  • Welcome back to the final chapter of my 3 part series, where I attempt to improve my skills and get closer to wildlife. In this final episode all of my determination to photograph the kingfisher finally pays off! The photo I captured signifies the hard work I put into ethically capturing a photo of the kingfisher... but the chase for the best shot is never over.

Great footage and shots and congratulations! Really enjoyed your series on the Belted Kingfisher. They are definitely skittish and a challenging subject to photograph. Patience definitely required and does pay off!

The kingfisher definitely taught me a lesson of patience, haha! Thank you, glad you enjoyed the series!

I am currently trying to photograph a pair of these. I thought it was just me, I didn't realize these birds were just naturally very cautious. Great shots. Thanks for this video. It's given me some extra motivation.

Great shots, I find that Kingfishers are creatures of habit where they use a select few branches as there perches. I tend to position myself close to one of these branches and wait. I have found creating perches for them over the water can be highly effective, not only does it allow for a better fishing postion for the bird but also provides you with a clear perch in which you can alter and create the perfect composition.

That’s perfect advice, I’ve seen the kingfisher perched along the river in the same spots over the past few summers. I’ll have to try again along there and see if I can come up with more interesting compositions!

Great video. Belted Kingfisher are my favorite bird to photograph and I know how difficult they are to get a close up shot of one. Also a hair tie works great to hold the camo net to your lens. Use one all the time.

Finally got my shot today! I didn't expect it either. He flew by and landed 50 yards away on a branch, and I took some shots with my rf 100 to 400. I thought to myself that there is no way those would turn out, and when I saw them, my heart sank. There was what appeared to be a white/silver object covering the face. Then a few stills later... he turned his head. He had a fish in his mouth half his size. It's not the sharpest shot, but I can't believe the luck.

Haha that sounds awesome! I always see kingfishers with smaller catches. Wildlife photography is so unpredictable, thanks for sharing!

Congrats on your video clip at 6:00. That beats my Belted Kingfisher clips. I have really nice clips of Green and American Pygmy Kingfisher. And a decent Ringed Kingfisher clip. But the Belted has been my Kryptonite. I have been planning on trying in much the same way you did, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Thank you! Those other 3 kingfishers would have been amazing encounters, good luck with the belted kingfisher!

I'm still waiting on my kingfisher shots. I've only seen them twice now, with no chance at a photo. I'm still hopeful.

Staying hopeful is the key! Eventually you’ll get to know what time of day those kingfishers are around and hopefully with persistence you’ll get the shot! Good luck!

I like the videos that you make.. Hats off to you.
It took me quite a while to my my shots of the female Belted Kingfisher.. I just love these birds.. Very quirky and I love their memorable clattering calls.. "Oh! Kingfisher is here!"
    Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I think this is one of the first bird calls I really caught onto, it's unmistakeable. You always know if they're near by haha!
