In this video I find the front wheel bearing seal had failed so I make a start to replace them with a bearing inspection. Another learning experience as this is the first time I have had to deal with this issue, also details of a service thrown in for good measure.

the early 70's SPORTSTERS have the most beautiful lines, etc of all HARLEYS in my opinion and I have had many, many models etc over the years. From Panheads, lowriders, springer softtail....many.
Beautiful time machine!!!! Im 65 and my first 2 HARLEYS 1983 SP0RTSTER AND A 1977 SPORTSTER!!!! YOURS IS RARE TO FIND IN THIS PRISTENE CONDITION LOW MILES!!!!! THE 1974 WAS A GOOD YEAR WITH THE NICE GRAPHICS ON THE TANK AND THE PAINT IS VERY BEAUTIFUL!!!! ENJOY HER!!!!
It was a beautiful Commando until that single Mikuni carb was installed. It's lost the acceleration and the torque it was designed and engineered to produce. Shame. Norton Commandos are still one of the most sought after vintage bikes of their era. Why reduce their performance?
@robertshepherd3832 hi Robert, it was an easy solution at the time for me to keep the bike on the road. I do have a new set of Amals waiting to go back on the bike at some point.
Many Commando owners are ill informed about the single Mikuni and the inherent performance losses compared to a Commando with dual carbs. There is not one Mikuni supplier that publishes torque and hp numbers that shows the single Mikuni performance on a Norton Commando. Why would they? It would be bad for sales.
Hi, what screen extension are you using?
@scottstretton2127 sorry I can't remember, I sold the bike 2 years ago.
Hi again Sir Ride a Bit, it's Mitch from Armenia, and a fellow Aussie from South Australia. You really live up to your channel name, because it seems you haven't ridden any of your beautiful bikes for about 4 years! I truly hope everything's ok with you and your family and nothing untoward has happened.🙏 I also have a TH-cam channel, and it can be a little burdensome to keep producing videos. However, if you do it out of love, it truly does bring joy to others who wish they were in your position. In your case, it's classic motorcycles. in particular, you appeal to my love of 70's Superbikes. The fact that you've acquired 3 of my all-time favorite bikes is amazing in itself, but the way you look after them is very inspiring. Whether you ride around the Whyalla backstreets, or out on the vast open roads of the Oz outback, everything you do appeals to me, and I'm sure to others as well. So, if you're in a position to post some more videos of these gorgeous bikes, I for one will watch with interest. If you're not worried about subscribers or view counts, your love for these bikes will shine through and appeal to many older riders like me. I'm now 67 and wish I could have just one of your 3 classic bikes. Alas, it's probably not meant to be, especially over here in Armenia. So, please make some more videos if your able to. Keep safe and God bless you and your family. Best regards, Mitch
2024 now, your ctek still working ?
Yes, it is, I purchased another one a few years ago to help out
@@sirrideabit651 nice, why many people who owns ctek 5 have problems like not charging?
@playstation2bigs no idea, but you will only hear from those that aren't happy, and not the majority who have had no issues
Beautiful bike but it won't perform like a Commando with that single Mikuni. Put the dual carbs back on and give this Norton the acceleration, the torque and the grunt it was engineered to have.
Awesome bike!😎
beautiful
Love that 1974 tech alarm system. Wicked accessory, never knew about it. Thanks for keeping stock, a thing of beauty right from the factory 👍
absolutely beautiful bike
My 82 iron sportster uses that same bearing you have a very awesome bike you are very blessed that's the sportster every one dreams of owning don't ever get rid of it or you will regret it awesome video
Thank you, bike is running well and it's definitely not going anywhere.
Very nice mate ,is that original paint ,if not who painted it ? I’m looking at purchasing one in Brisbane but it needs some work. also where is the best places to get parts from. Kind regards Shane
The bike was re painted before I purchased it, I believe it was done by a guy in the Barossa region Tony Codrington, he does total restorations but be prepared to wait so l've been told, I source parts from different places depending on who has them available, classic bike spares, Bj'S bikes and bits, Trojan classic motorcycles. Might be some others I can't recall plus there's ebay, hope this helps.
Hi mate. Nice bike. Have you still got it? I'm in Alice springs restoring one of these for a mate. A couple of the spacers from the back wheel are missing and i'm looking for an exploded diagram for the lester wheels so i can identify what im missing. Do you have any info? Cheers mate.
