Spring Discoveries: A Wildlife Photography Adventure
Join me on a spring photography adventure as I search for migrating birds. Along the way, I discover an adorable raccoon in the treetops, a curious coyote in the fields, and the eastern screech owl still in its winter tree cavity.
My visit was brief, but I still managed to swing by the boardwalk and met some awesome photographers there! It didn't make the video, but I just wanted to shout out the friendly community there!

    Hi, It would really help if you could reply. Im confused between this and the 100-400 GM. How's the focusing speed, have you felt it's slow somehow or is it really good? Also heard about dust sucking inside the lens since it's external zoom. How's your experience? How's the animal/bird eye tracking?

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey! I don't have any personal experience with the Sony 100-400 GM, but from what I've seen, it has a slightly wider aperture than the Sigma lens, which is great for wildlife photography. Sony GM lenses are known for their incredible sharpness, however they are very pricey. Which is where the sigma comes in. In my experience, the autofocus of the sigma 100-400 is fairly quick with my Sony a7iv. I managed to capture a hummingbird using bird eye autofocus. The lens is sharp, especially with close subjects. Dust buildup inside the lens is a possibility; mine has some, which is annoying, but it hasn't affected my images so far. I made a video on this lens last summer if you wanted to check it out. Thanks for commenting, hope my reply was helpful! th-cam.com/video/QMGVrsla1H0/w-d-xo.html

      I’m sure it would be great, the main thing I’ve seen online is the autofocus system in that particular camera isn’t very strong, so that could make capturing some things a little more difficult. At the end of the day, whatever camera you have or are thinking of getting, would be good, it’s more so the lens that will make a big difference when you’re first starting out.

    HI, MY 5 CENTS. THIS LENS IS A FULL FRAME LENS. USSUALLY FULL FRAME LENS WORKS BETTER WITH FULL FRAME CAMERA. IF YOU USE IT WITH CROP SENSOR CAMERA YOU NEED TO STOP DOWN ONE STOP TO GET MOST OUT OF THE LENS. THAT IS OBVIOUS. BUT THIS LENS IS DIFFERENT. THIS LENS IS VERY,VERY SHARP PAIRED WITH CROP SENSOR CAMERA OR FULL CAMERA IN CROP MODE. NO NEED FOR STOPPING DOWN. ON TOP OF IT, THIS LENS PAIRED WITH FULL FRAME CAMERA REQUIRES STOPPING DOWN NO MUCH BUT STILL TO GET MOST OUT OF THIS LENS. CHECK IT OUT. KIND REGARDS PETER CHROMIK

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The crop factor of the a6700 would put the 200-600mm lens at an equivalent of 900mm, giving you more reach without the potential quality loss or loss of light associated with a teleconverter. I think that could be a really good setup.

    Hello, i like your photos a lot but i dont unterstand how you manage to take these shots with such a high ISO but without image noise. Can you explain how you do that?

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey, thank you for your kind words about my photos! The quick answer is DXO denoise. When using a teleconverter, there's a loss of light, which often requires a higher ISO. The a7iv does a great job at handling noise as long as the photo is well exposed. At the time I created this video, I relied on DXO to denoise the images. Since then, I've refined my techniques to avoid shooting at such high ISOs whenever possible. While I still use denoising software occasionally, I find that the built-in denoising features in Lightroom are now more than powerful enough to handle any noise issues. I hope that was somewhat helpful!

      Hey Adrian, I greatly appreciate the support as always! The tricky thing about those bigger birds in the sky is, they’re usually either a crow, or a vulture, which can both be really cool! Haven't you considered a matte box like Freewell's Eiger or just a 95mm VND for when you film? That matte box without the flap can be work as a semi-hood with the ability to put in/out the VND/CPL when needed and go neutral for photos. I have the PolarPro Basecamp and it's a pain to even consider getting the CPL out so you're always at a disadvantage of about -1 stop if you consider keeping the matte box on. Love your videos, narration, and the spot-on music in conjunction.

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have definitely been leaning on the idea of using some sort of VND. Freewell even reached out, asking if I would like to try out their hybrid VND/CPL. However it didn't come in a 95mm filter thread. That being said, I didn't consider a matte box, I will be looking into that! Thanks for commenting, glad you enjoyed the video!

    Thanks for the video with these magnificent photos. Probably the problem with the duck was caused by air flickering. Especially if the lake had a different temperature than the air. As the photo is magnified so is the flickering. Also, if the subject is too distant for a photo without converter (more then 40m) with a lot of air between you and the subject, the converter will not help to take a clear picture as the problem of air flickering increases.

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for watching and for your kind words! You’re definitely onto something with the air flickering-that’s a great way to explain it. I use 1.4x with 100400gm on a a7rv and the experience is similar to yours. It's hit and miss, especially the subject is far away. If the subject is near, say within 5 meters then the focus is always spot on.

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's interesting that you have had similar experiences with the 100-400 GM lens. It's definitely something to keep in mind for photographers interested in trying to see further, when thats not exactly the case with how these setups work. Thank you for sharing!

