into hardware and they're really cool. I've expanded my collection to include a lot of stuff since then, including several Behringer synths. They're a great value!

      @@scottnelle I got the NuBass. It's so cool. : ) Can you share the Blade pattern for this video?

    • @scottnelle
      @scottnelle 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @BPEMETO That's awesome! Here's a video where the pattern is up on screen in a software 303. That's probably the easiest way to recreate it. th-cam.com/video/BRZTkTWFgfo/w-d-xo.html Essentially it's G# for the first half, B for the second half. All the magic of it is in the slides, and octave jumps. I think when I programmed it on the Volca I sequenced in the second octave and jumped up an octave when I needed to, but this video sequences in the third octave and jumps down. Either way should work. Toward the end of the video they slow the sequence down, which might be helpful to nail it. Let me know how you make out with it!

    are you adding a lot of processing to the Bass ?.. or this is how the patch sounds

      I've added a little compression with CLA-76, a little saturation with Decapitator, and a little stereo chorus with Baby Audio Magic switch. But it's all in tiny degrees. When I bypass everything it sounds basically the same, just mono and a little less consistent in volume. The depth and buzz are already present straight out of the Minitaur.

    Great music, some really great sounds you've programmed. People are so critical of Behringer synths, but they can sound fantastic in the right hands. I've got the Behringer Pro VS Mini too, it's an amazing little synth for the money!

      I get why people gripe about the Behringer clones, but I don't feel bad about buying the ones that clone gear that's no longer produced (like the Prophet VS and the Octave Cat). Cloning the Mother 32 is a little questionable, but Moog fans will tell you that the Crave is nothing like the Mother 32, so I'll give that a pass, too. :-)

    Excellent work again! So pure and clear sounds and catchy groove. 🎶😎✨ Nice to hear about your workflow. I've done something similar (write stuff in daw and play those with hardware) in couple of jams, and this is the way I'm sure I'd do it with complete songs. Would be great to have all of the instruments play at the same time though, right now I'm limited to one midi out. Hardware calls out for more hardware huh. 🙂

      We always need more hardware! My interface (a Focusrite Scarlett) is also limited to a single midi out, but it sends 16 channels so I have a midi splitter (mine is a CME Thru5, which is pretty affordable) to split it out to up to 5 outputs. Each track in my DAW sends to one channel, and the single output carries all 16 which get duplicated to each of the Thru5's outputs. Then I set each synth to only listen to the one channel I want it to play back. Maybe your setup can use something similar, so that you don't need to buy a dedicated midi interface or a new audio interface!
