Ultimak Mini 14 Scout Rail + Vortex Crossfire 2 Scout Scope
In a bit of a dual experiment, I wanted to see how the Ultimak Mini 14 rail would hold up under use and how the scout scope concept worked without having to buy yet another rifle that uses the scout scope concept mounting system.
There is a not a huge selection of scout scopes available and thus I went with Vortex because of its price, availability, and decent glass clarity. I wasn't interested in spending hundreds of dollars on a concept I may not even like. The Crossfire is simply "good enough" for my testing purposes.
The Ultimak rail I was expecting to be quite good given Ultimak's reputation and also one of my friends had recommended it to me, using it on his own rifle. I initially had my doubts about how it mounted to the gun but seeing no loss of zero or wandering zeros, I think it holds up just fine. That being said, the lack of the hand shield from the factory handguard was very noticeable and I had to be careful not to have my fingers on the op rod. Additionally, this rail heats up like crazy and can become unbearably hot in field conditions. Thankfully however it also acts as a heat sink in a way for the barrel, just be careful with rapid fire especially in hot environments like deserts.
During my testing I had a particularly stubborn roadrunner on the range as well. Thankfully no one shot him.

This build was a little less involved and easier to put together than the A1 for sure. Using a RRA A2 complete upper and I believe an H&R standard government A2 profile barrel with some original Colt handguards, this was much easier to find parts for. The lower I borrowed from my A4 build as the lowers are essentially the same. I did opt for an A1 style grip still, because A2 grips are almost u...

Your aftermarket trigger looks a bit recessed compared to all the 1911's I have delt with. Alway thought the, "in tolerance" L.O.P. called for the trigger to extend 1/3 into the trigger guard. Yours looks more like 1/4. Was the original trigger the skeletonized or solid version? RIA calls the finish Parkerizing, which is a type of phosphate coating. I'm surprised the diamond pattern checkering on the grips isn't too much for your delicate hands, since the trigger and slide release were uncomfortable.

I bought two Molot VEPR AKs 7.62 ($999,99) in July 2014, one off on their serial numbers! Just before obame put the ban on all Russian AKs-"Americans are allowed to own, buy and sell the guns, so long as they were already in the U.S. prior to the sanctions." A month went by and the shop where I bought them said they would buy them back as a pair for $3000, I almost took them up on them since I was looking at a .50 Cal. But didn't. I am glad now, one has never been fired, the other less than 500 rds. It is the best, most accurate, most reliable AK/AR I have, plus I would take it over any of my ARs shooting under 300 yards! Remember if you zero at 25 meters, that zero works at 300 meters also! Wonder what I could get now? Have a friend that would match that offer any day of the week. But I might be out of luck if the SHTF, cause any AK or AR will bring in big bucks then! The quality won’t matter.

I have one. Also took advantage of the free brace stamp and now it's an sbr. Of course I put the rifle version telescoping stock on it. Also I bought an Amazon claw mount and it seems to work just fine. Threw a vortex dot on it and it seems good so far. I dont have too many rounds on it though since I've only recently had the nearly $500 to dump on a sacrificial parts gun. I'm watching all these videos now to find someone who has dived into the lower. I hate ambi safety and I want to pull it out and grind the right side down. Scared to dig into it blindly because springs and detents can go flying out. But hey, at least I have a parts gun now too.

Hey man! Couple of questions… Issues using the same BCG originally for a full length 20” AR through a 16” barrel, mid length gas AR, both DI? I ordered a whole new rifle, an 18” barrel, full gas system for $200.00 more than a full upper w/BCG. My order somehow magically turned into a 16”, 1:9 with a mid length gas system. (Same manufacturer) So I took it! It was there lol. Last question, on a budget…a tight budget…any ideas regarding optics? Looking for “acog like” with a co-witness red dot atop. Or ideas in a different direction. Your thoughts? Any good manufacturers that may not get the recognition they deserve that offer decent quality & prices? BCM rail mounted front & rear apertures $64.00 Vs generic sites, $32.00. Both work great, at 1/2 the price. Many thanks! Keep up the great work! Subbed…and that 20” AR is a fixed carry, A2 “old school” Bushmaster, by Windham before the buy out.

@@BluesStraightFromTheHarp in general, you should be able to swap most BCGs with most uppers with no issue, I say in general because headspacing will be different between each one of course but usually its not a problem. I swap BCGs in some of my uppers until I buy a dedicated BCG for that upper and Ive never had an issue for your optic selection, it sounds like you want a prism style sight and the two I can think of off the top of my head are primary arms and vortex, they usually come in 1x, 3x, or 5x and I know the gen 2 vortex prisms have capability built in for a piggyback red dot but having looked through and used a few prisms I would go with the primary arms ones but I dont think they can take a red dot on top - both are affordable and both will work but thats my preference hope that helps!

Yes it is harder to get the Italian made Inox in the US. On top of that it is even harder if you live in a state that has magazine capacity restrictions on new guns to 10 rounds. So if you live in a state like that and have to register your firearms and you want a brand new 10 Round 92FS Inox made in Italy that is NOT the CA compliant variant, you might have to do some digging at your individual local gun stores which do not always list the exact model number on the website. Or you can check ones that can ship to an FFL in your state. But agreeing with your opinion, it is worth it. Especially since Beretta is talking more seriously and officially about cutting production of the Inox very very soon. The pre 2000s ones will always be more valuable if in good condition, but I think with the news of the discontinuation, any 92FS Inox especially made in Italy will be a collectors item in a couple decades I believe adamently.

In addition, the QC at SW has been very, very poor for several years now. If you buy a current production revolver, it's "hit or miss" as to getting one that functions properly for any length of time. Also, they've went to round butts on their revolvers for cost cutting reasons. Magnum revolvers should be square butt. It's very, very sad that a firearms manufacturer with such a long history has slipped to this level. Looks like you may have gotten a good one.

I have the newer version in FDE. They make a shroud for the barrel if you want an attachment for the “threaded barrel look”. I haven’t did anything crazy with mine. Have a light/laser on the forward pic rail. Sling. Optics (of course). Stock pad/spacer. Charging handle on each side. Only minor cons would be the spongy trigger which I’m sure is due to all the plastic. The other thing is the mag release. It’s not very accessible if you drop mags with your thumb. I have to drop it with my off hand. Overall it’s a great gun and fun to shoot.

The FDE ones do look very good. I wish they had an OD green too

Original precision and TK customs offer an internal lock delete plug for S&W revolvers if you’d like. If you do that, you won’t have to worry about it failing even if you never used it and it will smoothen out the trigger more and you can order it to match the frame finish.
