Coverting my classic car A/C from R12 to R134 freon. Almost destroyed my compressor in the process!
I always warn against turning the freon can upside down which charges the system with liquid instead of gas. In this video, you will get to see why. During editing I saw how long I was holding it upside down and marveled at my own stupidity. There were several factors that caused this including a faulty plug and the lack of the fan coming on, but the main reason was me getting in a rush and adding liquid freon. The good thing for you is it gives you a first-hand look at why you should take your time and add freon as a gas. Sure, turning the can upside down and adding Freon as a liquid, speeds things up but as you will see it can go badly very fast. I added UV dye so I could see where any leaks were, but my ears ended up being my divining rod in this project. A quick visit to my parts car and a change of the High-pressure line and I was back in business. You will see me install adapters on the R12 fitting so that I could convert to R134. R12 was the bomb for cooling but some bureaucrat decided it was hurting the ozone. To me that is like saying that peeing in a public pool is poisoning the water. Sure, its gross but in the grand scheme of things, the impact is minimal. Nonetheless, it is what it is and R12 is now unobtanium. In spite of my mistakes, mishaps, and substandard product, I still managed to get a 27-degree difference in discharge air. Not bad for an antiquated system and basically wrong freon for that system.

How to change the A/C compressor in a Chevy truck & recharge the system. Adding freon fast & easy.

Shortly after changing a hose and recharging my truck, The A/C once again stopped working. I suspected the compressor was leaking but this confirmed it. I opted to spend a little more to get a new compressor instead of a rebuilt. The difference was less than ...

      I did replace the orifice tube but honestly it looked identical. I did not flush the oil. I could be wrong, but I have always thought the oil matched the compressor, not the freon. I very much appreciate any input that professionals may offer. I show mistakes on my videos, so others don't make them. My father used to say, "if it works for a short time, it is a redneck rig. Don't use leak sealer in your ac, find the leak by using refrigerant dye 134a isn't a drop-in replacement for r12 because the compressor oil circulating through the system is mineral oil. You can add a couple ounces of PAE compressor oil to make it work or thoroughly flush the mineral oil out and replace it with PAG compressor oil. Also the dryer will need to be replaced.

    I have to say, doing ANY AC work without safety glasses or a face shield is taking a chance of losing an eye or two. No gloves and you might have some burns on the hands, I've had that several times myself. The bad thing about not having a set of gauges with a high side reading is that if you have a blockage of a non working fan that causes the head pressure to spike, you usually don't know it until you have a blown hose or locked up compressor. You were right on about the INOP fan causing high head pressure. I've put liquid in systems 100's of times and it does speed things up. I have to admit I have locked up an R4 doing just that. Good luck with the AC stuff man!

    1973 was a transition years for the B-body. Many early 1973's use the older style engine mounts. I haven't looked closely at 1973 C-body cars. I've noticed the engine mounts on 73 B-bodies, but I never looked to see if the early ones were rubber mounted K-frames or not. Most of the 73's I've seen with the older engine mounts were Dodge Chargers, I'm not sure about two door Satellites, or the four door and station wagon cars. I have run across several 73 Chargers with either type of engine mounts.

      Interesting. Maybe they were late 72 which would label it a 73. 73 went to a full floating K-frame/engine cradle but I have heard of people swapping in a 72/earlier K-frame to take advantage of the parts availability afforded by the earlier design. If you have a 73 with the earlier K-frame I would say you have a rare bird. Thanks for the info.

      @essigspeed หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do appreciate your opinion, but I originally installed this intake in the 1990s and it worked just fine. It's not a race car, just a toy. The 2 fours are more for looks than performance, yet she is still the fastest thing I own. I do agree the stealth is a great intake, but I have swapped intakes on a race car in the past with very little difference in performance. Believe it or not, a stock GM intake out flowed quite a few aftermarket pieces. If you watch my C4 video where I replace the FI with a stock GM intake, I gained quite a bit of seat of the pants power with that swap. The raised runners and increased flow of the Stealth probably won't benefit this engine much since it is a mild build with only a little over 400 ponies. I have a video coming up on a SB swap in my Gremlin, let me know your opinion on the intake I chose on that one. I chose it over a stock style due to its taller runners, but it was a hard choice since I am a believer in factory technology, and taller runners will raise the RPM range. However, it is a light car, so I opted for the taller intake. Thanks for the comment.

      Funny thing is, I need surgery because I was lifting transmissions and the back of trucks/cars, oh, and don't forget engine blocks, LOL! No lie, showing off can get you hurt. It is nice finally getting the Vette back together. She is my first love.

