Haley van der Merwe
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 ต.ค. 2024
Hi! 👋🏼 My name is Haley van der Merwe. I moved from Oklahoma City in 2021 to begin my journey in South Africa. I married a handsome Afrikaner, adopted two schnauzers, and have been exploring Southern Africa for the past three years. Journey with me as we chat about travel, faith, and the stunning nation of South Africa.
How conflicting emotions can coexist, especially while living overseas during the holidays
My sister came to visit this month! It was a refreshing time of familiarity. We traveled, laughed, braaied, played games, and cherished each moment. Time with family always causes me to be a bit more introspective, asking myself hard questions that require no answer. I am so grateful for my life and my family in South Africa. I couldn't ask for a better life. Yet I sometimes find myself longing for what's back home. Can I call it home? I'm not sure; maybe I have two homes now. What I do know is that contradicting emotions can absolutely coexist. If you find yourself in a similar situation, or if for any other reason you find the holidays a difficult season, my heart is with yours. We will not only get through this season, but I believe, if we choose to, we can find the joy in it, too. Much love.

If you’re a South African living overseas, our slaghuis trip may make you homesick. Welcome to a typical week in my life, excluding things like ministry outreaches, church services, small groups, and worship and prayer nights. I don’t think about pulling out my phone in those moments. I love the life I get to live. I prayed for this life. 🤍 Do we have anything in common? Any other housewives ou...

Oklahoma girl living in South Africa: An introduction

In 2021, I moved from Oklahoma City to South Africa with two suitcases and absolutely no idea of what my future would hold. I found joy in colorful townships, language learning, 5 hour church services, falling in love, and eventually changing the plans I had for myself. Every day is a gorgeous opportunity to create joy - South Africa taught me that. Instagram: @heyvandermerwe Email: heyvanderme...
I saw you on TV a week ago with other foreigners learning afrikaans. Since then I start following your videos and background and love your conversations. You are hard on yourself to speak afrikaans. The few words I hear are even with a perfect afrikaans accent. When I started watching the tv program, I thought you were afrikaans! I am 100% sure in a year or 5 your will 100% master it. I want to send this message in afrikaans, but is not sure how good your reading is. We were in the Netherlands this year and met a couple which is also missionaries from America. As fellow christians we became friends and are still in contact with then on where they are spreading the Word of God. May God bless the work you and your husband do, and your stay in your new country. Best regards
Welcome to South Africa we love you
So stinking proud to know you 🤍