Hi Richard, yes I still have the bike, it has the period correct 2 into 1 exhaust on it now. Hope this link helps you out with your restoration, have fun. www.tioc.org/partsbookstriumph/pb-tri-1980-T140%2099-7139.pdf
Great review. Was considering getting this charger for my motorbike and this convinced me to go for it. Well done!
You really surprised me with the easy removal of the pannier rack! I have a rack for my givi outback panniers on a Triumph Tiger 800 XCX but they seem to be permanently fixed. Is there a trick similar to what you showed how I can remove these when not in use? Instead of tearing down the entire setup. That would be so great. Thanks for your advice
Givi must make a permanent (like the triumph made ones), and a rapid release rack, the one I had was a PLR 6409 rapid release rack (in the video description), I would look online to see if Givi have a rapid release rack compatible with your bags. Definitely worth having as you have seen in the video giving your bike a cleaner look with very little effort when not in use. Hope this helps.
@@sirrideabit651 Thanks, will check on that! If they have, quite a pitty, just bought this new set 2 weeks ago for 200 euro. But hey, that's nothing compared to what we spend on this hobby right. Appreciate the swift response :)
Black is beautiful...Chrome won't get you home.
Many of us old bikers who have parts, bikes etc may give parts to some people and won't to others no matter what they offer.
180 my arse.
I miss my T140D 😭😭
I noticed you never filmed towards the front when stopping. But I did see a rear view of the indicators bobbing up and down when you stopped. The isolastic, when gapped accurately, did stop a LOT of vibration but the inherent design meant vibration. Looked like a nice ride.
I owned a new Mk3, regrettably, and most of those problems you had are age related I suspect. Not production faults. Though they had some faults, electric starter not powerful enough to crank the motor for one. I had a 750 and twice the gearbox layshaft broke (easy to replace). It was a common fault, I hope Norton remedied it with the 850. I notice yours is not standard, wrong silencers and carb. But no matter what it does look good.
I've been really enjoying the Brit bikes this past year, been back with a 78 Bonnie, just recently bought, really enjoying it, very nice and light, easy handling relative to the Harley's I've ridden almost exclusively the last couple decades. I really enjoy the light weight, quick smooth handling the Triumph has always been delivering. That is a beautiful place to to ride
That's what I like about having both harley's (recently purchased a Fat bob) and British bikes, completely different riding experiences, thanks for watching.
Very nice.
wow what a beautiful survivor, man i hope you keep her safe , i own a 1996 and have done so many mods only because there are millions of sporties , but 70s in all original condition i would never touch , i came accross one once the guy wouldn't let go , even though his riding days are done , and i respect that , its his baby , i still keep my eyes open for one , my friend has a 74 1000 and i love it ....nice bike man im happy for you and its in the right place 👍👍
Thank you its safe and running well, there still out there just takes time for the right one to come along, good luck.
You haven’t posted any videos in a long while… I’ve enjoyed the sportster videos… thanks buddy…
Thanks Tommy the sportster is going great, didn't realise it's been that long, I haven't totally given up on making videos I've just been focused on other things.

Hey your on the wrong side of the road 😅
Comfortable/ Grate Fuel Mi, for that era, / That’s a time capsule for riding/. Probably Maintained. It’s Truly A Reliable EVERY DAY Riding Machine & Camry 500 lbs EASY, that’s organal bike???
Man that’s a horrible bike….. you should sell it… to me.. & I’ll figure what to do with it.. nice man.. sporty the most underrated bike ever…
The previous owner wasn't looking for a "buyer"...he wanted a "caretaker". Beautiful sporty.
Nicely put, hopefully sometime in the future there will be another caretaker.
Mate, we wanted to hear it start! 👍👍👍
There's more videos of the bike running and riding on the channel
Your a very lucky man 👍👍. Had the same choke problem with mine, put it down to the 2 friction points on the lever becoming rounded. It was always a problem bike and I was too young and lacking patience (traded for a BMW R100), regretted that decision for a while now.1 other thing I noticed not original is the round tank plug in the top of the tank I'm certain I remember that as being silver not black 🤔
Thank you it is a very nice bike, I ended up replacing both plungers and seals which has solved the problem, it now has the period correct exhaust on. For various reasons I haven't made any videos for quite sometime but I should do to give loyal subs an update on the bikes.