  • @CameraRay
    @CameraRay 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

    One big issue found with the 1.4x was ghosting and haze when shooting through grass and small limbs. You photos also shows this issue. When photos are taken through grass is can make your subject hazy and look not in focus when you know it was dead on when you took it. Shoot through the same grass blades without the tele and there is no ghosting. Shooting through brush will cause loss of contrast with any lens, but the tele on the 200-600mm magnifies this more than any other combo i have used. I mostly just use the combo for video and just crop for photos. 👻👻

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It definitely becomes more difficult to capture a clear image through foliage. I can see how this setup could be useful for video work, and how cropping might be a better option for photos. Thank you for sharing your experience!

  • @KurtisPape
    @KurtisPape 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I have this combo, if I start at sunrise I only add the TC about 45 minutes after sunrise when the light is stronger. The key is to use it in good light. If you left the TC on all the time, I feel like it would only benefit you 1/4 of the time, where 3/4 it would almost negatively effect your images due to higher ISO. So it's a skill knowing when to use it 1/4 of the time. This is only advice for high resolution cameras though, teleconverters are more useful on lower resolution cameras like 30mp, also heaps useful for video. All I know is I don't use the TC much, but it's necessary I have the option available.

    I often use my 1.4x with my 200-600 on my A7R V with great results. The only thing I can say is that it takes practice and more patience with the 1.4x. Keep in mind that every little movement is multiplied and can quickly make your photos blurry. As a result, I always increase my shutter speed around 2x what I normally shoot without a teleconverter. And yes, watch out for those heat distortions. Even on a nice day, you may be surprised to see some heat distortions when looking through the viewfinder/screen with a teleconverter. It takes some practice. But you will figure out what works and what doesn't. Just like any gear you have.

    how you get very low noise at high iso? Only DXO post processing or you over expose your photo in the field?

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I find that slightly overexposing the photo can reduce noise in the shadows, but it comes with the risk of blowing out the highlights. For this particular video, I relied on DXO to denoise my images. Thanks for commenting!

    I have found that combo to be extremely inconsistent. When the subject is closer the results are better. You can't use it to to make a far away subject closer and have a sharp outcome. You can use it to fill the frame with a close subject and will have better results. On the 300 2.8 the 2.0 TC and 1.4 TC are fantastic!

      I completely agree! My best results come from using the 1.4x TC with subjects that are already close. I originally bought it to photograph migrating warblers in the spring. Thanks for sharing!

    I'm tempted from time to time to buy it, and then I see videos of people talking about it, and I don't want to buy it 😆 Have this lens paired with a7IV and it does a great job, but I think I'll wait for a1mII and it'll be easier to crop with almost double megapixels. Thanks for the video brother!

      I would wait for the a1mII, that’s going to be wicked! And I’m sure the crop would be much better. Thanks for commenting!

    Your experience with this lens and teleconverter may vary depending on the camera you use. I have been exclusively shooting with the Sony a7iv, and its autofocus features really help this setup excel. If you have any experiences with the 1.4x teleconverter and the 200 - 600, share them below. Good or bad, I would love to hear them and it might help someone else who's deciding on this combination.

    I bought the 1.4x TC for my 200-600 and A7r3 and returned it after one try in the field. The autofocus suffers terribly with jitters and focus breathing and as you said, the keeper rate is much lower due to lack of sharpness.

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh definitely, and I can only imagine the pixel density of the A7R3 further showed any flaws in the teleconverter. The 1.4x has very specific use cases where it does perform well, but ultimately Sony teleconverters are designed for the GM lenses. Thanks for sharing!

    What is the best Sony focus area for wildlife. I have been wondering this for a while is it zone. wide, flexible spot small, can Somme please tell me

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depending on the model of Sony camera you have, my go to focus setting is the tracking option. I find its the most powerful and accurate because as your subject moves, the focus box tries to stay locked on across the screen. Within tracking, I use a mix of wide focus zones, as well as small, medium and large focus spots. Its okay if you don't have tracking though, because whether to choose a wide focus zone or a flexible spot "small" depends on what you're shooting. For a bird in the sky, I would go for the wide focus zone. For a small bird in the bushes, you might have more luck with a small focus point. I'm not sure there is a perfect choice, but on my old Sony a7ii I did prefer the flexible spot option. I hope that made sense, thanks for commenting on the video!

    Great to see someone else shooting the local trails. What are you using for a mic? Do you have one mic for your voice and another pointing outwards for the wildlife?

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot หลายเดือนก่อน

      My audio setup is actually pretty basic at the moment. It's recorded directly out of my GoPro and a lavalier mic. Other than that, the rest is a mix of audio recorded from my Sony A7iv with no mic and downloaded from epidemic sound. Thanks for commenting!

    Zoom with a TC is not a good combination,

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have surprisingly captured some of my favourite images with the TC attached. It does 100% make things more difficult and maybe it's ruined more photos than it's created haha. Either way, this definitely wasn't the situation to use one in, too many variables to deal with.