Need to do more videos on TH-cam. South African ppl run away from winter, you want to run to it, I think because of family. GBY.
Please ignore anyone that say you are not welcome in SA. Of course you are welcome!!!!! I am living in Europe and yes, like you said, I miss SA a lot, its diversity and its beauty. It is so cool to see a fellow follower of Jesus enjoying SA and also learning some of its languages. Keep posting about SA and your experiences here. By the way, your Afrikaans is awesome!!!
How lovely to come across your lovely channel, Haley! Me and my sister come from Brazil - via London - and we also ended up in South Africa and have built a family here on the Cape - in die Kaap! We even have our own youtube channel as well, can you believe it? Keep up your Afrikaans, it sounds amazing! We also live in a very Afrikaans area but it’s soooo easy to carry on speaking English and I do regret not having learned properly after 20 years but hey, not too late! I want to make a video for our channel baking rusks or beskuit, will you beat us to it, just saying! Jy is baie, baie pragtig! Liefde! Mírian & Lírian ❤❤
Awwwwhhh!!! I feel like were hanging out!!❤️
Love your videos! You are amazing!
@@antoinettewessels2903 you are amazing!!
So I'm obviously not an ou tannie, but also long past my 20s and so reflection brings with it some insight and wisdom. As Alex Hormozi once said on a podcast "Patience is doing other things in the meantime", meaning don't focus on the things you cannot do right now but on the things you can. Realize that the luxury of time you have right now will be gone once you have moved into other phases of your life, like having children and the like. You will only have this amount of time again once they are out of the house, and that's a long time to not have extra time to yourself. So take the time to be fully present in your life right now, and trade your time for things you will never have the time to do again, like learning an instrument, take classes online, or just pressing into a deeper walk with the Lord. Alternatively use the time to fully prepare you for the next phases of your life you wish to pursue. A life well lived is one without "what ifs", and one full of lessons you learned as you dared to live it to its fullness.
@@cornesmith I love this! Thank you so much for your wisdom. 🤍
Just ask a person who speaks another language, to teach you one word. They will appreciate your interest in their language.
@@cornesmith Beautifully said💕💕
I love ur videos!
The direction I have you are suppose stir the granola occasionally so it won’t get to brown
That part at the beginning is so true. It's why, even though Xhosa wasn't really taught at my school, my mom made sure we knew the basics. My sibs and I are able to greet the guys at Engen, we can make small talk with cashiers in shops near to us etc. It's so valuable to see their reactions when young (and white!) kids are able to speak their language with them. Love that you voiced this!🙌❤
Sal graag meer van Suid-Afrika en Afrika wil sien wanneer jy reis! Dankie :)
Baie, baie welkom in Suid-Afrika en Afrikaans, Haley❤ My best friend I have ever had, Deicy Mangones Truter, that also loves the Lord and prays/intercesses with me, is originally from Columbia, South America. Her husband and she also used tk be worship leaders. She could only speak Spanish and a little bit of English when she married her Afrikaans husband 10+ years ago and has been living in SA for about 6 years+ now. She is very good with understanding Afrikaans now and speaks more and more Afrikaans without even realizing it.❤ I have a very soft spot for you guys coming to SA from overseas. Jy praat baie goed Afrikaans! Happy to have discovered you. ❤❤ Will love to follow your journey! Blessings ❤❤
I do have a question for you if you don't mind. We're there any Americans against your move to South Africa it will be interesting to do a video on that if there were Americans against your move to South Africa it will be interesting to know. It's just an idea and yes for a Rooinek I can speak fluent Afrikaans but can not spell proply I can't even spell the king's English properly. But I hope you do more videos please. You one of my favorite TH-cam's I have many. Keep up the good work thanks
The last couple of years I've been focusing on the geopolitical trouble brewing and focused more on America than I have my entire life. The one realization, whether right or wrong, I had was that Americans really have a sense of community and TH-cam influencers is like the people speaking up for communities. I followed you because I was hoping we could emulate such an environment here at home.
Great video - SA is absolutely beautiful and we had so much to be proud of (had) but now, it's a shithole. We also want to believe it can be better but what would you recommend we do about people finding ways to get past the electric fencing in our gated community to break into homes with pangas and guns while innocent people are sleeping? Also, how do we stop the criminals from lurking in parking lots and then grabbing peoples handbags? Oh and the farm murders? It's out of control. It's gone too far. The good people are leaving.
You will make it girl, you will make it😎🤍 Jy sal dit beslis maak. Ek het goeie hoop vir jou😂
I absolutely love you Haley. Been following you for a few months on Instagram. I think from my perspective what you don't know you bring is a lens into the Afrikaans and South African culture to look at ourselves and our culture in a total new way. You reflect things to us that we have never thought about in that way, because it's like the fish trying to see the water. And there's lots of humor in that discovery that you communicate in a unique and relatable way. Keep it up and you're most welcome to our country.
@@cornesmith this is a fantastic comment, thank you so much for the encouraging words!
Your message is so beautiful! Keep up the Lord’s work. Much love from a South African. ❤
People don’t hate. Change government. Simple.
This is so fresh, because you come from such an unencumbered place. If we could learn to be this open about our cultural baggage, we could all learn to live cooperatively. It’s an enchanting and encouraging prospect you could be pivotal in leading. Glad I subscribed to your second video. 🌈
Its about time you did a youtube channel keep up the good work and don't worry about the haters I have met Americans who prefer to live in South Africa than America. Your Afrikaans will improve and for an American you speak good Afrikaans. Keep up the good work.

Eish! The division in SA I'm hopeless if it'll end😖
It's human nature and it's everywhere in the world, but we can each just try our best to understand and respect others and spread kindness, whatever form it may take. ❤

You are such a blessing!! Yes, I agree…we follow where our Lord leads and do what He says! You are a breath of fresh air in South Africa and for it’s people! I love watching you because it reminds me of how special South Africa and all the people are..! It is amazing to see how you adapt and enjoy the different cultures in South Africa! I am an Afrikaans South African and we have been living on your turf for 27 years!! The USA is where the Lord lead us too and it was not an easy road! We have no family here and we miss them! I love where we live in beautiful Naples, Florida and I love the American people and the different accents like the Southerner’s etc. Keep those video’s coming!❤