    Triumph just came out with the nss10 a 10k version of the lift. Ordered it through national auto tools... It took 6 months to get here, and communication was non-existent, but it's finally here. I'm putting mine together this week, which led me to your video. Thank you

      Oh and I'm glad you leave the mistakes in your videos because everyone and I mean everyone makes them we are all human and plus the mistakes is funny to watch someone else make them and a added bonus you don't act other TH-cam people like that one guy I started watching and quit because you can tell he is trying his hardest to act and talk like vice grip garage so no matter what keep being yourself and keep making videos and like I said I will always like and then watch your videos and plus comment plus I tell everyone they should come to your channel and subscribe

      Thanks John, I really appreciate the encouragement. Don't be too hard on the guy, Ole Dereck isn't too bad of a role model. No lie, sometimes I swear Dereck watches my channel because I will say or do something and shortly after he will say or do something similar. I'm always afraid people will think I stole it from him. I sold his buddy Chad the rearend in the giveaway Duster, so I know he knows who I am.

    Waste of 8 min didn’t tell us to put air on full open the doors and set the ambient temp on the dial and do this in the shade and shake the can up side down then look do it that way can’t go wrong unless you have other problems

    • @essigspeed
      @essigspeed หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, do put the air on full. Open the doors? Ambient temperature, in the shade? That is way too complicated for a novice, just fill the dang thing. Turning the can upside down can speed things up but you also run the risk of damaging the compressor. It's a risky trick only a professional should use. I will be happy to refund the money you paid for my video. 🤪

    GOOD JOB! Gotta say this as a Designer/Engineer as to why that box is next to the master cylinder. It's a egronomics thing. You CAN tighten by hand from the top of the unit the brake lines going from the master cylinder but it's MUCH EASIER if you lift the unbolted unit UP and tighten/loosen (by hand only - STILL use a wretch from the top only-common sense) from the UNDERNEATH or bottom. THAT way you kill two birds with one stone. You lift the sending lines full of brake fluid upward meaning it would be hard for air to go into the lines while loosening/tightening with your left hand the lines/fittings themselves which is MUCH easier AND less likely to crossthread the fittings. Here's the catch though no matter what - you WILL have air in the brake lines. ALL 4. I would ALWAYS do a full brake bleed on each line ESPECIALLY after doing a master cylinder (vacuum/meachanical/gravity). Air ANYWHERE in the system could be a life/death matter. One recommendation - when bleeding the master cylinder, tap the bottom of the cylinder to untrap any air bubbles that are STUCK b/c of pressure. That ALWAYS happens in a master cylinder exchange - STUCK BUBBLES even after you pump the piston again and again and it looks like you're done. You're NOT. And they DO get into the system which is why you need to do a FULL brake bleed every time you switch out a system part. LOVE the front end of your truck. NICE design!!! Cant wait to see you do the brake cylinders - doing a FULL restoration on mine. Tks Dude!!

    I have a truck 833od it has the bce tail housing and then they use a bracket in the a body position but with a higher mounting for the shifter in the cab for height .

    • @essigspeed
      @essigspeed 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Weird. I have seen the taller brackets but only in B-body positions. I am guessing you either have a rare truck or someone may have changed it in the past. I did a transmission swap on a Fury that someone put a B-body trans into, and your knuckles hit the dash every time you shifted. An A-body trans would have saved your knuckles, but it should have had a C/E-body which would have set it about 5 inches further back. The A-body is only about 2 inches further back, but the overall trans is shorter.

      Truth be told, this repair is pushing the limits of safe. I doubt there is a welding shop that would touch it due to liability reasons, so it is strictly a DIY project. So far, my repair has held but his frame has cracked in two more places since then. Most importantly is to remember that for rusty metal, 60-11 welding rod is the Go-To.

    I love this video with one exception. Can you please tell me the name of the materials you are using. What filler, are you priming the paint? What primer? And what grit sand papers are you using? I have a very similar crack in the hood of my 89. I want topaint white stripes. So color matching is really not an issue. Thank you

    • @essigspeed
      @essigspeed 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did a lot of learning (and mistakes) painting this car. There is a whole series on it all the way up to the actual paint job, including stripes. I believe I mentioned products, paint, fillers and such during some of those. The only thing I would change is adding an adhesion promoter. I found that Duraglass filler worked best as well. I used Urethane primer/sealer for the final prime. Just think flexible when dealing with these cars. There is a You Tube channel called Paintucation that is a professional painter. He may be able to give you a more educated answer. Tell him I said, Hi.

    It's easier if you take the radiator out. It's just removal of two hoses and then it unclips with two clips. There's a third hose with a clamp you'd need to cut that keeps you from taking it all the way out of the engine bay but you can put the radiator to the side of the engine with that small hose still connected. Aluminum water pump pulley is a common upgrade. The plastic one is a point of failure.