I have a 1973 Roadster. It has spent much of its life in humid Panama and has not suffered some of these problems. I wonder if the steel of the gas tank was thicker on the earlier models. Perhaps the “starter assist” failed with the first owner and he resorted to using the kick starter permanently. Then when the pinch bolt got loose he didn’t tighten it in time to save the splines. Of course the older drum rear brake was not hydraulic on pre 1975 bikes. I have often wished that my front disc brake was a double shoe drum brake.
All valid points but who knows why one tank is different to others, can only guess the kick starter bolt loosened with vibration but now I check regularly, I now have a 69 Bonneville with the front twin leading brake and works well but putting that 13mm front master cylinder on with braided lines made a huge difference to the front disc brake.
You can't improve on perfection. Good for you keeping it stock! Beautiful!
Cheers mate
Mate how tall are you and your weight? Looking at one of these lower triumphs. Cheers
I'm 5'4 70kg, I made another video, my first, which has more information about the bike.
I love your bike. I have a 77 sitting in my garage that needs transmission work. Ive got to get that done after your ride along camera has reminded me of how fun it was. I'm 70, myself, so I'd better quit procrastinating and get it done. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you and all the best I hope you get your bike back on the road soon.
Great video, have a blessed week my friend.
Thank you and thanks for watching
Old post but sweet bike. Use super glue in the cracks to make the gauges water resistant.
Cheers thanks for the tip, I usually gauge the weather before taking it out
I just bought this exact bike, same blue color at an estate sale in California all original, excellent condition, 14k miles $1800, WHAT A SCORE!
Wow right place at the right time, enjoy your new ride
@@sirrideabit651 Looking at yours I can't wait to get it all cleaned up, it's been in a garage parked for 26 years. I'm like you I'll keep it totally orginal. I have a lot of work as it's been sitting so long.
Nice to hear another old bike kept in original condition, have fun and patience bringing it back to life
Can it be plugged into the battery for a month without being monitored? I have to go away for 3 weeks and I'll remove the battery and I'll connect it to this Ctek battery tender I have purchased to keep the battery healthy however I won't be around so I won't be able to check how it's doing. Is it safe or I should just leave it in the scooter?
It would be perfectly safe, if the charger detects that the battery is resisting any charge it will stop and the red light will come on. It's also perfectly safe to leave the battery in place.
@@sirrideabit651 thank you.
Real nice I'm restoring my 78 T140 E now.
Thank you George, good to hear another 70's Triumph being saved.
I like the style of your sportster ,I started on one.i wish I keep it .I think they sounds strong with muffler on .nice looking bike I would be happy riding it what I like most is its bone stock
Thanks mate
Hi there great vid ive got the same bike,I’ve just purchased a 7 plate clutch, did you use same clutch springs or use a lighter spring?thanks
Thank you Glen, you will love this clutch set up, I ended up using the lighter springs which will help with an easier lever pull, thanks for watching
What did you use T120 springs?thanks
@@glenruaine5972 yes that's what they are
Hi there buddy how do you adjust the clutch? Have 7 plate with t120 springs my issue is clutch lever is nearly all the way out before it engages cheers
Hi I have a 79 one, did you or are you going to put in unleaded exhaust valve seats in it? I aquired a owners manual and it says in bold print under no circumstance use unlead fuel regards Tim
Hi Tim this bike is all original so I add a valve saver additive into the fuel mix, I always have fuel at home and fill up after a ride. Plus I add Stable which helps keep the moisture out the tank as a rust preventative, For longer rides you can take a small bottle with you.
Nice bike
Thank you Charles
I had a new 75 should have kept it
I think we all have had bikes we wished we'd kept

I have the same sporty. I’m ready to pass mine on to my oldest son but it’s created a quandary. My younger son loves the bike too. Any chance you’d be willing to let this one go to a new home? It would create quite a family legacy!
Sounds like you have a bit of a situation there Steven, but unfortunately for you I have no plans to let this one go anytime soon, thanks for watching
In my opinion AMF Sportsters have been the most beautiful ever. This one is stunning.
Thank you, I have to agree even today's sportsters are using the old AMF paint schemes.
